Diantha only dropped her eyes when Castiel looked away again and remained silent for some moments, feeling somehow chastised though he'd only said one word. "Are there a lot of hidden corridors behind tapestries? Wouldn't the professors know about them?" she asked, carefully keeping her voice as snark-free as possible.

"Yeah, they know," Castiel said. "Most of them were students here too. But the professors don't use them anymore. They're off... doing whatever professors do between class. Hiding under their desks grading homework or something." His brother was kind of a professor so he knew they had lives, but he didn't care what they all did, not even enough to make a guess.
He got to the bottom of the staircase and held the tapestry aside for Diantha to get through. "The Defense professor's office is that way, and the bathrooms are that way. The girls' is out of order, though." Any time someone actually tried to fix it, Myrtle just flooded it again. There was really no point.

"I've heard a lot about that professor," Diantha said, peering toward where Castiel had indicated. "He's technically one of the main reasons I was allowed to come here." Maybe she should give him a little information, since Castiel had helped her and she'd gotten annoyed at him unfairly.

"Really?" Castiel asked. He glanced in the direction of the office, then looked back at Diantha. "Why him? Or like, would you have to kill me if you told me?" He was trying to be funny, but it was well-known that, however much of a pushover the Defense Blackwood-Hardt seemed like sometimes, he used to be a Death Eater. Or he still was.

The question brought a small smile to Diantha's lips, and she relaxed a little more. She did worry that maybe telling him too much would just put her back into a situation like she had been in for years, but surely it would come out eventually. Anyone could just search for her family name in books, anyway. "I kind of come from a kind of noble family in Sweden," Diantha said, the words softening as she went and she lowered her gaze.
"In order to talk my father into letting me get awa-I mean, come to Hogwarts, I told him I would use the opportunity to make connections with wealthy British families." She only peeked up at him once she was finished. So yes, she was a Slytherin. Ambitious enough to lie to get away, cunning enough to come up with the story, headstrong enough to take the initiative to get out.

Castiel stared for a moment while his brain processed all that information. Kind of noble family in Sweden. There were a couple very awesome things about that statement. Swedish girls were hot, and though he'd already noticed her looks, now he knew where her accent was from and that she was a Swedish girl. And noble was nearly royalty, wasn't it? Should he bow? Should he kiss her hand? Should he...
His mind stopped him there. Lani. He'd tried so hard with Lani. She was beautiful, intelligent, and he'd known there was more to her than gently bred Society girl almost immediately. But she'd looked down on him because he wasn't Society. It had taken a great deal of time, some convincing, and her brother breaking her heart to get her to let go of that shell.
What did he have with Lani now? Friendship, maybe. He'd hoped for more. He'd looked into Society courtship and did things like bring her a favorite flower and try to be nothing but genteel, and she still wasn't interested beyond that friendship. Probably because she was kind of noble and he was kind of just some Goth guy.
Maybe interest flickered in his eyes with his thoughts, but it was quickly dampened. He worked to compose himself. "Have you met the Headmaster?" he asked. He turned to resume walking. "He's American, but he's important even outside Hogwarts."

"Briefly, just to be sorted and such," Diantha said, unsure what to do with Castiel's response. "It's just some story I made up for my father, anyway. It was the only way to get away, and I don't plan on doing more than I have to to keep him off my back." She tried to hide the bitterness she always felt when she thought of her father, and likely failed to do the job completely. The other Delagardie children managed to be decent members of the higher circles of society, but she had stopped caring before having time to start.

Castiel nodded and flicked a glance aside at Diantha before returning his gaze to the corridor ahead. So she was nobility, and she wasn't actually interested? Why not? He thought of Lani again, the only Society person he felt like he knew. When she'd refused to let go, he'd asked the same question. Why?
He'd learned things since he met Lani. He'd gotten to go to a ball with his brother's hot girlfriend! He'd loved the elegance, loved the luxury, the beauty of it all, but he'd realized that, as much as he tried, he wasn't good enough. He saw the games, he'd been told about the games, but they were all just far enough out of his reach that he couldn't quite play.
What did Society girls get out of it all? They got to be perfect, they got to be watched constantly, and they got to be married off to guys they hoped they'd love some day. Duh on wanting out.
"My parents were Society," Castiel said. Yes, that was the status he'd tried to impress her with earlier. "During the war they moved to the U.S. though. My father died when I was little and... I've been to a couple Society things." He glanced aside again. He wasn't even sure what he was saying. Did it make any sense?

Diantha brought her hands in front of her to play with a large ring on one finger. "So have I," she said, sounding thoroughly uninterested in the balls and finery. "I've got this huge family," understatement of the day, "and I haven't cared about it all in years." Ugh, she sounded older than 15 when she said that, and she crinkled her nose in distaste, then gave an absent shrug.
"With all the family they kind of gave up by the time it got to me, though." She felt herself starting to drift into memories and mentally shook herself. "Why are you at Hogwarts if your family's in the US?"

Castiel gave a slight grimace. "Um, my best friend's family moved out here... well, my cousin, and I convinced my mom to let me come for like, moral support." And now he needed moral support. There was no way he'd go back to his old school, though. That would be admitting failure, and he'd have to live with seeing Cheyenne every day.
"We're step-cousins so we're not really related or anything. He kind of found someone though." He pressed his lips tightly for a moment, then pulled a breath and straightened, trying to shake it off. When he spoke again, he at least sounded confident. Probably.
"There are celebrities everywhere. This is like the Hollywood of schools. I've even been in Cauldron." Which he was pretty sure was mostly popular in the U.S. and Great Britain, but it was international, right? Even if she'd never read it, maybe she'd heard of it.

Diantha looked curiously over at Castiel. Best friend turned cousin turned not really related or anything. She hadn't really heard of anything called Cauldron, at least not that anyone would actually be in, and she knew Hogwarts was a crossroad of sorts for the famous, so her thoughts drifted back. After a moment of silence, she spoke again. "You were interested in your not-really-related friend?" Why else mention that the friend had found someone?

"Well, not really, but he's completely ditched me and since they're both in Gryffindor I never see him anymore." He wasn't interested in Mari like that. It would just be nice if it could just be them against the world again and they could make out and be best friends. He was terrible at lying to himself and he knew it. He wasn't going to explain all that to someone he'd just met, though.
"It's complicated," he tried.

"I think life just enjoys being complicated," Diantha said. She scuffed her shoe lightly against a slightly raised edge of stone in the corridor. Getting away from all of that was one of the real reasons she was here. "I've known people who find someone, and they just get so wrapped up they can't think of anything else. They usually get over it, though."

Castiel kept his gaze on the floor as they walked. "Do they?" he asked. He didn't think Marius would get over Seiji. Seiji was Mari's dream come true, and ever since the night they crashed that ball Castiel had thought that maybe he liked Mari differently than Mari liked him.
"I don't want them to break up or anything. They're like, perfect for each other." And that meant he didn't really love Marius, didn't it? Or was it an if you love something set it free kind of thing?

"Well...I meant more like, they get over the obsessive part," Diantha said carefully. At least most of the relationships she'd seen got over it. Eventually. "Besides, people in relationships are kind of stupid a lot of the time. What you're supposed to do is find someone, too. If you're really best friends it'll all be okay in the end."
