Kelly observed how each student seemed from the moment they stepped through the doors and into her classroom. She mentally labeled the bad kids from the good ones and her neutral face almost seemed unwelcoming to the new batch of pupils. It was the sparkle in her eye that gave away how excited she was to be teaching again.
"Welcome students," She said with her thick British accent, "Welcome to Astronomy." She looked around the room, the ceiling was glass and so the sky above could be seen perfectly. Along the side of the room, microscopes were neatly organized into a lab station. Kelly walked to the middle of the room.
"Astronomy is the study of the stars therefore that's what we'll be doing. If anyone of you are in the wrong class then get out now. This pertains to those who seem to think Astronomy is a blow off class, an easy O, or boring. If you rank yourself among those categories then my class will not be for you." She watched as some students shifted in their seats, yet no one left. That pleased her greatly.
"As you can see, there are microscopes out and about. Unless otherwise instructed, these are not there to be toys. You will use them for different labs that will be explained at a later date. For now, it would be preferred if you do not touch them whatsoever."
"Also, this class will go beyond the memorization of constellations. You will acquire the knowledge of knowing each story as it relates to the constellation. Those also taking Mythology will find this to be somewhat similar. Think of this as the epilogue of that class then."
"On another note, I do not give out much homework. I understand you have a lot to do so I narrowed it down to one assignment. At the beginning of each week, I would like you to go outside in the evening and look at the stars and write about it. In these observations I want a clear idea that you did in fact go outside. A summary simply on a constellation will not cut it. I want to hear theories of how they came to be, what story they are, and so on. Your first observation will be due next class. "
"Finally, my name is Professor Watts and I have been teaching Astronomy for a number of years and before then I studied in the most prestigious schools. I understand that sometimes glimmers of light far far away may not be interested, but if you open your mind to it, it just might be."
"Now, ask me questions." Kelly scanned across the room. After a moment she went on, seeing as their were none at the moment.
"So, today I am actually going to give you a pretest to test your knowledge. Please take out some parchment and number from one to fifteen. Once you do that, without talking write down fifteen constellations and flip it over when you are done."
A good ten minutes later, all papers were on the downside. Kelly collected each one as she walked up and down the aisles of seats.
"This will not count as an actually text grade, but it will for participation. For those that took it seriously, you will find yourself beginning the term with a good start. Others, I can't say the same about."
Kelly put the stack of pretests on her desk and turned back around to face the class, "One last thing. ReWizard, observations of the stars will be due next class. These need to be thought out and good. It is the first assignment so I will be the harshest on it. It will determine how well you will do in the future of my class." She let her eyes fall onto each person as she said that. The students better know to take this seriously.
Looking up at the clock, Kelly saw that they had roughly five more minutes, "Last time, any questions?" she asked the class.
AN: For the assignment, RP somewhere watching the stars then PM me with the observations.
