Ryan walked out to the lake. He had been gone for some time, and was glad to be back. The last few months had been very stressful, a lot of things happening back home which is why he had been gone. He walked to the edge of the lake and looked out and smiled. He had missed Hogwarts so much, and missed some of the people even more. Ryan looked out for a little longer and decided to go for a swim. He took off his shirt and shoes and jumped in the lake. He swam around for a little bit and smiled. As he stopped he looked up and saw someone coming from the castle. He looked harder to try and see who it was.

Vannah had an inclination to make another trip back to the Forbidden Forest. Despite her latest venture into the Forest, which had earned her a full week of detention, it was still the one place where she could be alone. But when Vannah had decided to come back to Hogwarts, she had also decided that she needed to pull herself out of this funk her life had turned into. So far she hadn't been doing very well with that. In an attempt to go to a place where it was more likely to run into another human being, but still unlikely to be incredibly crowded, Vannah veered to the left and made her way to the Lake. It was as hot as most days had been that summer and the sky threatened rain, but the cool breeze coming from the Lake felt refreshing. It wasn't until Vannah actually got to the Lake that she realized there was someone else there. Well, they were swimming in the Lake while she was simply standing on the edge, fully clothed. "Ryan?" Vannah said softly, squinting to make sure the face matched. To her delight and slight horror, it did. She wasn't sure if she was ready to see him. It had been enough of a shock with Chase, especially with the news of his promotion, and she hadn't expected it to be any easier with Ryan.

The familiar voice hit Ryan with a wave of emotions. He missed Vannah more than anything else at the school, but their last few meetings didn't end up so good. It had been a long time since he had last seen her. Ryan went to the edge and stood in front of Vannah "Hi, Vannah." he said softly, at a loss for what else he could say. He looked into her eyes, the person that he loved more than anything on this earth.

"Er...hi!" Vannah said, perhaps a little too quickly. Her voice sounded fake, high-pitched and overly excited. She had the hollow, jumpy, nervous feeling creeping into the pit of her stomach. What was she supposed to say that wasn't going to sound completely lame? Her eyes shifted down, following him as he moved closer. She probably should have bent down so the height different from him being in the water and her standing above on the ground didn't seem so awkward, but she was too frozen to move. "How are you?" She asked. It was what generically came after Hi, but as soon as it slipped out, she regretted it. She had disappeared from him without any explanation. It wasn't any consolation, but she had disappeared from everyone without any explanation. She had thought she loved Ryan, even though such a thing seemed so hard to believe now. It didn't seem like she was capable of loving someone anymore, whether she ever had or not. She wasn't ready to give it another go, especially with how things blew up in her face before. Vannah's eyebrows arched slightly, hoping her eyes didn't reflect the seemingly permanent hollowness that had taken over her.

Ryan looked at her and sighed. How was he? He had no clue how to answer that when he didn't know how he was. He looked at her and said "Not so good." which was both an understatement and completely untrue at the same time. "Everything seems to be going wrong that can go wrong." he said softly, almost in a whisper as the thoughts of the past few months hit him, and he fought back a few tears. "What about you? How are you?" he asked softly as he got out of the lake and sat on the edge, looking out into the distance.

"I'm sorry, Ryan." Vannah said. Well, she was sorry that his life wasn't what he wanted it to be. She knew more than most people how that was. She didn't know how to be sorry for the way she treated him, though she was sure she had warned him the last time she ran into him that she needed to be alone. Vannah gave up on her journey to the Forest as she sat down at the edge of the Lake. Her legs were stretched out in front of her, crossed at the ankles, and leaned back on the palms of her hands. How was she? That was a loaded question. She was walking around with a fake smile, pretending like everything was fine now, when really all she wanted to do was curl up into a ball and sleep for endless hours. "I'm fine, I guess." She said finally with a shrug. It was a simple, vague answer.

Ryan looked over at Vannah, knowing that she wasn't being really truthful. "You should know by now that I know when you aren't telling the truth. Now really, how are you?" he asked as he looked back out at the lake. He was always pretty good at reading people, but with Vannah he was always better at it than with most other people.

