Vane's eyes had begun to wander, but they returned to Connor now, one brow rising behind his hair. "Since when have you been into dancing?" he asked. The last he knew, Connor was one of the rare few holding up the walls at any kind of social function. Why in hell would Connor voluntarily bring a girl to a club, even one he'd been near panting over. Only girls were truly into the tease that was dancing, moving enough to drive every male in the vicinity crazy without any expectation of satisfaction.

"I thought it'd be worth a try..." Connor said. He didn't look up at Vane but stared at the stones of the floor. "Only if there's nothing else to do," he added. It didn't seem worth it now, but he had thought...that maybe it would be something to get him more comfortable with her. True, he was the one that stayed off to the side with a stack of cards in his pocket for entertainment, but everything was worth a try. Maybe it had just taken this long to pull him up to the other guys his age's level.

"Right," Vane said noncommittally. If Connor wanted advice, Vane was going to wait for him to ask for it. He had no clue what Connor was up to and wasn't going to pump him for information. There were some things that it was reflex to explain to his friend by now, but others didn't even occur to him. He'd learned mostly from trial-by-error, especially after he'd figured out what garbage things said in the Quidditch locker room was.

Connor had never so much as talked to a girl as gorgeous as Melody, much less had a conversation with one, and he had never dreamed he would be going out with one. But knowing Vane's obvious thoughts on the matter made him more self-conscious than he had been even sitting on the steps with her with his ears bright red. The more he thought of it, the more his nerves came back. "I have no idea what I'm supposed to do this weekend," he said.

"What do you mean no idea?" Vane asked. He could see Connor's nerves, and his annoyance came back. He had half a mind to suggest blowing Melody off entirely and getting in some flying practice together instead. Still, he wasn't being purposefully unhelpful by not making an immediate answer. He had no idea what to say and would continue to have no idea as long as Connor didn't ask him a specific question.

Connor sighed heavily through his nose and looked up at Vane. "Come on, Vane, you know I don't do this stuff," he said. "Will you help? I mean...do I pay for her? Can I kiss her at the end?" he was clueless. He had never really bee on a true date before, and the more he thought of it the more it worried him that he didn't know what to do. How could he get her to like him as more than a cool guy if it was obvious he had no idea what he was doing?

Vane's hand speared into his hair, leaving it a ruffled mess when he finally lowered it again. "I'll help," he said, if only because he couldn't so much as begin to make himself ignore Connor's plea. "Assume you'll be paying and do so unless she insists on paying her half. Some girls get pissy about that, but most like it. Do whatever it is you're doing, and if you sit there thinking about kissing her the whole time you won't have any fun. If you have fun, kiss her and don't wait for the end of the night if you don't want to. That good?" he asked.

Connor nodded and made a mental note to go searching for any spare money he had, he wasn't about to get caught out there without anything when he needed it. "So, what about if we go to the club?" He knew he would have to ask her to dance, but he couldn't imagine that he would be some dancing genius and pick it up immediately.

"Dance with her," Vane said. "And I can't teach you how to dance, so don't ask. You're supposed to just move, and you can get that yourself." Vane knew plenty of dances that could be taught, but none of them were for clubs and it wouldn't be worth the effort. Besides, he could almost see Connor getting nervous and reverting to the foxtrot as something safe.

Connor nodded, mentally kicking himself for asking. Really, what could Vane do to help him with that? It wasn't like they could exactly dance or anything to let him practice. He sighed and propped one foot up on the wall. "You still think I need to be careful around her?" he asked, his head dropping slightly. He had been nervous enough without Vane bringing up other possibilities.

"The last ten minutes hasn't changed my mind, Connor." Vane gave his friend a pointed look. "I didn't say you shouldn't have fun, just don't go thinking she's your girlfriend after one date. Any girl who's that fast you don't want." All a clingy girl would do was dominate Connor and his time, leaving Vane alone.

Connor wrinkled his nose and glanced up at Vane. "I didn't plan on thinking she was my girlfriend," he said, "I never really even thought of Holly as one." He had quite enjoyed the majority of their time together, but he had never considered her a girlfriend, not really. "I'm not a complete idiot," he said, though the words were a little bit more of a grumble than anything.

"You can't blame me for saying it," Vane pointed out. "You're the one who asked me if you could kiss her." Vane was continually surprised by how very much went right over Connor's head, so he had to be forgiven if once in a while he underestimated instead.

Connor hung his head again. He was sure that he would be constantly moving between what Vane had said about her and anticipation of what could happen between him and Melody. Scenarios would dominate his mind until the weekend and even while he was with her, only once everything was over with would they stop, probably only to be replaced by more.

Vane watched Connor's retreat, silent for a couple minutes, though he knew Connor wouldn't speak again unless he was forced to. He pushed away from the wall and gave a brief nod down the corridor. "Let's go fly, you need to relax," he suggested. "We'll get our brooms and toss the quaffle around."
