Chase's jaw tightened. He clung to annoyance rather than admit to himself that there was anything else. Or even that there could be anything else. He wanted to turn heel and stalk away. He wanted to stand firm and tell her to go. He wanted... It didn't matter what he wanted. "Are we going to stand here all night?" he asked. It was still uncomfortable, walls or not.

"I heard you were engaged," Dru said, her eyes moving up again to look at him. It felt like she was buying time before she could build up courage. Courage to do what? Certainly not any of the things her body was reminding her of, certainly none of the things her mind remembered so very vividly. She realized the news of Chase and...whoever the woman had been was old news, but at least it was something to say.

Chase's eyes darted away, his walls slipping for one moment where his chest constricted. One momentary stab of pain, hardly noticeable, and he pushed it away, forcing himself to remain cool, even as his eyes flashed crimson.
"I am," he said. He didn't want to talk about this. "My dad won." If she didn't know what he meant, he didn't care. It was really none of her business anyway. Halfblood, he reminded himself, refusing to acknowledge any hurt he felt at thinking it. His little Muggle obsession was dead. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Dru looked up at Chase again and her own chest tightened. "You didn't want it?" she asked, then dropped her eyes, "I'm sorry." It was only after the apology for prying left her lips that she realized that wasn't all she was apologizing for. She was sorry that he hadn't been able to get away from his father, from duty, she was sorry...for things much further in the past.

Chase shook his head, refusing to accept her apology, and especially to see any other layers to it than just sorry you're tied down. "I went home at winter break, told him I give up," he said. It wasn't a confession and he didn't want her pity, didn't want anything from her. "It was my decision." After months of hating the world, hating himself, and more than a few nights with his wand at his throat debating.

"I thought you were with Anna," Dru said, her eyebrows coming together as her eyes returned to Chase. At least, the last she heard before the engagement was that he and Anna were....together, in a sense of the word. Why did she even care? She didn't want him back! She had made the right decision in the first place to get away from him! So why wasn't she walking away?

"I wasn't," Chase said simply. His eyes turned firmly away from her. There had been things between them, but they'd never gone anywhere and he hadn't wanted them to. He'd pushed her away from the start. Chase looked back at Dru, his eyes awash with crimson and scarlet. I wasn't with anyone after you. Not til the engagement. She'd never believe it. Which didn't matter, since he saw no reason to tell her.

Dru caught his eyes and her lips parted slightly. His eyes had always given so much away, but she couldn't read exactly what was there, just that there was something. She had taken a couple of steps forward before she really realized she was moving. "What is it?" she asked, searching his face. It was silly to even ask, he hadn't talked about what he was feeling before, why would he now?

Chase blinked, the sudden realization—or perhaps memory—that she could read his eyes knocking his walls down in an instant. There was a moment of near panic, a moment where all his practice not caring meant precisely nothing, before he caught himself. He straightened slightly, and his eyes flickered with the threat of a blaze. "What is what?" he asked. Whatever she'd seen, he'd deny it all.

Dru searched his eyes for a moment more before dropping her own to look at the floor. "Nothing you'll tell me about, I'm sure," she said softly, a hint of bitterness covering the words. She wished he would tell her, she would gladly listen, would give advice that he wouldn't take. But she knew better than to expect him to tell her anything.

Chase's eyes narrowed. "I'm not into getting lectured for my sins," he countered. Any time he had told her something, she'd misinterpreted it as badly as she could. She'd demanded more even when he'd given everything he could give. No, he wouldn't tell her. He wouldn't tell her anything, and hopefully he wouldn't have to hear what a heartless ass~ he was.

Dru looked back up at him, her eyebrows tightly knit, "I was not going to lecture you," she said. "I did a rather bad job of talking to you before, yes, but that was almost a year ago." She had had a lot of time to think since then, especially since her and Silver had fallen through. She really needed to work on her social skills.

You were already starting in, Chase wanted to point out. It showed in his eyes, but he didn't say the words. He'd had more than enough fighting in the past two years to last him the next decade. He even had the scars to prove it. "Just keep your thoughts to yourself and we'll both be better off." He didn't want to acknowledge a thing she said. She was talking about the past, and he didn't want anything to do with it. He blinked and looked down the corridor, trying to close himself off properly. "You should be in your dorm," he said. They'd already talked that to death, but it didn't have anything to do with them. If there ever really had been a them.

Dru took a breath and looked off into the hall. She couldn't make herself move to leave. "I should," she agreed, "But...then I ran into you." It's not the first time I've been with you instead of in my dorm. Oh she really needed a boyfriend. She closed her eyes briefly and then looked up at him again.

Chase's jaw tightened, and he forced his gaze away. "I've docked your points, you're free to go," he said, as though he had no idea what she meant by that. He wouldn't allow himself to think about it, even as insistent as the memories were trying to be. He shut them down before they had a chance to affect him.
