Not much of a response, but no less than Markise expected, so he didn't pay much thought to it. His mind remained on Anna. "We gotta be careful around her," he added softly. "She knows about me." He paused to think about how he could explain why that wasn't good, even though his friends in New York knowing was fine. "She thinks she understands, but I always hid stuff from her. She only knows 'cause she caught me coming in after clubbing one time. I mean, she's nice, but she just can't let things go..." He didn't know if he was making any sense. And what if Ariel thought having a couple friends who knew was fine?

Ariel didn't think having a couple of friends that knew was fine. New York was different, that had been an experiment just to feel it out. Michael and Dare were different, they were gay, too. He nodded, "Think it'll just be easier to stay away from her together?" he asked. He didn't want to chance something happening, and if they just stayed apart when she was around.

Markise frowned, but he forced a nod. It would be so much easier to not let her see them together. She'd figure it out, he was sure of it. And that was without knowing that Anna had seen them through the crowd that night at the club. If she'd owled Dare and Michael then, why wouldn't she now? Dare. Markise blinked and glanced up at Ariel. "You didn't follow me earlier," he observed. He didn't ask, but the questions were in his eyes. Did you talk to Dare? Did he corner you?

Ariel nodded, but didn't speak until he looked down at Markise and realized he was supposed to explain at least a little. "Yeah, Dare asked what I did to you, how I got you to stop...basically if I screw up, I'm going to have three muggles, a wizard, and most likely a witch, if your sister gets in on it, on my ass." He thought he had been bad that night he had gotten mugged, but he had the feeling it would be even worse if he did something bad to Markise again.

Markise's lips curved softly, and his hand rose to sweep Ariel's hair lightly back. "You won't screw up," he said. He refused to believe it, no matter that some tiny part of him was still afraid that Ariel might wander off to earn some quick money. He wasn't afraid of Ariel relapsing into drugs nearly as much. If that happened he'd stay, no question, and help.

Ariel didn't know how sure he could be about that, not when he still thought he would do something. It was still very tempting to take a quick detour down just the right alley or street and spend the little bit of money he still had leftover from the summer. "I'm trying," he said, that was all he knew. That was all he could focus on right now.

The tension in Ariel was a dead giveaway of his thoughts, and Markise didn't want him brooding himself into misery. They had little enough time together that they should be having fun! Markise let his fingers slide down, then slip beneath the edge of Ariel's shirt to tease against the skin there. "That works for me," he said softly. He brought his lips to the edge of Ariel's jaw, hoping he could soothe something from the latest turn of the conversation.

Ariel wasn't going to start brooding, but it was impossible not to think about drugs. It was hard to keep that want from his mind, and the smallest reminder would send him back to long weekends. He was glad to attempt to push it away those thoughts that weren't as disturbing as they should be. He slid his hand over Markise's side. "As long as it's good for you."

Markise's lips curved again. "It's always good for me," he teased softly. It was good, more than he felt safe telling Ariel, though he could admit some of it to himself.
