Keith laughed lightly at that. "I know, it's horrible. I was always under the impression that you turn in a polished piece, not one with doodles all over. The older professors I used to work with never had the issue, according to them. Of course, they never got the batting eyelashes or dress-code-pushing tops, either." Apparently just because he was younger the girls had thought he would be interested. He could have laughed at how wrong they were.

"I haven't had that problem," Rowan said. "Possibly because there was a firing and an expulsion a few years ago. It was all over the Daily Prophet, so I can only imagine how big the news was at the school itself. The biggest problem I've had..." He paused a moment to get his phrasing right. "There was a student in my first class who had such a spectacular failure at a spell she chose to demonstrate that she knocked herself unconscious. And she was pregnant." He thought that said it all.

"You've got to be joking," Keith said, staring at Rowan in disbelief. A pregnant student had definitely not been a worry at his school, even with all of the heavy flirting, and that had to be a seriously bad attempt at a spell for her to do that. "What spell was it?" In charms, too. Well, Rowan officially had the prize of the most interesting first class ever.

Rowan arched an eyebrow. "Accio," he said. "She had a metal box in her book bag and was apparently testing herself to see if she should be in class by using a spell she already knew she couldn't perform properly. The students keep themselves as far away from professors as possible, in general. Just watch out for the stupid ones."

Keith raised an eyebrow and, as unprofessional as it was, couldn't help smiling and shaking his head. "That's absolutely ridiculous. I have to say I've never had a student knock themselves out during a class before. But then, that's kind of hard to do with a plant. Well, most plants, anyway." And he kept students firmly away from any that might cause harm until he was certain they wouldn't hurt themselves. "My old students tried to suck up as much as possible, though."

Rowan sighed. "Mine just do what's necessary to pass, then flirt with each other. I could be a hundred and thirteen for all they care. I ran into one in London last week who was apparently alone and drunk. It seems sometimes like all they do at school is sleep and get free food, then take the Knight Bus elsewhere. I'm glad I knew what I was getting into before I applied."

"I knew Hogwarts had a bit of drama attached to it, but I had no idea the students were able to get off campus regularly, especially to London," Keith said, shaking his head again. "That's quite a bit away, for them to go. I've never been, myself." He had wanted to go to the city, just hadn't had the chance to do it yet, even with how relatively close he had been.

"They have more freedom now than they did during the wars," Rowan said. "It stuns me that they abuse it, that their parents never say a word, and that not one cares if their House Points are nonexistent. Hufflepuff has no House Points. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it every day."

Keith wasn't sure that was even possible, but he saw no reason for Rowan to lie about something like that. "This place is unbelievable. My parents would have killed me had I left like that, and I would have killed my house-mates had they not cared about our house standing." The houses had always been very competitive, losing points earned you the cold shoulder for a week.

"There was apparently a battle here a few years ago. Some nutjob Death Eaters who thought You-Know-Who was still around attacked the school. Two students died, the Order of the Phoenix showed up, and this place has been a detention center more than an educational facility ever since. I had grand ideas of digging my heels in and trying to make a difference, but so far haven't accomplished much." He shook his head. He still hadn't found the means of doing so.

"I'd help you, if you wanted a partner in such a noble task," Keith offered with a small smile. He would be willing to help out if it meant a better schooling environment for everyone. From the sound of it, the school needed help. Perhaps that was why the headmaster had been so intent on him not lasting very long in the position.

Rowan shook his head again. "The whole faculty needs to work together on this. One or two people aren't going to fix a school that took hundreds of years to tear down." He listened to himself, then sighed again. "Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up, but at this point I'm still trying to find a possible answer to any of it."

"Two minds are better than one, they always say," Keith said. "I mean, I don't know how bad it all really is, and two people can't do it all alone, but it's always better to have someone to bounce ideas off of. Besides, if you need the whole faculty, wouldn't it be best to go ahead and start building Rowan's Army?" He didn't know where to start, but at least it was a start.

That got a chuckle out of Rowan. "You a history buff?" he asked, looking aside at Keith. "'Cause that was a good one." And yet, he didn't see any group of students who'd stand up and demand a full class schedule with active classes and regular tests. Half his students had been absent from class for months.

"Well, I mean, you have to start somewhere, right?" Just a group of teachers, maybe a few students, even, could help out. "But no, I'm not really a history buff." Keith knew the story of Dumbledore's Army, though, that was a story that was hard to forget once it was heard. At least he had gotten a laugh, however small, from Rowan.
