"I don't think we're technically supposed to do magic outside of class, anyway," Gavin said. His gaze lingered curiously on the guy. What had happened to cause the delay? For now, he opted not to give in to his curious streak and managed not to ask. "Could I have your name?" he asked instead. Though it was too early to call anyone a friend just yet, it was nice to have made some more or less friendly acquaintances already.

"Um, Andy," Andy said, cursing himself for having gone shy. He was just talking to some random prep school guy who liked random conversations with random people, that was all. It didn't mean anything. "Did you say your name was Gavin? I really suck with names so like, if I ask you a few times, I'm sorry." He felt stupid and lame. Of course, he'd spent a lot of his last years at school hiding in the boys' room, so it wasn't like he was social or anything.

"It's okay, yes, I'm Gavin. A trick is to say the name again as soon as possible. One of my old teachers told us that once," Gavin said. It wasn't as hard for him to remember names anymore, but it was still a useful trick to share. "It's nice to meet you, Andy." He smiled and held out his hand for a shake. It was practically an automatic reaction at this point in his life.

Andy's eyes widened a bit in the moment before he forced his own hand up. He'd been right about the guy's name, they guy hadn't been offended, and he'd gotten an actual tip on how to remember. Plus a demonstration. "Um, nice to meet you, Gavin," he said. The guy's—Gavin's—hand was so warm and firm, and Andy felt flustered. It would probably be a lot easier to act normal if he'd managed to get more than a couple minutes at a time in the bathroom, but it seemed like Hufflepuffs didn't understand a need for alone time. He silently thanked Matthew for about the thousandth time since he'd gotten here for telling him to keep his wand in his book bag.

There was something about Andy's reactions. Gavin was so used to being around prep school guys that interacting with someone who was less than completely confident was a bit of an oddity. Though it was a little...what was a good word? Intriguing? Endearing? He smiled again and ended the handshake, dropping both his hand and his thoughts. "Perhaps we could get together some, we could people watch."

Andy's breath caught a moment, and he filled what could have been an awkward silence with a bit of nodding. "Yeah, that'd be nice," he said. "What House are you in? I mean, just curious. I'm in Hufflepuff, and I haven't met a lot of people yet." Just a friendly, classy guy that Andy wanted to pretend might not be totally straight, and an overpoweringly hot one who'd definitely almost kissed him.

"I'm in Ravenclaw." Gavin slid his hands into his pockets. Andy was the first person from another house he'd spoken to. "I've only spoken with a couple of others outside of class, the guys in my dorm room. What year are you?" He'd been told that students from other houses interacted, but he wasn't so sure about students from different years.

"Fourth," Andy said. "And you're in fifth, right? Gavin?" he added. He totally shouldn't have slightly curved lips or glittering eyes just from managing to remember someone's name, but knowing that didn't stop the little flicker of pride. He dragged his gaze down to the toes of his new shoes, then looked out into the entrance hall.

Gavin smiled broadly at the little success and he just caught the glitter in Andy's eyes before the other guy looked away. "Yes, exactly right," he said. Maybe endearing was the correct word, after all. "I wonder where the best places to people watch are. I heard that Hogsmeade is one of the only places that's completely magical, I bet there are some really interesting people there."

"I bet there are," Andy agreed. "We could go like... look or something. I mean, if you're not busy?" Gavin didn't seem busy, since he'd stopped to talk. Oh, Andy hoped it didn't look like he was flirting. He felt likt he might be maybe a little, but since he didn't know how, maybe he wasn't, in which case he was safe. He should just get used to the idea that maybe in the magical world he could be kind of normal and maybe have a friend.

"I was wanting to go out and see the grounds, actually," Gavin said, eyes brightening. He barely thought of flirting in general, and wasn't likely to recognize it immediately, even if Andy was trying to. "Going to Hogsmeade would give me a brilliant look, wouldn't it?" It would be more fun getting a look with someone rather than alone.

"Yeah, and maybe one of us will see something the other doesn't, so like... two heads are better than one?" That was so lame, but it was too late not to say it. "Um, so most of the people I've met here aren't even British," he said, hoping to change the subject away from the moment of complete stupid he'd just had. "Like, the first professor I met was American and the only student I've really talked to besides you was American. I mean, there's nothing wrong with that, I was born in Las Vegas, but like, I didn't expect it." Maybe if they were walking he'd be able to funnel his nervous energy. He wasn't social, and he didn't know how to make friends!

Gavin gestured toward the large door to the lawns and started walking. "The two guys I share a dorm with are both from overseas. One's from America and the other Luxembourg," he said, accepting the change in subject. "I kind of like having all of the different perspectives. How did you end up in the UK?" From what he knew of American geography, Las Vegas was quite a distance from England.

"My mom married an English guy," Andy said. "So we moved to England a long time ago. I've got a little brother..." He hadn't thought about Tam all day, and he was horrified to realize it. When was the last time he'd thought about him? He searched his mind a moment before realizing he'd cut himself off in the middle of a sentence. "Um, his dad died, though. We've been... around. It's a long story. Isn't it nice outside?" It was overcast, but it was a change of subject.

"I'm sorry about your brother's dad," Gavin said, not jumping immediately on the change of subject this time. "Where are your bother and mum now?" He couldn't help but be curious about what some of that long story was. Though he wouldn't press if Andy said he didn't want to talk about it, it couldn't hurt much to ask.
