Keith's smile faltered and his eyes fell at the idea of him taking the easy road, but he brushed it aside. "I did," he said when he looked up again. "I took Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, and Transfiguration." Four classes had felt like an insanely full schedule, he didn't know how the kids that took more had been able to handle it.

Rowan nodded his approval. "Transfiguration is difficult magic," he said. "Are you interested in it?" He was trying to see how Transfiguration tied into Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and Potions, but fell short. Care of Magical Creatures had surprised him a bit, but he supposed it went with Wizarding Agriculture.

Keith shrugged, "It's useful for some things. I'm not as good at it as the others, but I like it enough, I got a NEWT out of it." It didn't really fit in with his other classes, but it had been more so he didn't feel bogged down by just taking classes that went with his future career than anything else.

"I took NEWT-level Transfiguration too," Rowan said. "It's related to Charms and I like it well enough, but not enough to make a career of it. I thought it would be a good support class." He'd taken any subject he could twist his mind to relate, because he'd known about the turnover rate at Hogwarts. If wanted hired at not-quite-18, he knew he'd need a damned good reason for them to bypass candidates with possibly more experience.

"I actually met Dare one day last week," Keith said. "He was outside with his dog. He seems cool enough." It hadn't been the most productive meeting, but it was nice to meet another member of the faculty that was fairly easy to talk to. Of course, meeting Elouai was a plus. He probably needed to try to be more social with his coworkers, though.

Rowan nodded, and his gaze moved out through the greenery. "I've heard about that dog," he said. "Big black wild-looking thing? Haven't actually seen it, but some of the students worry about their cats." He was sure Hells wouldn't let in a dangerous animal, but then it did seem sometimes that she had favorites.

"She seemed well trained," Keith said. "She was sweet, energetic, but sweet." The cats were probably safe, considering he doubted the dog was let out without supervision. Cats seemed to be along the same lines, but he saw more of them wandering the halls than he would certainly be comfortable with if he had a pet.

"Then I'll take what the kids say with a grain of salt," Rowan said. He normally did anyway, but now and then something cane up that was an actual concern, like the amount of student drinking, and he took note. He'd never heard of that dog actually doing anything, but he'd tucked it away in his mind all the same.

"Animals can get along fine together, really," Keith said. "More often than a lot of people think, it's just stereotypes and stuff, you know?" He stood when the vine slipped its way back over to him to go to it and see if there was something wrong with it. "I should probably actually try to listen to the kids sometimes, though, I tend to tune them out when it's not class time."

Rowan nodded slightly. He really didn't know enough about animals to respond to Keith's first comment, but thankfully he was able to follow the second. "I watch the kids pack up," he said. "Make sure they don't leave things behind that they'll want me to fetch later, things like that. Can't help overhearing gossip, complaints about homework."

Keith knelt in front of the vine and shrugged. "It's probably a good idea to listen to them," he said, running careful hands over the vine to find what it was so worked up about. "I'm just so glad they're not trying to be buddy buddy with me that it's hard to let myself do it." Like if he did it then he would end up back to where he had been at his old job.

"Ah," Rowan said. "I never knew any of them, and I don't strike up conversations outside academics, so it hasn't been a problem. I've been here a year and I'm still invisible, so I'm not worried." Observing was a far cry from getting personally involved.

"I'll get around to it," Keith said absently before his attention was focused on his work. He didn't want to blow Rowan off, but it was easy to forget conversation when his hands were busy doing some kind of work.

Rowan waited a few moments for Keith to say anything else, but it was obvious he'd been pulled back to his work. "I should be going," he said. "I'll see you around, though. Is that open invitation still up?" He didn't have any specific plans to visit, but if he felt like it, he wanted to be sure it was still an option.

Keith was pulled out of his work and looked over at Rowan, "Oh, yeah, definitely. Sorry, I just got distracted." He didn't want Rowan to think he was just blowing him off or anything, it just happened sometimes when there was something he didn't know about. "You can come over whenever, and I'll see you next Tuesday, at least, right?"
