Castiel was waiting outside the Room of Requirement. At least, this was where he'd been told it was, across from a painting of a wizard failing to teach trolls ballet. It was something to look at.
He'd never actually been in the room, but it sounded like the best place to do what needed done. If it really could be anything you wanted, then there would be no end of things to practice the charm on, it was private, and it was private. Castiel was more than a little nervous about the Phrixus guy, and going someplace where they wouldn't be found would be good. Unless she'd told her brother. She probably had. Well, then he'd just lock the door. You could do that, right?

Ly had lingered with her brother as long as possible before he'd had to go off to serve another detention. They were separated enough as it was, she disliked being forced to separate from him yet again. "Let's get this over with," she said when she got to the right corridor. She paced in front of the wall three times and a door appeared. Without another word, she reached for the handle, hoping the Room offered enough things to cut up to entertain her for a little while, at least.

Castiel's brows arched at how easily Lystravirtue (what a name!) got the door to open. He glanced down the corridor to be sure no one was watching, then slipped in after her, pulling the door closed behind him. Lock! he whispered. Please! He didn't want anyone else getting in, least of all an angry, jealous Slytherin.
When he turned around, he got his first look at the Room of Requirement. It wasn't much, really. There were some poufs to sit on, there was a small table with two chairs, but what was most noticeable was the mountain of pillows against one wall. They definitely had enough to practice on.
"Do you know the charm?" he asked, heading for the table.

"Of course I know the charm, this is second year magic," Ly said, pulling out her long, wispy wand. She'd had to dig through old books to find the incantation. "Tell me you read the book." Her eyes darted over to him and her pale brows arched high in question. The sooner it was over, the better, and doing a bit of work beforehand just meant she would be out quicker. She pulled out an old book and set it on the table.

"Of course I read the book," Castiel replied. He opened his book bag to remove The Standard Book of Spells Grade 5 and set it on the table, followed by Achievements in Charming and Quintessence: A Quest, which wasn't required until sixth year for N.E.W.T.s.
"I've used this spell a hundred times in dueling. I don't know the history, but I've marked the place here..." he said, sliding open Achievements to a ribbon bookmark, "here, and here," he finished. There was a bit of description on how to perform the spell in The Standard Book of Spells, but she said she knew it, so he pushed that one aside. Quintessence had an entire page on the severing spell alone, but it was Achievements that had its history.

Ly raised her eyebrows again at the books , then stepped over to the pile of pillows. She nudged it with her foot to break up the pile and picked one out. "Diffindo," she said, and a slash appeared in the fabric. It reminded her pleasantly of her first night in the school, when she and her brother had lost a few points in a destructive run. "Ever tried nonverbals?" Many of her teachers expected sixth and seventh years to be able to perform nonverbals, it would impress Trace if they both demonstrated without actually speaking the incantation.

"I have," Castiel said. He drew his wand and abandoned the books to go find a pillow of his own. Maybe he intended to show off a bit; nonverbals weren't taught until sixth year, but he'd been putting in the effort to improve his dueling.
He grabbed a likely victim from the edge of the pile and tossed it in his hands to get a feel for it. His throwing might not be impressive, but as long as it was still in mid-air when he drew his wand... Diffindo!
The pillow cut cleanly in half, and its contents fell to the floor. Castiel held down his smirk, but his eyes glittered. Does that work?

Ly smirked at the show. "Bloody showoff," she said. She approved, though. Another pillow was sliced in half by her own wand work. If there was anything she was good at, it was destructive spells. Just for the fun of it she shot another spell at one of the split halves, sending feathers flying around the room.

Castiel got excellent grades, but he wasn't a slave to schoolwork. He didn't mind if it took a bit longer because they took their time. He sent off a spell here or there, popping this feather, splitting that one down the center, or stripping the fluff from another.
"So, what do you prefer to be called?" he asked almost absently. He hoped it appeared casual, but he was very interested. "I like your name, by the way." And of course he hadn't mentioned his own yet, though Professor Trace had called him Mr. Catalyst.

Ly eyed him thoughtfully, taking her time to answer. "You can call me Deria." It wasn't nearly as fun giving out nicknames when people already knew her name, but that didn't stop her from doing it. As far as she remembered, she hadn't given out that one. She didn't comment on the guy liking her name, she didn't really give a damn if he liked it.

Deria? Castiel flicked a glance over at her. He didn't know if he'd be able to remember that one. He'd been thinking of her as Lystravirtue or the girl Phrixus twin for nearly a year now, since she'd first been in the magazine.
"All right, Deria," he said, the word coming out as a term of endearment. It was too close to Dear or Dearie not to think of it like that. "You can call me Castiel." Castiel was his name, but he didn't feel like making something up to hand her, and only Mari called him Kurai-Kun.

"Watch yourself, Castiel," Ly said, her voice smooth. "Don't want my brother to hear you talk like that." He had been unhappy with the assignment anyway, hearing the guy caress her name would likely set him off. "He's dangerous, you know." Her face was expressionless as she looked at Castiel.

"I'm terrified," Castiel said, unblinking. He'd be far more cautious if they weren't in a hidden room with the door locked, but as it stood, they were. "Don't worry, Deria, I have a girlfriend back home. You're safe." His lips quirked. He doubted she worried about much of anything, though her response was interesting. She hadn't threatened him directly, only brought up her brother as a warning.

"Cute," Ly said, then dismissively turned her attention to another pillow. "Thinking I'm the one who needs to worry about being safe?" She scoffed. There was nothing he could do to her. She was far from worried about him, even if she actually had relatively little experience being alone with males other than her brother.

Castiel let that go. Arguing over who was more badass was a surefire way to prove one's insecurities. As far as Deria needed to know, he had none whatsoever. He was just a little bookish Ravenclaw who didn't know better.
"I'll be over here starting our project while you murder pillows," he said. He'd rather do all the work and get an O, but if she felt a little challenge and joined him, all the better.
Eventually it became obvious that she felt no challenge at all. There was plenty of time while he researched the history of the spell, took notes, and put together a one-person presentation. He wrote his name at the top, then quietly packed everything into his book bag before standing.
"You might want to find your brother and join his group," he suggested. "It was nice meeting you, Lystravirtue." If she wasn't part of this project, he felt no need to humor her with ridiculous nicknames.
