Indigo was glad his mouth was full, because it gave him time to remember the use of words. His eyes had widened, and he gave a brief nod before swallowing. "That'd be awesome," he said. "Like, really. I heard it's owned by a vampire. I think Jory's been there." Indigo had gone into the Bloody Mary once, but not much had happened. He couldn't even imagine hanging out with Dare Blackwood-Hardt, but he told himself he was an adult now, not a student, and it didn't have to be weird. Even if it was.

"I think it'd be fun," Rhys said, trying to keep himself from asking what he really wanted to after what Indigo had said. Then he did it anyway. "Vampires aren't really real, are they? I mean, the test I had to take said they were but come on, they can't actually be real." Matthew said they were, but Rhys was certain he could only trust about half of what Matthew said about magic sometimes.

Indigo gave Rhys a disbelieving look. "Yeah, they're real," he said. "And dragons and unicorns and ghosts and mermaids. They're not exactly what Muggles think they are, but they're totally real. Vampires kind of keep to themselves, though. Them and werewolves. They're considered part-human and a lot of people are afraid of them."

"You're muggleborn, right? How long did it take you to get used to all of this? Or was it just easier because you were, what, eleven?" Rhys could easily imagine an eleven year old getting used to and accepting everything much quicker, didn't kids that age dream about stuff like this? He knew he'd had his own fantasies and dreams, whether or not they were strictly allowed.

"When I was a kid, before I got my wand and everything, I couldn't control my magic. Stuff happened all the time that my parents couldn't explain and I couldn't either. I fell over the half-wall in our loft when I was like eight and I bounced. I thought it was great, I wanted to do it again and my parents were freaking out. When stuff like that happens, believing in vampires is easy."

Rhys shook his head in disbelief. "Matthew's mum said that she knew he was magic when toys started flying during his temper tantrums," he said. Oh, he loved Matthew's parents. "When I was three, my biggest accomplishment was being cute at church." He certainly hadn't been making things fly around or bouncing off of the ground.

Indigo grinned, but shook his head. "It's not an accomplishment, it's an accident," he said. "You wet yourself, your mom gives you a bath and clean clothes. You magic away your mom's hair, she wears something on her head for a month or two." He could see the difference, especially since he remembered his parents' reaction to the latter, but it really wasn't an accomplishment.

"My parents would have gone postal if I'd turned out to be magical," Rhys said, his eyes widening briefly as he shook his head. Considering how they'd reacted to him being gay, there might have been an exorcism or something attempted. "How did yours react? You said they were freaking out about the bouncing not-baby boy."

"My parents are awesome," Indigo said, then glanced into the shop to make sure no one had heard him. He lowered his voice a little to go on. "They took me to a couple doctors when I was little, but no one could find anything wrong with me, so I guess they just like, went with it. I dunno, sometimes they're really weird and sometimes it's like nothing can shake them."

"Well, that's good, though. I hear all kinds of stories of families not reacting well when the kid ends up being something they hadn't expected. You're lucky," Rhys said. He marveled at the fact that some parents could accept their children were part of an entirely different world when other parents couldn't handle the possibility of their children wanting to date someone unexpected.

"Yeah," Indigo agreed. He'd been seriously worried and everything had turned out well. He felt lucky. "What about your family?" he asked. He got the feeling that things hadn't gone well. Everything Rhys had said was about other people, not himself.

"Well, I've only spoken to my parents once since I moved out on my eighteenth birthday, if that tells you anything," Rhys said. "A friend of theirs saw me on a date with a guy when I was thirteen, saw me holding his hand. You know, big evil sin, that. So they told my parents, my dad's a preacher. It wasn't pretty and it never got pretty." Hence the moving out the second he was able.

Indigo's brows drew together. "Sorry to hear that," he said. He felt even luckier now, though he also felt bad for Rhys. His own parents weren't religious and he'd still been scared. He couldn't even imagine how bad it must have been.

Rhys waved his hand a little and shook his head. "Thank you, Matthew's helped a lot moving past it," he said, then fell silent for a few moments before he pulled himself out of his thoughts. "So, how long has it been since you've seen Jory?" he asked, dropping his eyes to the curious mirror Indigo had brought out earlier.
