Shianni had been surprised by just how hard it was to start out a schooling career. The challenge had pleased her, however, and she had met it head on, fighting back against the sudden change and coming out ahead. Of course, she had to do battle with her students and their general lack of caring about the subject, as well, but that had been expected. Just now she was getting used to her life, getting into a rhythm that kept her on top of things but with enough downtime that she did not lose her mind. She had yet to visit the little village by the school, and the first shop she went into was the book shop, hoping to expand her personal library just a bit.

Rowan only distantly heard the tinkling of the bells over the door. His attention was fixed on a book from the best-sellers shelf near the front of the store, the first of a new series by one of his favorite authors, and after a moment he tucked it under his arm with a stack of three others he'd found elsewhere. He looked up, and his gaze caught on a familiar face. "Professor Veridian," he said in greeting.
He was in his street clothes, class having ended hours ago. His glasses remained perched atop his nose, but he knew that without his professor's robes, he still passed for a student. He was only a few years out of school, so it was understandable.

"Oh, Professor Trace, I did not recognize you," Shianni said, smiling and nodding her head. She was in a simple dress, as no matter her independent streak she had never understood the obsession other girls had with trousers. "How have your classes been doing so far?" Her gaze floated over his shoulder to hover on the display he had turned from before focusing again.

"Things are going well," Rowan said. "In fact, the students have been incredibly quiet. I keep hearing a certain incident on the Hogwarts Express mentioned." His lips curved slightly at that, and he abandoned the shelves to approach, rather than talk across the store. "I imagine the Slytherins are pretty unhappy," he added. Two of the very group who'd been assigned so many collective detentions had then lost theiir House a record number of points, and there hadn't been a hint of misbehavior since. It felt like the calm before the storm, somehow.

Shianni smiled and her eyes sparkled. Maybe she stood a bit taller. "My students were rather subdued once they learned I am unafraid to take points." That was not to say they were at all interested in what she was saying, but at least they kept their murmurings to a minimum and sat in sullen silence rather than openly complain most of the time.

"Yes, I'm doing the same in my own classes," Rowan said. He gave a light sigh. "My first year I made the mistake of trying to relate too closely to them. Not one student decided to call me by my name, and I had grand ideas that they'd work harder for me if I didn't seem distant." He arched an eyebrow in declaration of just how well that had gone.
"Speaking of which, please call me Rowan. I intend to remain at Hogwarts, and there's little sense keeping things formal there." As he'd learned the hard way, with months in Keith's company.

Shianni inclined her head, "You may call me Shianni, then." She saw nothing wrong with being on a first name basis with her coworkers. "Relating to the students is a weakness," she said. "A professor should show that they are in control, new professors especially can not afford to show the weakness that comes with too much familiarity with the students." She did not intend to be inaccessible to the students, but she refused to attempt to befriend them. It was a business relationship, not a friendship.

"A conclusion I probably would have reached on my own, if I'd taken time off between graduating and teaching," Rowan agreed. Unfortunately, his head had still been filled with the thoughts of a student, with the echoes of other students' complaints and compliments about their own professors, and he'd begun before gathering any real-world experience.
"I wasn't about to pass on my dream job though," he went on. "I learned through trial-and error, but I did so quickly, and the Headmistress has been supportive." That supportiveness was truly one of her strengths.

"I wish I had been able to start just after graduation," Shianni said, with an almost wistful tone to her voice. "My mother insisted on teaching me all the ins and outs of Society life, however, and it took me much too long to get away." If she had not had her father's apathy on her side, she would probably still be in Peru, wincing at the sweating little men dressed up in ancient robes and greased hair.
