Michael sighed heavily and then slumped in the chair, feeling defeated. "I don't know." The only thing he could think of was that what they had talked about before had been in the past and the weight and potions had been current, even caused by each other. His eyebrows came together and he tried to think that through.

Kane was silent, letting Michael have the time he needed to think. He gave it a few minutes, at least, then said, "It looks like you're on to something. What are you thinking? Even if it's just a thought?"

"The only differences I can think of are that the potions and...this morning are recent things. And..." Michael's voice wavered wen he tried to continue, so he paused and waited a moment before trying again. "The potions...He started taking the sleeping potion because I told him to do it, but only for one night! I never meant for him to continue." And then Michael had begun to lose weight when the fight had happened, over Dare's potions.

"You're not responsible for the actions of other people. Could Dare have refused at any time?" Kane only paused for a moment before going on. "Have you talked with him about why he kept taking the potions? More recently, since you've been talking again?"

"I know why he kept taking them," Michael said. And it wasn't his place to tell Kane about Dare's nightmares. "But we haven't talked about it since...we got better. We talked about it some before, but..." They hadn't gotten very far. "Besides, I don't know what to ask, and the reason is gone now."

Kane took his time working Michael down from the stressful place he'd found himself in before renewing a suggestion he'd mentioned earlier. "I could help you find the questions if you'd be willing to speak with Dare here. And impartial party can keep moods from escalating, and if you're both willing, a lot can be cleared up."

"But he would even just barely talk to me about...why he kept taking the potions," Michael argued, though his protest wasn't nearly as passionate as it had been before. It would be so much harder for Dare to talk to Kane about it, Michael knew it would be. "Even if we weren't talking about that specifically, it'd be hard to talk." They had to convince each other to talk as it was.

"It'll be hard either way, and it'll be harder if it builds up. Today, the most important thing was to find out why you've been losing weight, and we most likely did. If you both come in with the intention of talking to each other, then that's what we'll work on," Kane said.

Michael gave a resigned nod. It didn't seem like there was any way to get out of doing it, and it would help them both, anyway. But it also meant he had to tell Dare that there were things bothering him from the beginning of the year that he hadn't brought up to talk about. Did he even know really what was bothering him? "I'll talk to him about it."

"If you want, I can send him an owl before then and request to see him. I wouldn't tell him anything we've discussed here, it's all completely confidential unless you give me permission to mention something. It depends on how you think he'd respond better."

Michael considered, but he really wasn't sure which one would do better. "I...I asked him to come see you at the beginning of the year, but at the time he was still on his potions..." So maybe he would be more likely to come now? If Kane sent an owl...maybe Dare would get a message that Michael needed him to go? He wondered if getting a message from Kane would encourage him or just push him further away from going. Though...if he did get the owl and brought it up... "I think...an owl might be a good idea..." He was obviously unsure, but he couldn't see either way working well.

Kane nodded. "I can do a couple different ways. I can send an owl just asking him to meet me in the interests of getting to know one another and introduce the idea of you both coming then, or I can mention wanting to meet both of you and ask him if he'd like a preliminary visit. Either way is nonconfrontational, and neither makes it your idea, so it's not a declaration that there's a problem, but an extension of further contact."

Michael nodded as Kane spoke, though he still wasn't sure which would work best. "Maybe...I mean, I was hoping to give you an invitation to the ceremony this summer." He hadn't realized how pathetic the idea sounded until saying it out loud. Did they really have so few friends between the two of them that he was inviting his counselor[/i[? Yes. "Maybe he would want to actually meet you, instead of what happened today."

"That sounds fine," Kane said. He got everything he needed to get the owl sent, made sure that Michael was feeling at least marginally better after everything they'd talked about, then said goodbye. When Michael had left, he turned his attention to contacting a certain Defense professor and a certain Potions master about a student needing time for an unavoidable extracurricular activity.
