Josie headed out to the lake. It was the middle of the day and while most people were in classes she had a free period. The sun was beating down on the lake, making it glisten. A cool, refreshing breeze swept across her face. Josie slipped her choose off and dipped her toes in the cool water. It felt so nice to be outside alone. The quiet was soothing, the hum of bugs was somewhat relaxing. She tilted her head back and let the sun touch her pale skin. Her golden blond hair was down and fell down her back in waves. A smile spread across her face, this felt good.

Markise's mind was in his shop, a common place for it lately, sifting through fabrics and sketches of designs, taking stock and trying to decide where to go next. He should have a fall line on the racks, but nothing had inspired him. The walk was helping to clear his mind, but gave him no answers, and so he was deep in thought until the moment he realized where he was.
The lake had been a distraction since the first time he'd sat beside it, a year ago now. So it was natural for his eyes to skate across the glittering water even as he walked, his thoughts returning slowly from an entirely different subject.
Then he saw the girl sitting at the edge of the water, all soft golds and unknowing beauty. He looked at her, thinking, and his mind turned to those fall clothes he hadn't yet begun, turned to his sketches and made mental changes. As he made those changes, he was unaware of the path of his gaze and the way his eyes traveled over her, picturing her in this dress or that skirt...

The wind rustled the leaves and the soft grass brushed against her bare feet. A rock about the size of an egg bumped against her back. She reached behind her and picked it up. Just as she straightened herself out her eyes caught a glimpse of another person. She whipped her head around. He was staring right at her. She narrowed her eyes. Who did this creep think he was. She stood up and brushed the grass off of her. Josie marched over to him. She folded her arms over her chest. "Excuse me. What do you think you're doing spying on me?" She demanded.

Markise's eyes widened at the sudden confrontation, and thoughts of clothes dropped. After that moment of shock, his pride kicked in, and pale gold brows drew together as he looked at the girl. Despite the fact that she obviously didn't like it. "I wasn't spying on you," he said. "I was walking by the lake and I saw you." It so wasn't against the law to look at someone as you passed by them. He was suddenly losing interest in using a particular shade of gold for his work.

Josie raised an eyebrow. She could have sworn saw the look he had in his eyes. She couldn't quite place where she had seen the look before, but it hit a nerve. Her face started to turn pink with what--anger? Frustration? Humiliation? She opened her mouth to bite back, but instead her shoulders relaxed and a grin spread across her face. Why should she bother starting such a pointless fight? "Of course, I couldn't blame you. Who wouldn't want to stare?" She said half-joking.

Markise blinked at the sudden change in the girl's attitude. He might have been thrown completely off if he didn't have a sister who could change just as quickly. He might have held onto his pride anyway, but he was a natural flirt, and though he didn't jump in head first, he couldn't resist just a little. "Can't think of a soul," he claimed.
