Lyric hadn't read the last issue of Cauldron. He didn't even want to know how deeply into his past they'd delved, didn't want to know what they'd said about him. He knew the magazine wasn't about slander like the Prophet, but all the same, he'd decided that ignorance was bliss.
He had his shop open, but he wasn't feeling it. He was sitting behind the counter doing way too much thinking lately, and it was wearing on him. He didn't want to eat, slept too much, and wanted a fix again. And he wanted Keith.
He'd meant what he'd said about being there every day if he had his way. In the meantime, he was dealing with more than one kind of withdrawal, and creeping impatience coupled with a desire to do something, anything, to keep his mind off the things it kept returning to.

Jory hadn't seen Lyric more than in passing since before the summer. Sure it had stung to know that it was over, but at the same time it was likely the best option considering their history. Then he had joined the Cauldron and talked to his mum about what had happened between him and Emilian and suddenly he hadn't had any time to think about Lyric.
But the newest issue had been fascinating. There was so much he hadn't known about Lyric and he still wasn't sure what to make of it. By far the most interesting bit of it, even aside from Lyric's background, was the short article about Emilian. He had debated for a few days before deciding to just go ask Lyric if it was true, because who else could it be?
He hovered outside of the shop, wringing his hands together, before taking a deep breath and going in. "Hey, Lyric, it's been a while," he said, stopping a few steps into the shop.

Lyric's gaze snapped upward, and for a moment he forgot to breathe, too in shock at seeing Jory here. Then a wash of guilt set in. He'd painted over their wall. All except that heart Jory had made, hidden behind a large photograph of Hogwarts at sunset.
"Hey," he returned. Why was Jory here? He'd ended it, and it was better for both of them that way. He didn't have to pretend he was someone he wasn't, and Jory didn't have to deal with his sh~.

Jory half-smiled as he took a few more slow steps. "So...I read the Cauldron a few days ago. There's an article in it about Emilian." Lyric hadn't kicked him out and Jory really wasn't sure what he should do seeing Lyric again after so long. It was best to just get to the point. He had never been interested in just how Lyric had managed to get Emilian to kick him out until that article.

Lyric's gaze shuttered over at that. "Really," he asked, though there was no curiosity in the word. He didn't want to stop thinking about Keith, didn't want to let that go, didn't want to think about whether he liked Jory smiling at him like that. Maybe he didn't want to know what the article said. Maybe it hadn't said anything at all. "I didn't write it," he said. He may have submitted the photos, though. And the one of Jory just might have been from that hotel he'd stayed in when he'd walked out of MI.

"I know," Jory said. "I just wondered if... It says that a tall boy met Emilian and what... Broke his leg and his d~?" It had also spread out for everyone what had happened between Jory and Emilian, but Jory figured he couldn't argue. He hadn't been the focus of much in the way of articles, it had only been a matter of time.

"Oh, wow," Lyric said, his voice still emotionless. "He must have really pissed someone off." He must have pissed someone off repeatedly, someone who had no qualms about breaking legs in back alleys and leaving people for dead. Lyric wasn't thinking about Keith anymore. "It didn't say who, did it?" He didn't know if there was a statute of limitations on that, but he was keeping his mouth shut as long as there was any risk he could get in trouble for it.

Jory shook his head. "No. It said the witnesses didn't recognize the boy. Well, they claimed not to, anyway." He brought his hands together again and looked down at them. "I just kind of want to say thanks to the guy that did it, I figure Emilian deserved it." He hadn't even seen Emilian since, and he didn't really have any problems with that.

Lyric leaned forward on his arms as they rested against the counter. "Maybe the guy doesn't need thanked," he said softly. "Maybe he's just happy someone's safe." He looked down at smooth surface beneath his palms. There was no way he could twist it that he hadn't done it for Jory. He had, he'd do it again, and he wasn't above giving Emilian subtle reminders now and then.

"Well, I want him to know, anyway," Jory said. "And I'm curious to know how he's been lately." He wanted to know that Lyric was doing well. All he knew was that Lyric had dropped out. He wished he had managed to get better at knowing when Lyric was on something, but with the knowledge he did have it seemed like Lyric was sober right then.

"I'm clean," Lyric said, unknowingly answering Jory's thought. "Not much else." Not that he could talk about, anyway. He didn't want to know who Jory was f~ing now, didn't want to know anything. He'd cut off contact because it was better for both of them that they just stay out of each other's lives.

"That's good," Jory said, looking up and smiling. "Congratulations on that, really." It was good to hear that Lyric was staying clean, maybe that meant Lyric could be happy somehow. "Have you had any luck with the shop?" He couldn't guess on just what he was seeing right now, for all he knew it was a lull in a steady stream.

Lyric looked down from a momentary glance at Jory. "No one needs pictures," he said. The jewellery shop got more business than he did, and though that wasn't saying much, he'd had a moment or two of hope that the bastard would pick up and move to London. Or give him a reason to finish him off. He'd never killed anyone before, but there was a first time for everything.

"I'm sorry, at least you have the Cauldron, though," Jory said. How had anything ever been easy between them? "Your stuff's been really good, you know." Talk to me. Or tell me to leave. Something. He hadn't realized how much he missed having someone to talk to, maybe he had simply gotten used to it after so long.

"Thanks," Lyric said. "I hope you don't mind me using that picture." He flicked another glance up, then looked away again. He wished he knew what to say, how to talk to Jory, but he didn't. He didn't have anything that could help him relax or be talkative or playful or any of the things Jory had wanted him to be, and so he plucked lightly at a length of leather wrapped around his wrist.
