Riley wasn't but ten steps away from the Owlery entrance when she got a whiff of the owls and their habitat. It had certainly been a while since she had made the trip up here to send a letter off to her parents, and she did not miss this smell. Nevertheless she had a nice, handwritten note to forward on to her parents. Riley ducked as an owl flew over her head, returning from a trip presumably. She scanned the room for her favorite of the school's owls, but it didn't take long to find it. The barn owl's bright orange highlights in its wings stood out among the many brown feathers. She walked over to him and scratched his head, careful not to be bit- he was often irritable this early in the afternoon. Once he seemed pleasant enough Riley handed him her letter and his claw tightened around it and soon enough he had begun his flight. Riley stood, watching the owl fly until he disappeared into the clouds.

Castiel had two letters to deliver, both on the finest parchment he could get his hands on. One was tied with black ribbon, the other with white, and he hoped that it wouldn't get dirty on the way. He intended to find an especially pretty owl for that one, to make a good impression.
He wasn't writing his mother this time. In fact, he hoped she wouldn't write him either. He hoped that Dad received the owl that was probably coming from the school, and he hoped that Dad shrugged it off and didn't do anything. The chances of that happening were approximately zero, since Dad was a Muggle and owls automatically went to Mother, not to mention that Dad wouldn't let him get away with it in the first place, but he could hope.
He took a deep breath before stepping into the owlery, which had a tendency to smell like owls, and released the entire thing when he saw a gorgeous brunette already there. Was fate out to get him? How much temptation did he need?! He silently cursed his luck, while simultaneously and unobtrusively looking her over. Then he dragged his gaze away from her and back to the owls.
"Would you help me with something?" he asked. Oh, he was bad. It was innocent though, he swore to himself, whether he believed it or not. "I want to find a really pretty owl for a letter I'm sending."

The question directed to Riley broke her gaze out of the window while startling her ever so slightly. She turned to face the speaker for a moment before answering the question. She had never seen him before, and she caught herself wondering how it was that she had been seeing so many unfamiliar faces lately. "A few of those owls over there are decent looking," Riley said gesturing to a few owls across the room. Aside from her favorite barn owl, she didn't pay too close of attention to the other birds.

Well, that was helpful, Castiel sighed to himself. "Thank you," he said. He'd been hoping to start a conversation, but he wasn't a people person to begin with, so it was just fine with him if she was uninterested. He'd put forth enough of a token effort to count.
There were no snowy owls, but he found a lighter-colored ural owl with a rather heart-shaped face. That would have to do for Lani's letter. Now to convince it to start a journey while the sun was rising...

Riley was just going to leave but lingered longer, partially to see which owl this guy ended up choosing and partially because she was in no rush to be anywhere. He ended up choosing an owl that Riley hadn't remembered seeing before. While she liked the brown and orange on her owl, the lighter colored one was cute. "That's a pretty one," she ended up saying before she could stop herself. She was usually not one for small talk - especially with strangers- but with nothing else to do, why not?

"It is," Castiel agreed. He coaxed the owl with a few owl treats until it extended a leg, then began tying his scroll on carefully. "This letter is going to a very special person," he said, partly to the girl, and partly to the owl. "Don't nip at her." That was only for the owl. True, he and Lani were just going to be glorified pen pals, but he wanted to make a good impression.
