Castiel was just finishing off a piece of toast when the morning post came flying into the Great Hall. He always worried that he'd end up covered in droppings, but somehow it hadn't happened yet and so he just waited for it to pass. It didn't pass entirely, though. An owl landed in the space between him and Mari with a scroll tied to its ankle and gave a low hoot for attention.
"I bet it's from Seiji," Castiel said. It didn't have a box attached, but who else would be sending Mari letters? Certainly not his jerkface brother.

Mari grinned and nudged Castiel before he reached out to take the scroll. He certainly didn't expect the flower that fell from the scroll as the owl took off and he began unfurling the letter. A flower. Well, maybe it didn't actually mean anything, but that maybe didn't stop him from blushing a little. He kept his eyes firmly away from Castiel as he read the letter.

"Ooooh," Castiel breathed. The flower was enough, but seeing Mari blush was even better. He bit his lip to keep from pumping his friend for information before he'd gotten to read his letter. Then he figured it was fair game. "Mari-and-Seiiiji, sittin' in a tree..." he teased. "Or on a fountain. What's it say? Is it undying love and stuff?"

"No!" Mari said, unable to stop himself from glancing up at Castiel. "It doesn't say anything like that, so there." He stuck out his tongue playfully at his friend and showing the letter for proof. "He says looking at flowers is a tradition." He still couldn't help but be very happy the guy had sent him one. No one had ever given him a flower before.

Castiel gave Mari a knowing look and took the letter. He read it slowly, trying to find anything that might hint that it was secretly a love letter. "I think the whole tradition thing is just a cover," he decided. Japan has a lot of traditions, right? But he sent you a purple star-shaped flower from his own garden. He's totally into you. You need to send him something romantic back or he'll think you just want to be friends!"

"Oh my God," Mari said, his eyes widening. What was he supposed to send to a super rich, gorgeous Japanese guy? Jewelry? No, that didn't feel right. "What's an American tradition that could be romantic?" he asked, turning to Castiel. "We don't look at flowers and stuff. He's a wizard, so he doesn't do movies. I could make something." He wasn't really all that awesome at making stuff, though. He picked up the flower and looked intently at it as he thought.

"I don't know, fast food?" Castiel said. He wasn't serious in the least, but it was definitely an American thing. "It doesn't have to be expensive, just awesome. I mean, he sent you a free flower and I'm jealous." Not that he was into a guy he'd never even gotten a good look at, but getting flowers was totally worth his envy. Especially with Cheyenne not even answering his last letter.
Castiel gave it some thought, but nothing he came up with was romantic at all. Sending a Christmas stocking or a box of fireworks was lame. Then he blinked and looked at Mari. "You could just use his tradition," he suggested. "If he likes flowers so much, send him a flower back."

Mari's eyes widened again and he wrapped his arms around Castiel in a tight hug. "That's perfect! We could go down to the lake and walk around it, I bet I could find something pretty to send back." There were flowers all around the lake, it was just a matter of finding a good one to send. "I'll have to find the spell to keep it fresh, too." He could actually have something of his own to do the next time he and Castiel were in the library.

Castiel laughed at Marius's excitement and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "I bet he'll love it," he said. "And it's a good idea looking around the lake. I was going to say the greenhouses, but giving him something you really found is even better."
The post had tapered off, but a larger owl dropped a package off for Castiel that he had no interest in opening. He could tell it was from Cheyenne just from the writing, and it made him feel better to ignore her. He pushed it aside.
"Maybe purple is his favorite color," he said. "Maybe you should send him your favorite color." Now he was just talking. He'd be much happier sharing Mari's happiness.

Mari nodded, thinking. He liked red, and blue, would sending two flowers look bad, like he was trying to one-up Seiji or something? His eyebrows came together and he glanced over at the package. "What's that?" he asked, turning the flower by spinning its stem between his fingers. Castiel didn't look too excited at getting a package.

"Probably the stuff I told Cheyenne to send me," Castiel said. He wanted to keep ignoring it, but Mari had asked, so he gave a heavy sigh and pushed his plate out of the way. He tore off the letter that was stuck to the top of the package, then ripped the paper and worked open the box. His brows drew together. "She sent me a box of dirt," he said, and reached for the letter.
I buried it, like you buried our love.
"Oh my god!" He started digging, pulling out pictures and trinkets that were covered in dark soil and setting them aside. He forgot for the moment that they were in the Great Hall.

"What's wrong with her?!" Mari asked, staring in disbelief at the package. "Maybe she's crazy and it's a good thing you broke up with her." He peered over at the stuff before setting his flower aside and reaching for a trinket and his wand to clean it. The confused looks they got from other people in the hall were promptly ignored.

The corset was at the bottom, its once-vivid royal blue stained and ruined. "I paid so much for this!" he said, eyes tearing up. Not that he had any use for it in whatever condition, but she'd destroyed it! And his hands were dirty, and his sleeves were dirty, and the picture he'd just pulled out was of her standing in front of a sign holding a little doll. "It's graveyard dirt!" Or she wanted to make him think it was, but he wouldn't put it past her.

Mari looked over at Castiel and, seeing how upset he was, put the things he was holding down and put an arm around his friend. "I think that proves the crazy," he said. "And we can totally clean that, you're super smart, you can get the stains out like that." He snapped his fingers. "Do you have anything she gave you you can mess up and send back? You could soak it in lake water."

"I already sent back her ribbon," Casiel lamented. "And she'd probably be happy if I sent back her pictures." He wrapped his arms around Mari and leaned into him. He wouldn't even be able to enjoy them out of spite anymore.
