In honor of Magikal's Fifth Birthday, I thought we'd take a little walk down memory lane and revisit the great scandals of our past, as written in the Daily Prophet's gossip columns. Do you recall the days when the Prophet kept its victims' subjects' names anonymous? Do you recall how many writers the gossip column has seen in its five year run? Or are you just arriving and wondering how you'll ever learn enough history to stay afloat? Well, read on. This will be fun, darlings.
Boy or Girl?
In July 2005 it was rumored that a "certain couple" was engaged and expecting. By the mother's choice of sweets alone (iced mice, anyone?) it was simple enough to tell who that couple was. But what the article didn't tell was the future of the child and the duplicitous father-that-never-was. Any time people die, it's big news. Rest in Pieces, Wolfsbane.
Ryan Magby
As one of Magikal's oldest remaining members, this Hufflepuff Heartthrob has been in more fixes than the Cleansweeps in the Quidditch shed. As early as February 2006 it was rumored that "Ryan had tried to make Rebecca [Wagner] do something she didn't want to," causing her to flee. This could become a list of his conquests, including Savannah Brooks, Storm Seyrrou, and Pandora D'Winter, but I ought to mention his short-lived engagement to then-fifth-year Gabby Brocklehurst. It's been mentioned now, so let's move on. Like Ryan did after she left.
The Bloody Mary
Hogsmeade's nightclub has been up and running since March 2006, and the drama it has seen would be enough for its own article. Its first mention reported pole-dancing, strippers, and crates of firewhiskey! Well, all that got the over-16 lounge closed for a while, but that didn't stop the club from moving on. And now, with the lounge open again, we can only wait and see what excitement it holds this time.
Julius Saturn
He doesn't deserve a mention, that slimy git, but he gets one anyway for the sheer amount of trouble he caused during his so-called life. By April 2006 he had already killed several people, but claimed to be back on the straight and narrow. At this point in Magikal's history being a Death Eater was all the rage, and who was he not to jump on the bandwagon? Well, he was only in minor skiffs for a while, but his greatest triumph came in May 2008 when he was caught having an illicit affair with a student. He was sacked of course, and not long after tried to murder that student, one Cassie Jones. But this is Julius, darlings. The spell backfired and he killed himself. C'est la mort, eh?
School of Rock
The School of Rock was a short-lived but well-known entity at Hogwarts. Professor Geno Simpson insulted those students who attempted to join his 'band' and eventually the entire thing died out, but not without leaving behind quite a legacy for those who attended.
Warlock Sands
Magikal's first birthday was spent at this beach resort. Students and professors alike basked in the sun, enjoyed a pool and quidditch court, and shared their own little dramas. And Rebecca Wagner was found at a restaurant there. Fancy that.
Headmistress Hells
Our own Headmistress has had more than her share of drama and scandal. There was the well-publicized incident with Professor Wolfsbane, and then her semi-secret relationship with the aforementioned Julius Saturn. After the idiot left her, rumors abounded that she was cursed in the love department. And here's a little secret that no one talks about but everyone knows; our Headmistress has been clandestinely seeing one of her other professors on the sly for nearly two years. And yet there's been no hint of a real relationship on the wind. Is that why it's lasted so long? And why wasn't he promoted to Deputy Headmaster? It opens up some questions about her relationship with the current one, doesn't it?
Sabbaticals and the Boat Party
Yours truly has been unable to locate gossip from October 2006 to the column's renewal in March of 2008. Was Magikal dead for a year and a half? No, actually. The infamous Boat Party took place in December of 2006, and the editor and main writer at that time was Gabrielle Kedavra. Gaby was a known Death Eater at the time, but let's not dwell on that. There was a rather messy fight in which the Order of the Phoenix crushed the Death Eaters' attempt to get a little action. As the Order stood victorious, the Death Eaters crawled off to lick their wounds and the Golden Age of Light vs. Dark came to an end.
Michael Hardt
The Boat Party was a turning point for both characters and the site. There are some people who separate the History of Magikal into Before the Boat Party and After the Boat Party. Michael is one of those people. This red-headed Slytherin Alumnus fought for the Death Eaters with all his might, even going so far as to Crucio his own girlfriend, an Order member and the owner of the Bloody Mary, Druscilla Grace. He was captured, but fled the scene only to turn himself in and plead repentance. He has walked the not-so-straight and narrow ever since, keeping his criminal record spotless, although his personal life has been splashed across the pages of the Daily Prophet since summer 2008, when he met his future partner, Alasdair "Dare" Blackwood. Michael not only abandoned the Death Eaters, but heterosexuality to become a hyphenated, boring sweetheart. Dare and Michael Blackwood-Hardt became one of the most infamous couples in Magikal's history when Headmistress Hells Dumbledore allowed them to have a Civil Partnership Ceremony on school grounds nearly one year ago.