Vannah turned her head so that her focus was on Ryan. She lifted her eyebrow in question. "I'm fine." She repeated in the same level tone. "You should know by now that if I say I'm fine, you should trust me enough to know that I can take care of myself." She answered back. What was he looking for? For her to bury her head in his chest, breathe in his familiar scent, and blurt out her deepest feelings that she didn't even know she had? She couldn't, mostly because she was too numb to know what her deepest feelings were anymore and partly because she was too stubborn to admit to any of them.

Ryan sighed softly. He knew that he wasn't going to get anything out of her about how she was feeling. "So what have you been getting into lately?" he asked, not knowing what to do. He wished that things were back to the way that they used to be. He missed being with Vannah so badly, but he could tell that the Vannah that he loved was long gone. He kept looking out at the lake as he tried harder to fight the tears that threatened to fall from his eyes.

Vannah shrugged. "Not much." She said. Pandora and Storm, the only two people she felt worthy enough of her time seemed to have disappeared and she didn't have any motivation to find a new crew. "I guess just school stuff." She said, her voice monotonous. Whatever happened? She used to have fun. "What about you?" As Vannah asked the question, she turned her head to the side to get a good look at him. She read the expression on his face without really meaning to. It was a familiar one and she knew very well what was most likely to come next. She blinked, suddenly worried. She didn't know if she could handle him crying. It was too much. It felt like every time she had seen him he ended up crying and she was the person who held the most blame for it. She thought about this for a moment. She could always leave if he started crying, to save herself the familiar twinge of pain it brought and that creeping guilt that would seep through her from it.

Ryan was able to fight off the tears and kept looking straight out at the lake "A whole lot of family problems." he said softly. That was mostly an understatement with everything that had been going on with his parents. Ryan knew that Vannah was looking at him, but he couldn't bring himself to look her in the eyes. He didn't want this to turn into something about them, because he had a good feeling that it would not end up good for him.

((knock knock, mind if I come in?))
Yes, Brindle heard the voices, as quiet as they might have been. But there was only so far she could skirt around the lake without getting into the deep brush at the forest's edge. She'd just walk on by and they could pretend they hadn't seen her, and she could go work on her routine away from the hustle and bustle of the castle.
It was a good plan and it might have worked had she not glanced over, a flickering reflex she couldn't have controlled. Ryan. She'd blocked him from her thoughts months ago, but she'd had reason to think of him lately, and here he was. With girl whose identity she could only begin to guess.
"Uh, sorry," she said. And yet her feet had stopped instead of carrying her past like they were supposed to.

"I'm so sorry, Ryan." Vannah said as she slipped her hand over his and gave it a light squeeze. She remembered him telling her about certain issues that were going on within his family in the last few times they had run into each other. It didn't seem fair that such a sweet guy was having such a rough time, but then again there were lots of things in life that weren't fair.
Vannah's head whipped around as a voice cut through the pregnant pause she had let fill up the air. Another blonde, one she didn't recognize, seemed to have said something. An apology, perhaps? But what for? It didn't seem like she had done anything worth apologizing for. "Yes?" Vannah said eyeing the girl. Why the hell was she still standing there? Vannah's eyes narrowed suspiciously. The last thing she wanted was another ridiculous rumor about her printed in the Daily Prophet.

Ryan closed his eyes trying hard to fight off all the emotions hitting him when Vannah grabbed his hand. A tear ran down his cheek, but it was the cheek facing away from her and he doubted she saw it. He then heard another girls voice and turned his head slightly. Brindle. Not the best of people to show up right now. He did not want a huge fight at this point, he didn't think he would be able to take it. He looked back out at the lake and stayed quiet, hoping nothing would happen.

Oh my God, Brindle thought. He's crying! She shouldn't be here, shouldn't be dwelling over the amazing kisses they'd shared or the things he'd said to her here, by the lake, that morning. Wow. That was the best kiss I have ever had, he'd said. And she hadn't seen him since. She was mortified, and she so shouldn't be thinking about that right now!
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." Brindle felt a hot prickle at the bridge of her nose, and she refused to cry. She was stronger than that, and it had only been one day, one unforgettable day. Damn the timing of her damn allergies! She took a step back, then dragged her gaze away. "Sorry, I'll just... I'll go..." As soon as she could get her feet to move!
