Dru shifted uncomfortably. What was the point of trying to be with him now if nothing could ever come from it? She closed her eyes. That was a dangerous thought, a very dangerous thought, and she needed to force it away unless she wanted another messy end. She took a deep breath and let it out in a long, low sigh.

Chase didn't like that look on Dru's face, and he paused, trying to think back to what he'd said. I was raised to do it, I'll do it. When his mind made the connection, he thought that perhaps he hadn't needed to stress exactly how much he needed to do it. He shifted toward Dru, sparing one brief look around before bringing his hands up to her waist. "That doesn't mean there's not something here," he said, though he wouldn't even begin to examine what that might be. He was tempted though, so tempted by an idea forming in his eyes, and it shone in sparks among the red-brown.

Dru's heart skipped a beat at that before she even looked up to see Chase's eyes. It meant a lot to hear that. But at the same time, did it mean anything if he was just going to end up married to someone else? Her eyes started to burn slightly and she dropped them, uncrossing her arms to put her hands lightly against his chest. "What kind of something? she asked finally. What was it in his mind? What was she to him? Did she even want to know?

Chase's arms slid farther around Dru as he looked away again, trying to think. "I don't know," he said softly, "but I can feel it." He wanted to ask if she felt it too, but that was too much when they were so close to so many dangerous things. He began to wonder how far he could push his father in regards to the engagement and still keep on his good side. He wondered how far he would have to push Carolynn to break it off.

Dru closed her eyes and slid her arms up around Chase's neck, then rested her head against his shoulder. "Me, too," she whispered. She didn't want to, it would hurt too badly when he had to go off with her. But at the same time she wanted so desperately to feel it with Chase. She didn't know which one to go with. So she closed her eyes tightly and held on.

Chase didn't try to fill the silence. He held Dru close, looking and listening for anyone who might see them and almost hoping they would. If he was caught with Dru, maybe the engagement would be broken. Or maybe he'd be disowned and everything he'd been holding onto his entire life would be taken away.

"What happens when you marry her?" Dru finally asked, her voice little more than a breath. She was afraid to even think about it, but it felt like something she needed to know. Would she just be thrown to the side? With all of this, she couldn't think that Chase would do something like that of his own free will, but what if he didn't have a choice?

"I'll get you a nice house somewhere," Chase said, knowing it was the wrong thing to say. But he couldn't lie to her. The only times he'd ever lied were when she could see his eyes, when he knew she could see, but he couldn't make himself say the words. His arms tightened around Dru. "She won't miss me when I'm gone." One son, maybe two, and their responsibility to one another could be accomplished at Society functions and visits.

Dru squeezed her eyes closed and tightened her arms. She had no idea how she could live like that, but now that she had him, now that they were working, she couldn't imagine letting him go even because of something like that. "I will," she said. She would miss him desperately, and it would only be worse knowing that she was the other woman and that he was with his wife.

Chase's arms tightened further, and now he closed his eyes, now he buried his nose against her hair to breathe her in. He wasn't worth it and he wanted to tell her that, but he was too selfish. He didn't understand any of this, but he'd been addicted to her for so long now that it didn't matter. Whatever barrier had been between them had disappeared, and he was afraid to examine it too closely in case it came back."I'll make this worth it," he promised. I'll try to keep you happy.

Dru sighed heavily and turned her face into his neck. There were a few long minutes where she couldn't say anything before she took a breath and picked up her head. She pulled an arm down to move her fingers over his collar and down his chest. "You look really nice," she said, finally looking up to his eyes and attempting a small smile.

Chase gave Dru a low thank you, but he couldn't have cared less about those clothes. He wanted to symbolically burn them, then get in one of those Muggle flying things and scatter them to the wind. Or maybe he'd rather do that to his father. Then he'd have the money, the power, and the ability to do whatever the hell he wanted to the family name.

Dru smiled softly and tilted her head up to steal a short kiss. She refused to let it go too far, knowing where they were. Two years and they were here, where would they be in another two years? It was mind boggling to think of yet she couldn't help it. "So, do I get to choose where my nice house is, or do I have to take what I get?" she asked, a sad attempt at a light joke, but an attempt nonetheless.

Chase looked back at Dru, trying to decide if she was serious or not. "You get to choose," he said. "It's all up to you." And when his father finally died, he could send Dru a house-elf as well. He wished the man would just get it over with, but unfortunately the man was as healthy as he was, if thirty-some years older. He wondered why it was so easy to think about the future now, when before he'd refused to do more than acknowledge he'd give in eventually. Why was it so easy to picture finding every weekend and as many nights as he could spare with Dru?

Dru forced a block between what they were talking about and the true meaning of it all. It made it easier to talk about. "Can I have a canopy bed? And a room just for books?" she asked, bringing her arm back around Chase's neck. One hand snaked up into his hair. At least this was helping her relax just a little after the stress of the short conversation.