Emilian Sota
As if Michael didn't cause enough drama on his own, an old friend of his by the name of Emilian made his first appearance in the Daily Prophet in March of 2008, incidentally the same issue in which Chase Firebrand first appeared. But we'll tackle him later. Emilian's short time at the school involved enough conquests to make Ryan Magby jealous. It also involved the heavy accusation of rape. After an epic duel with Chase that left both scarred, Emilian was expelled from Hogwarts. He made his home in Hogsmeade and enticed the Head Girl, sweet and charming Adara Snow, to be his lover. Somehow she tamed the wild beast and the two are now engaged, though yours truly seriously doubts that there will ever be a wedding.
Chase Julien Sutcliffe Firebrand
Our new Deputy Headmaster deserves an award for the sheer volume of gossip he provided the Daily Prophet as a student. He was first touted as a Slytherin Bad-Boy, struggling for female attention with Gryffindor Emilian Sota. (How Emilian got into Gryffindor we will never know.) Little time passed, however, before Ravenclaw Druscilla Grace caught him, and the next year was ups and downs during which he tried to avenge Savannah Brooks her rape by Emilian, cheated on Dru with fellow Slytherin Lucretia "Storm" Seyrrou, and somehow came out of it all with a clean nose and the position of Head Boy. That, my darlings, is talent. Bravo, Chase. After a string of flings, an engagement to heiress Carolynn Singh, and a rumored reunion with Dru, his graduation from Hogwarts was met with instant hiring as Deputy Headmaster and Slytherin Head of House. Will the power go to his head? Will he favor his House or continue to dock them points for minor infractions as he did when he was Head Boy? Do we really care when he's that deliciously gorgeous?
Masquerade
The Masquerade Ball in summer 2008 was another milestone for Hogwarts and Magikal. With everyone in costume, true personalities came out and people did things they never would have dared had there been the risk of being recognized. There were fabulous costumes, and people switching lovers right and left. Michael Hardt's then-girlfriend Annabelle Hennessy found herself in the arms of Chase Firebrand, who was then not dating Druscilla Grace (though rumor has it that the two met later in the gardens). Of course, Michael found himself in the arms of Dare Blackwood that night. Ryan Magby saw multiple girls as well, and of course there was the mysterious lady in blue with her pirate. There was also a rumor that Emilian Sota, who had been expelled by that time, had made his way into the masquerade, but we have yet to confirm that rumor as all in attendance were well disguised.
Annabelle Hennessy
This mousy Ravenclaw gets little attention on her own, but has been involved in so many scandals that she deserves recognition. Anna dated Michael Hardt (after Dru dumped him) and Chase Firebrand (after Dru dumped him), and it was also rumored that she had her sights set on Dare's brother Silver Blackwood (after Dru dumped him). Her romantic escapades don't end there, however. Sources say that after Michael dumped her for a boy, she sought revenge with a girl, Michael's friend (and Chase's ex-lover), Lucretia Seyrrou. She also sought comfort with Dare's former best friend, Hufflepuff Markise Sterling (who also left her for a boy). The poor dear has had no luck, and after a couple years of being shuffled around, left Hogwarts to find herself. Or to have her baby, depending on which rumor you prefer. An anonymous source says that Annabelle may have been pregnant with Markise's child.
That brings us to five years, readers. Five gloriously dramatic years full of tears, joy, scandal, romance, and of course, magic. What does our fifth year bring? With the recent changes, it may mark another milestone to be remembered as Before Magikal's Fifth and After Magikal's Fifth. The scarcely-seen Headmistress Chloe has departed, leaving Headmistress Hells Dumbledore in her stead, a woman who chose a philandering rogue as her right-hand man. There have been staff changes, new prefects, and so many other little alterations that one could spend a week exploring and not find them all. The Summer Festival promises to be another memorable occasion and with rumors of a Wishing Well, we could see relationships changing across the site. We at the Daily Prophet can't wait to report on every one.
Forever Fabulous,
