Brindle could feel the heat of a blush stealing across her cheeks at Ryan's words. Had he really said that? She caught herself looking at him wide-eyed and blinked, dragging her gaze away. God, she was acting like such a girl! And yet she couldn't stop herself from glancing back at him, and couldn't stop herself from smiling a little, too. "I'm not that impressive," she claimed.

Ryan smiled "Yes you are. You are fun to talk with, you are a very cool girl, and you are very beautiful. I would say that is impressive."

Brindle couldn't help laughing. Maybe part of it was nerves, but mostly it was because she'd never heard it before. Strange as it might sound, her brother was the pretty one. She'd always been one of the guys. "I bet girls fall at your feet," she teased lightly. She could see it, too. He smiled so easily!

Ryan shook his head "Nope not really, although if you believe what the prophet says then I have been with like 50 girls... No, I have had 3 girlfriends in my life. I mostly keep to myself if I am single."

Three girlfriends still sounded pretty impressive to Brindle, but then, she thought that was probably because she'd never even been kissed. But she wasn't going to say that. She blushed again just at thinking it, though she pretended firmly that she wasn't blushing at all. "I'm not allowed to read the Prophet anyway," she said instead. "Dare and Michael got all pissed—sorry—upset because the Prophet outed them, so we all pretty much boycott it. I have to wait until everyone else knows to hear about things. Not that I hear things about you. I mean..." She looked at him almost helplessly. "I just can't shut up!" she said, almost laughing again at the ridiculousness of it.

Ryan rubbed her shoulder "It's ok, I work for the Prophet, so I know everything that is being said about me there and around here to, it doesn't bother me any. And don't think I didn't see that blush" he said with a smile and a wink.

Brindle giggled. And when she caught herself, her hand left her hair to smother the laughter that followed. He'd winked at her! And he saw her blushing. And he was touching her. Your shoulder, she told herself, trying to stop laughing, though she couldn't stop the gleam in her eyes.
"I don't blush," she claimed, attempting to keep a straight face. It was an obvious lie, because she was doing it again.

Ryan laughed "Then what is that redness in your cheeks right now?" he asked as he watched her. She was a very beautiful girl and it was a shame that she didn't really realize that.

"Um..." Brindle tried to think fast. "A sunburn?" she asked, then laughed again. Even if the sun was out, they'd be shaded by the tree they were sitting under. He'd never believe her, and she knew it, but it was fun to play.

Ryan laughed "Nice try. Why are you so nervous around me? I'm nothing special."

"And I'm nothing impressive," Brindle replied, still smiling broadly.

Ryan smiled and ran his hand across her cheek and looked at her "Yes you are Brindle."

There was no denying the blush staining her cheeks now. Brindle had stopped laughing, but she still felt a little breathless from it, or from him touching her like that. "Keep saying that and I'll start to believe it," she said softly. She felt like her heart was about to beat out of her chest just from the look in his eyes.

Ryan smiled and looked into her eyes "It is a shame that you don't believe it right now. You are very fun to talk to, and you are extremely beautiful. You are a very special girl Brindle."

Brindle didn't brush the compliment off this time. "Thank you," she managed. Somehow she felt beautiful right now, in her plain old jeans and t-shirt. She couldn't pull her eyes away from his, and she started thinking, what if he kissed her? It was silly, she'd thought about it before, and her sweet sixteen had come and gone, but what if?
