"You haven't talked to Dare about any of this?" Kane asked.

"We haven't spoken much. He comes home when I'm not there. When we went out I wanted to get together without breaking into a fight," Michael said. "Dare wasn't really talkative, either. We managed not to fight, though, we had...a pleasant time."

"Again, you sound unsure," Kane said. Michael tended to do that when he was holding back. "What did you really think?"

"Everything's going wrong," Michael said. "We didn't have an amazing time but compared to how we've been most of the year it was great. I tried to do little things, hold his hand or...or flirt, I guess, and he just...didn't respond, pulled away." He shook his head and looked down at the worn parchment again.

"As far as he knows, you're not supposed to be touching," Kane pointed out, "and if things have been so bad for so long, there are a lot of reasons why he might not have responded to flirting. I wouldn't count that as a defeat."

"I know, I know, it's just hard," Michael said, refusing to look up. He missed Dare. He hadn't felt so lonely in years and their bed was so large. "And I want to wave my wand and make everything better." He managed a small, halfhearted smile.

"You've been through a lot, Michael. You can do this," Kane said.

Michael nodded, but said nothing. He was feeling rather hopeless at the moment when it came to his relationship. He wanted to be brave and assertive and he was doing as well as he could. "I'm just glad classes will be over soon." The vast majority of the students would be gone and he could focus, he would have time to think and sort things out. He hoped.

"Don't put things off until then," Kane warned. "You might have more time, but without school, there may be fewer reasons for Dare to visit Hogwarts. It would be easy for those daily visits to become weekend visitations."

"Don't tell me that," Michael said, though he knew it could be true. "Believe me, I know." He was terrified of losing Dare completely. "I plan on talking to him before this weekend, and maybe we can figure out something to do. Go out to London or something."

"Plans are good," Kane said. "What about Emilian? You should make plans there, too."

"I know," Michael said. His first thought now was to mention it to Dare, but wasn't half of Dare's argument how he couldn't make his own decisions? "I'll send an owl back, saying we can meet. Maybe at the Three Broomsticks or something."
