Rowan shook his head slightly, though the motion was lost with the way they were walking. Hopefully they were nearing the top of the staircase. "Until a year ago, he was a student," he said. Though Chase hadn't been one who'd left the school constantly, he'd had his own string of problems that Rowan wasn't comfortable discussing.
"He's also Slytherin Head of House, and his own students dislike him because he has no qualms about taking away their house points. This past year, no house finished with fifty points or more. The year before that, they were all in the hundreds. He's working, but the first thing he tried didn't seem to have much effect. Give him five or ten years and who knows what we'll see."

Shianni turned to the side when she reached the top of the stairs to let Rowan ahead of her to lead the way again. "In five or ten years all of the students will have been replaced," she pointed out. If all the students were gone, the problem was gone, theoretically at least. "I was always under the impression that this school was kept in check as much by the students as by the professors." From what she had heard, losing points was enough to get a person shunned for an evening.

"Things have changed," Rowan said, at a loss as to why, or how, or exactly when. "There are prefects who abuse their power, but not enough to get the privilege revoked, and if someone loses House Points, the anger is directed toward the professor, not the student. The pride of attending Hogwarts still draws people, but it's not enough to affect them while they're here." That was something he hadn't thought of before, actually. Yes, the Slytherins had pride in themselves, but it was for Slytherin as a group and not at all for the school.

"Perhaps they have become complacent in this long bought of relative peace," Shianni said. She could not say that many of the students at her school had had school pride other than her and a handful of friends. "Hogwarts was once a safe haven, was it not?" Her father had gone to school at Hogwarts, though he rarely spoke of it.

"Yes, it was, and to an extent it still is. Some of the students are intensely loyal—the Headmaster, for example—but it's the exception rather than the rule. There's definitely complacency at work, from the students, their parents, and some of the staff." Rowan shook his head. He'd gone over this a hundred times, but in the end he was the only one who cared, wasn't he?

"Perhaps a roving band of deterrents is necessary," Shianni said, her eyes glinting as she glanced at Rowan in a way that could have just as easily been a joke as an actual solution. Her lips curved in amusement as she looked ahead again. There was nothing wrong with a little nudge in the right direction and a little punishment for going the other way.

Rowan looked aside at Professor Veridian, whose given name he had yet to remember. He wondered if it was a suggestion or an idea, but didn't know her at all, and wouldn't begin to ask. He was still discouraged by the disappointment of Keith, but he'd reminded himself that all his accomplishments had been reached alone. He'd find a solution and put it into action himself. "Perhaps," he said.

"Of course, I am not entirely sure just what punishments are allowed here," Shianni continued. Her remote school had not seemed to be too worried on the few occasions she knew students had been punished. She knew she could give detentions and remove points, but the students did not seem to care in the slightest about those things.

"Corporal punishment has gone the way of bellbottom robes," Rowan said, keeping to himself the thought that the tools for said punishment were likely still in the dungeons somewhere. "Just House Points and detentions, really. You can assign any kinds of chores as detention, but most just sit in the detention room for an hour."

Shianni was silent as she thought. As an entirely new professor, really what was there that she could do to possibly change the situation? She could not even be sure what the issue exactly was. Hearing it and knowing were far apart. "Why have they not been banned from leaving?" she asked. It seemed by far the simplest solution.

"I honestly don't know," Rowan said. "I wouldn't put it past Chase to do, but he reports to Hells, and she's always given people the benefit of the douubt." Which had both redeemed people and brought tragedy, by turns.

Shianni nodded, but had no other questions to ask on the issue. The acknowledgement of the school's flaws did little to make her regret taking the position. In fact, it only strengthened her resolve to stay and make a difference at the school, to exert herself and prove her own worth. She was silent as she walked by the professor, wondering how long it would take to learn the social structure of the school.
