Hibernation was finally over and students were slowly stretching their outdoor legs. It wasn't perfect summer weather; far from it, but the fact that she could go out with only a light spring jacket was enough to raise her spirits. As she walked along the lake a tentacle disturbed the tranquil lake shooting up just inches from her left shoulder and startling to such an extent that she tripped backwards and fell flat on her bottom. She would have gotten up, but she landed pretty heavily on her leg and while she was positive it wasn't broken she probably just needed to keep of it for a few minutes.
She knew she must have looked funny; sitting at the edge of the lake, but she didn't care she had her new friend whose welcomes her back outside by startling her. She wasn't alone, and she definitely wasn't afraid of him... well not really.

Indigo wasn't much of an outdoors person, but this was the best weather he'd seen in months, and it had been depressing sitting in the Common Room alone when the view from the window was so amazing. He'd grabbed his checkered hoodie and his bookbag and headed out as soon as he could convince himself that it was too early in the year for an annoying amount of bugs to be out. The little bastards made him itch.
He'd thought that maybe he could get his laptop to work if he was just far enough away from the castle, but apparently the lake wasn't far enough, because the damn thing wouldn't turn on. Either that, or it was just a piece of crap. Why had he begged the 'rents for a Mac, again? He'd take customization over a status symbol any day.
He was flipping through his potions book when he heard something nearby and lifted his head. Nothing was visible from where he sat, but that meant little to nothing, considering how well-hidden he was.
"Hello?" He felt like an idiot. He was probably talking to nothing. Still, he tried again. "Is someone there?"

(nooooo I haven't lost in forever! OMG crazy formatting FTW) While hidden where she sat, it didn't mean she didn't have a good visual of people around her. While she was quite far out along the lake, she could still see students in the distance staying close to the castle in case the weather decided to have a change of mind or some other silly reason she couldn't think of. Still while she though she could see everyone she was unaware of another person close by. As she heard a voice call out it startled her, but instead of falling, her head snapped to the direction of sound.
"Hello to you too."
While her voice was very small, the silence around them allowed it to carry to where she presumed he sat.
"It's kinda rude to call for someone's attention and stay hiding."
It was clear in her tone she was only joking, but she wondered why this person was hiding. Was it someone she knew and they just wanted to confirm it was her by grabbing her attention and then revealing themselves, or was it someone playing a joke? Either way she was curious to see who the voice originated from.

Now Indigo felt lame and like a jerk. He muttered sorry, but it wasn't actually loud enough to hear as he dropped his book on the ground beside him. He stood, reaching to dust off his jeans, and scanned the area past the tall bushes he'd been hiding behind. For privacy. Because he felt like it.
"Are you okay?" he asked, genuine concern in his voice. He managed that much before he got a good look at her. Was every girl in this school insanely hot? He looked away rather than stare.
"I mean... but really, are you? I could help you up..." And he could also get shot down, because girls hated when guys tried to help them.

(Yes, quite aware, and I hadn't even gone all out yet! And did you just say I win... yaaay I WIN!) Lafra was tense as she saw the figure slowly approach from behind bushes she eyed him carefully; his tone and his features showed no signs of hostility and she immediately relaxed. Some would say it was paranoia, but Lafra was just more cautious now.
"I'm fine thank you."
Her smile was small and somewhat timid. His concern was appreciated and as a show of that appreciation she nodded her head at his offer and extended her hand upward. Why not, there was no harm in allowing someone to help her, and he seemed nice enough.
"I'm Lafra by the way."
She added for good measure, she was going to try out the 'being friendly' concept rather than do what she would usually do. Kept to herself and disappear among the mass of students. Lafra went to class and then straight to her room everyday; she was good at being invisible, but she was older now and smarter than that. Hiding helped nothing.

Lafra. Now that was a cool name. He'd thought all the Brits here had boring, old-fashioned names. "I'm uh... I'm Indigo." Not that he was unsure about his name, but he got so worked up around girls, and it became impossible to speak properly. Plus, she'd just called his bluff. He wiped his hand on his jeans as surreptitiously as possible, on the off chance that it was damp, then picked his way through a gap in the bushes toward her.
He forced an obviously shy smile as he reached to wrap his hand around hers. The last time he'd purposefully touched a girl had been the girl at the book store, and it felt like a year and a half since they'd been stuck together in that snowstorm. He couldn't think of another word to say. God, she was hot.

Lafra was pulled up the soreness was gone for the most part so she was able to stand tall, but he still had at least 4 inches on her. Lafra couldn't tell if he was being timid, if she caught him off guard, or if this was just how he acted; either way she found it adorable.
"Nice to meet you."
Before releasing his hand she shook it then let it drop just as quick. Lafra gave him a quick once over, maybe he was someone she ran into more than a few times, or maybe she had classes with him, but a quick look confirmed that she didn't recognize him; she wondered how she didn't bump into him.
"I'm apologize if my tone was a bit harsh, but you kinda startled me."
What was harsh in Lafra's books was gentle to the rest of the world; it had to be because of how soft spoken she was even now as she talked to him her voice was small and smooth. It wasn't like she did it on purpose, but it wouldn't really hurt her if she spoke up a bit.

"No, it's fine," Indigo said, his voice softer and more hesitant than he'd prefer it to be. "I mean, uh, it wasn't harsh or anything." What had she said that was harsh, anyway? The comment that had pulled him out of hiding was already forgotten. It was difficult to remember anything before that extended moment of contact.
It was a handshake, he reminded himself, but still, it was a reason to hold her hand a few seconds longer, and as introverted as he could be, he at least had a confident handshake. It was something he'd worked on, actually. He'd read somewhere that people can decide whether they like you just by how you gripped their hand. Wait... had he done it right? Was he just standing here staring? Oh God, what was her name?
He shifted slightly on his feet, trying to think of something witty to say. He could get girls no problem online, but he simply couldn't bring himself to say any of the crap he said in the forums. "So... hi." Idiot.

Lafra wanted to laugh, his seemingly awkwardness was rather cute, but his firm handshake said otherwise. What was more intriguing to her though was his name Indigo. She wasn't sure why, but people really liked to name their kids after colors, she had heard of people calling their sons names that portray characteristics parents wanted their kids to have; she heard foreign translations of strength, honor, wisdom and others, but Indigo... this was a first.
"Hi to you too Indigo."
Lafra shyly looked downwards, she wasn't good wit verbalising words in her mind, give her a pencil and paper and sure she could write, throw her in a crowd and the results could be disastrous.
"What brings you this far away from the castle, thought it was just me and my friends over there."
She was referring to the giant squid as she nodded her head towards the lake. This was probably the best way she could think of to start a conversation; Lafra was surprised she herself didn't stutter, maybe she was just getting better at human to human contact.

Indigo couldn't help smiling, though his gaze remained out over the lake. "Guess we have friends in common," he said. He glanced back at Lafra—he was sure that was her name—then down to the grass-spotted dirt beneath his fashionably tattered shoes. "I've only seen it once, though," he admitted. And it hadn't been today.
He didn't want to say that he hadn't been outside more than he'd had to in months, so that was as far as that went. He wished that real life was more like the internet, that he could pause and give a quick search to find her and find out what she liked. If she was into outdoorsy stuff and nature, he'd make an effort. But she'd asked him a question, so he let that go. If she was into it, maybe she'd mention it again, right?"
"I was just, like, doing homework..." Lame and a lie. "Messing around, you know?" Messing around instead of doing homework would be more honest, though he'd been straying toward finishing that essay for Professor Sin. He shrugged, though that seemingly casual motion still felt somewhat tense. "It was just nice out side, you know?
