Ani loved the smell of the Owlery. The musty warm smell of the feathers, the slight heat from the birds themselves. She loved that when she walked it was almost like walking on air with so many feathers on the floor. She loved looking out one of the huge windows and seeing the entire grounds spread before her. the warm comfort of the soft hoots around her, like a rumble of voices in the distance. She especially loved the feeling of closeness she felt to her father when she finally sent him a letter.
Leaving home to come to Hogwarts was particularly hard for her father. Her mother left them when Ani was very young, too little to remember what she looked like. But it had affected her father greatly. He no longer expected anything out of women, didn't even date. Often he said Ani was the most important thing in his life. Ani believed him.
She took after her mother in a lot of ways though. Her long blonde hair and green eyes were exactly like her mothers. Her honesty and extroverted nature was also inherited from her mother. But her body shape, logical mindset, and stubborn loyalty came from her father.
The owl perched on her finger, hooted impatiently. It pecked her finger lightly, not drawing blood. She ran a finger under its beak and down its white speckled chest. She sighed, not willing to move, enjoying the freedom she had here.

Lily didn't know why, but for some strange reason today she couldn't focus on her school work and be attentive like she usually was. Maybe it was because at her old school kids couldn't fly on broomsticks or have cauldrons dangling at their flanks. Oh how Lily missed her old friends, here no one even recognized her and treated her like the air in front of them. So, she simply draped a curtain of raven black hair in front of her face and kept parading on routinely as if nothing was wrong.
There was nothing wrong, for her mom and dad were muggles and didn't know anything about wizardry, Lily on the other hand found it fascinating beyond anything she could dream of. She remembered crawling under the covers at midnight looking at spells and making up nonsense; and secretly she wished the foolish made up spells would work. And somehow, after wishing for so long her dream had come true.
And now, she walked around the castle feeling as low as ever. She still had no friends, even though the headmaster and teachers related close to her family at home she couldn't help but feel lonely. She climbed the stairs of the Owlery, sat in an open window and started flipping through her books. If this was how the year was going to go she didn't like it very well.

Ani heard some one come up the stairs. She was a little sad her peace with the owls would be disturbed but she'd already spent enough time up here. Her fingers were growing cold anyway.
She attached the letter to the owl with twine and padded to a window. She could hear who ever it was who came up the stairs cross to a different window and sit down on the edge. There was a ruffling of papers.
She turned around curiosity finally winning over ignorant bliss. A girl, probably one year younger then Ani was sitting at the ledge with a book in her hand. The girl had raven black hair that covered her face and dark skin. She wore Gryffindor robes and a sad expression. Ani wasn't quite sure what to think.
"You know, you should go to your common room." She said avoiding the new arrival. She preffered to watch the owls swoop around instead. "Your fingers are bound the freeze."

"Don't tell me what to do, you aren't my mother. I wasn't even bothering you. I was just looking at the scenery." Lily hoped that this other girl in the Owlery wouldn't know that she wasn't slightly lying. "But thank you, I appreciate you're looking out for the wellfare of my fingers."
She watched an owl as it flew over her head and thought of her little brother James, who loved owls and their freaky nature of turning their heads around 360 degrees. She eyed the girl again. She looked displeased.
She whipped out a piece of parchment and began to write to her family. "Dear mum and dad..."

Ani felt anger pump through her veins. This little pissy girl had no right to speak to her like that. Ani was an upper classmen, she was older then the girl, she was here first. And all she'd been trying to do is keep the girl from getting hurt and trying to make light conversation.
She whipped around and snatched the paper from the girls hand, growling, "Look here, you nasty shriveled trash-eating monkey smelling Gryffindor. I didn't mommy you." She glanced at the paper. "But look who's the mommy's girl. Awwww. Poow widdle thing. Miss youw mommy?"

Lily snatched the paper back with a smile. "I don't want any trouble." It seemed like this girl was used to getting her way. "Oh, you're a hufflepuff are you now? Aren't hufflepuffs a bunch of puggy little leftovers the sorting hat doesn't know what to do with after he sorts the better students of Hogwarts?"
The girl's face morphed into an ugly frustration. But Lily didn't care; if she wanted to be told what to do she'd still be in class; wouldn't she? She continued writing her letter as if that girl hadn't previously said such rude remarks: "Right now I'm bonding with our school's pets. They're very...beaky, to say the least. Tell James I miss him terribly and I was sorry to leave him." She wiped her eyes casually so the hufflepuff couldn't tell she was tearing up. She closed her book and hopped off the ledge. "Like I said, I don't want trouble."

Ani glared at the girl. She didn't like her. Didn't like the way she talked, didn't like the way she assumed that Hufflepuff was less then Gryffindor. She didn't like the black hair that hid the girl's face, didn't like the way she wasn't easily riled. But Ani was going to change that.
She knew she could make this girl cry, destroy her past the point of depression. She could make this girl kill herself tonight. Already Ani had figured out she was upset, that she didn't really like the owls, that she was defensive and angry. Ani could manipulate that.
"Like I said, I don't want any trouble." The girl was leaving, having finished her letter.
"Don't want trouble?" Ani asked in a false sweet voice. "Don't want trouble? Silly Gryffindor, thinking you can run the place. Don't you know Hufflepuff always wins?"
Ani began to push the girl back, back away from the door, back to the window.
"Hufflepuff isn't the left overs. We're the best. We're more clever then Ravenclaw, thats why we hang back at the fights waiting until the oppurnit moment to attack. Thats why we hide it. "We're sneakier then Slytherin. Thats why no one has once discovered our secret room. And they never will. "And we're braver then you. Because we put up with your bullying. Ever. Single. Day."

Lily could not easily be intimidated by this blond girl's attempts to scare her. She wrinkled her nose. The girl smelled weird in a sick, sweet way. Her exterior was nice and an easy disguise and she was already ready to cave, but she wasn't going to back down now.
"What makes you think we bully you? I wasn't bothering you anyway. I don't mind that my fingers get cold. They get cold back where I'm from. Now take your snootish ways and go drown yourself in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom or something. Its a better use of your time then trying to make me keel over with that breath of yours."
Before the hufflepuff could do any damage to her, Lily groped for an exit. Her first try at getting a new friend and so far she was getting an enemy.

Ani wouldn't let the girl inch past her though she tried hard. This little punk wasn't going to get away with this crap. Ani was a better person then she was.
"Really?" Ani's voice was lowering, becoming deeper. She could see the fear in this girls eyes. "I recall many times in my life where I have been bullied. And in all my friends. And in the younger students. You Gryffindors think you're better because you had the great Harry Potter. You're wrong. "I was trying to help. You had this air of stupidity around you that made me think that you wouldn't be able to tell when frostbite set in. And then you flipped out on me. "Watch your back little girl. Cause one day, I'll be there and you'll never be happy again."
Ani turned and left the girl, praying she would follow her. Ani would be able to think better where she was warmer and she didn't want to disturb the owls. They had nothing to do with the fight Ani was going to start.

Lily bit her lip. Harry wasn't all that great; she thought. But she wasn't going to say anything to that rude girl, or did she want to mess with her. What did bullies have to do with Lily and why was it a parallel? But, if she wanted to end this...feud this hufflepuff was carrying on about she'd have to fight. So, mindlessly she followed her out of the owlery and out to the corridors.
She shuttered. Expulsion from the school of her dreams was not in her repudiator.
