"You could say that," Rowan replied. "It's what I started with, and apparently I had a knack for it, and it was encouraged." He was glad for the question, if only because he'd been near leaving moments before. He was certain that telling Keith his Charms were likely imprecise because he wasn't doing them right would be impolite at best. And yet he rephrased that very statement to fit the new topic. "Charms never disappoint once you've learned them well. Yes, potions are easily as versatile, but I enjoy wandwork."

"I was always better with my hands," Keith said. "I mean, I can use a wand well enough, but it doesn't come as easily. Maybe I'll have to get some tips from you." It could be useful having the Charms professor as a friend, even if he really didn't see much reason to improve on his wandwork now. He had gotten this far with his skill level, anyway.

"Maybe," Rowan agreed. Definitely. "You use more than your hands for wandwork, anyway. It can take your wrists and shoulders, your body, concentration and emotion, depending on the spell. Either way, confidence plays a large part." Most of those things came naturally to him, and with both his studies and constant practice, most of it was instinctual now.

A smile spread across Keith's face as Rowan spoke. Even if what he was saying were just facts, it was obvious he loved Charms. Keith could use all the things Rowan listed, but he apparently had just never learned how to use them in a more academic sense. "I guess I just need to learn, but there's always more to learn, right?" Maybe it would work better if it was a peer showing him.

Rowan's lips curved in unconscious echo of Keith's as he nodded. "Always," he said. There were endless spells, combinations of spells, and differing responses you could get from the same spell. Charms were woven into other subjects, and were, unarguably, the magical discipline used most in everyday life. "If you want, we could set up a time to work on it," he offered. Something as regular as extracurricular lessons would require tinkering to his weekly schedule.

"That sounds good," Keith said. He wouldn't mind doing something like that, it was probably a good idea to try, anyway. Besides, if the guy could try to teach him how to dance, he could probably teach him how to use charms a little bit better. "When do you want to try? I don't have much of a schedule outside of classes yet."

Rowan gave the question a moment's thought before replying. "Tuesday afternoons would work best," he said. "I don't normally assign homework on Mondays, so I should have time." It would cut into other things, but he supposed he could handle extending his regular schedule to one more day, albeit teaching charms rather than correcting charms papers.

Keith nodded, he had nothing to do to keep that from being a good time to meet up. "I'd offer the greenhouse to meet up in but I don't see you liking that idea," he said. Besides, it wasn't exactly the most ideal place for practicing anything other than herbology. "Any ideas, send me back to class?" he asked, smiling and swinging his legs absently beneath him.

"I thought you'd want to do it in your quarters," Rowan said. "It doesn't really matter where we do it, as long as it's away from the students." He didn't respond to Keith's comment about the greenhouse. No, it wasn't on his mental list, but there was no reason to rub that in. "We could always just use the Charms classroom."

Keith shook his head, "No, my rooms would be fine." He might've had some thoughts about creative uses of a classroom, but his mind wasn't there just then. "Hopefully I'll be a good student," he said. As long as he didn't frustrate Rowan enough to storm out or anything, he thought he would be a quick learner. Hopefully.

Rowan's lips curved slightly. "I'm sure you'll be fine," he said. Keith had done well enough over the weekend, and he hadn't seemed sure he'd wanted to learn any of that in the first place. Rowan set the thought aside. "I'll be at your quarters next Tuesday," he said. "Don't get offended if I ask you basic stuff, I usually take the first class or two to find students' personal levels."

"You won't offend me," Keith said. "You've got to know where I'm at to make me better, right?" It made sense, it would be hard to start off the lessons without figuring out where exactly to start. "I mean, I passed my OWL, but I didn't go to NEWT level." He hadn't had any need to when he knew exactly what he wanted to focus on.

Rowan's brows arched slightly, and he made a quick mental note. He knew that a lot of his peers had taken as few NEWTs as possible, focusing only on their future careers, but it surprised him nonetheless. He had taken a full class load until graduation simply because he wanted as much out of his eduucation as he could get. "That narrows it down a lot," he said.

"Think less of me, now?" Keith asked. He gave an easy smile, but his eyes gave away that he was at least a little worried it would hurt his chances of keeping Rowan as a friend. Not going on to NEWT level in a few classes wasn't something he was ashamed of, though he knew how it could look to some people.

"That would be hypocritical," Rowan said, as close as he'd get to referencing the weekend. He immediately set it aside, turning his mind back to school. "Just surprised. You didn't strike me as someone who'd take the easy road." He didn't catch the possible slam in his own words. It was just the truth as he saw it. Keith was intelligent and obviously hardworking, and since he'd always focused on academics as a whole, he'd made an erroneous assumption.
"Did you take any other NEWTs, just out of curiosity?" He wouldn't blame Keith if Charms had just been cut out of the increasingly varied options available by 7th Year. Most didn't know the extent of Charms, and to be honest with himself, Potions would be the most logical companion to Herbology anyway.
