Shianni had fallen in love with the school as soon as she walked in the doors. Other than the girl that had racked up three detentions within five minutes, she had not had any issues with the school. She was not entirely sure where she was going just now, but learning a little about the corridors surely would not be a bad idea. The place really was beautiful.

Rowan had long become accustomed to the unique environment of Hogwarts and wasn't paying a bit of attention to the scenery. He was on his way from his office to his quarters, and his mind was on the coming term. Anything to keep it off Keith. He'd reunited with his friends after a longer separation than usual and apologized for his unexpected holiday, but told them quite clearly that if he heard one more question about his coworker, they would all be drinking through holes in their throats.
With that taken care of, he sought solace where he always found it, in his work and his routines. He hadn't been bad enough to count steps in ages, but he'd found himself doing so, and for the sake of being able to concentrate later, was allowing himself the obsessive little quirk. Fifty-seven steps and he'd reach the place where the corridor opened, and he would turn right.

"Hello," Shianni said. "You are the Charms professor, are you not? Rowan Trace?" She had heard his name, and she had been sure to memorize the names as soon as possible. It was always a good idea to get to know the people she would be around, and knowing more professors was more power within the school, something she would need if there were many more students like that Pansy girl.

Rowan looked up from the book he'd been absently looking into, and stopped, making a mental note of what step he'd been on, since he was doing that. "I am," he replied. "Professor Veridian?" She had some odd given name that sounded like something out of a Muggle novel, but he would do fine without it. "I hope you're finding everything all right." What he hoped was that she wouldn't disturb him. He'd had enough of that to last him years.

Shianni gave a light shrug, "As well as can be expected. This castle is like a maze. The school I grew up in was much smaller." It had only had a fraction of the students, much less of the floor space Hogwarts had. Her steps stopped as she came upon the man and she looked at him, letting her eyes trail over him before they settled on his blue ones.

Inwardly, Rowan groaned. This sounded suspiciously like an intro into a conversation he wanted nothing to do with. He gave a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "And where was that?" he asked politely, as though he cared. He didn't close the book just yet, still hoping that she might suddenly decide she needed to be somewhere else.

"Peru, Huayna Picchu overlooking Machu Picchu. It was a wonderful place, beautiful and full of hidden history. But I have everything I could get from there, I simply could not resist coming to the famous Hogwarts," Shianni said. She put the ring on her left hand firmly out of her mind, she was not going to be tied down by the thing when there were so many opportunities here.

Peru? "I'm afraid I don't know much about Peru," Rowan said, though he thought he'd read something about Huayna Picchu in some History of Magic class or another. "Is it true they give Muggle tours nearby?" He remembered thinking it odd to allow Muggles so close and so regularly, when typically, spells were put up to keep them away. He couldn't imagine that so many centuries of students had managed not to slip up.

"Machu Picchu is open to anyone," Shianni said, nodding. "Tours to Huayna Picchu are rather limited, and typically are not even Muggles. They are kept away because of the danger and to protect the site." The mountain top really was not any more dangerous than its sister peak, but it was higher, and apparently that was enough to make most Muggles accept it.

Rowan gave a thoughtful hm, and decided that, for the moment at least, he could stand to close his book. "I suddenly wish I'd stayed at Beauxbatons longer," he mused. "It's one of few schools I've been to that covered International schooling, though really, it only touched on things outside Europe. Did you learn much about Hogwarts at Huayna Picchu?" Apparently enough to want to teach at Hogwarts, but who knew if that was due to formal education?

"A small bit," Shianni said. "There was a short, extra course we could take during our fourth year which taught us about some of the major international schools." She had jumped on the opportunity. How could she give up the chance to learn of all the places she would like to visit? Looking for possible future employment had been a pleasant perk to the course.

"Sounds interesting," Rowan said. And that was all he had to add to the conversation. "Well, it was nice meeting you, Professor Veridian. I'm sure you'll grow to love Hogwarts." Or it would grow on her, rather, like a Devil's Snare. "I'll leave you to what you were doing."

"It was nice to meet you, as well," Shianni said. "Could you by any chance direct me to the astronomy tower? I have been assured it is high but I can not imagine that the sky will be so clear here as it was back home." She had been given directions, but without retracing her steps back to the entrance hall, she knew she would be unable to pick her way there.

Rowan's jaw tensed imperceptibly before he forced a smile. "Of course," he said. This was going to severely cut into his reading time, and he silently cursed himself for having responded to her at all. What was it about him that made the new professors so eager to talk? He hadn't had these problems as a student. And why didn't he just give her verbal directions and leave her here? He mentally sighed. "This way," he said. Forty-one steps until he'd reach the place where the corridor opened, and they would turn left, instead.

"Oh, thank you," Shianni said, turning to follow him. "I hope it will not take me long to learn my way around here, I am generally fairly good at directions." At least, when it came to the outdoors she was good, studying the skies tended to give a slight advantage in that arena. "How long have you been here?" she asked, looking over at him.
