Connor had been actively looking for Vane ever since classes had ended. He couldn't imagine Vane staying in the common room, but he also had no idea where Vane had taken to hanging out at, other than the Quidditch pitch. That was the first place he had gone, and no Vane. He needed to talk to him about what was going on that weekend with Melody!

Vane hadn't been looking for Connor, but he'd wanted to talk to him, so when he saw his friend crossing an adjoining corridor, his footsteps broadened. "Connor!" he barked, just once, but loud enough to get his attention. He was hoping that the sort of date Melody had mentioned wasn't a date, and at this point, it wasn't out of any desire to keep her for himself. If she screwed with Connor, he was going to feel horribly guilty for whatever he had to do to get her back.

Connor stopped, stumbling slightly as he turned toward the voice. "Vane!" he said, catching his balance and taking quick steps toward him. "I've been looking for you," he informed him, eyes bright. He had no doubt that Vane would be able to read that he had exciting news to tell, but he refused to just bust out with it, no matter how much he wanted to.

Vane's first thought was a word not fit for polite company. He could tell just by looking at Connor that the sort of date was definitely more on the other side, and didn't at all look forward to this. "It doesn't have anything to do with a quiet redhead, does it?" he asked. Connor's excitement only made him feel worse, but he wouldn't feel right clapping him on the shoulder and encouraging it. They hadn't been here long enough for it to have gotten that far and disappointment was far easier than heartbreak.

Connor came to a stop in front of Vane and his eyebrows creased. "Yeah....you met Melody?" he asked, the excitement fading from his eyes when he repeated Vane's question in his mind. It hadn't sounded good. He ran a hand through his hair as he watched Vane and waited to find out what had happened to get such a reaction.

"Yeah, and she said she'd met you," Vane answered, diverting his gaze. Just because he was doing it didn't mean he had to increase the torture by making eye contact. "I ran into her in the library, we talked a while." That wasn't the problem, though. Vane took a deep breath and released it, then forced himself to look back at Connor. "She said she wouldn't ride with me because of some bad memory, so I brought up the ice cream parlor and the club in Hogsmeade. She said she had time so I asked her out, and then she brought you up again. Said she sort of had a date with you and she'd have said something sooner but she knew it'd stop the conversation." He'd let Connor come to his own conclusion before he'd start throwing out his thoughts on it all.

Connor rubbed the back of his neck as he thought over what Vane said. Well, they had never technically called it a date, though in his mind that was what he called it. And, though he was a little angry that she hadn't mentioned that she had plans with him sooner, he didn't see why Vane would look so uncomfortable about the whole thing. "She's new...maybe she was just wanting to meet someone new," he said, his voice sounding uncomfortably hopeful.

"Maybe," Vane said, though the tone of his voice said, doubtful. "You realize I'd already more or less asked her out once before I brought up Hogsmeade?" he asked. He let out a sharp breath and glanced down the corridor again, shifting his weight before looking anywhere near Connor. "She's either got no clue that if you don't want to go out with more than one guy you should say so, or she's too busy enjoying the attention to let it go. Either way, I'd be careful. Most guys won't back off for a sort of." He wouldn't have if it hadn't been Connor.

Connor eyed Spencer before dropping his gaze. "We never really even said it was a date," he said. Some part of him said that he would be fine with her hanging out with other guys, but he knew it was a lie, he wanted a chance, first! But maybe...hadn't she mentioned she was home-schooled? Would she even know? "Did she say anything about me before?" he asked, finally bringing his eyes back up to Vane.

The answer to that wasn't much better. Vane met Connor's eyes. "She said you talked in the Great Hall her first day and called you a cool guy," he said, leaving it pointedly at that. That's all she said, I swear it. Not only that, but cool guy was a status to reach for with other guys, not with girls. Vane left that unsaid.

Connor held Vane's stare for a few seconds before he sighed and moved over to lean against the wall. He felt what little that had been left of his excitement die. Why was that always his luck? Yeah, Holly had been pretty and nice, but there had been all that extra stuff. And then he met Melody, who apparently hadn't been nearly as affected as he had been. "I suck at this thing," he mumbled. Normally, a girl calling him a cool guy would have been great, but considering how Vane had said it...

Vane propped himself against the wall next to Connor. "I'm not trying to turn you off girls," he said, looking at his friend. "But they have their own set of rules and if you fall for every one you see, you're either going to be disappointed once a week like a second year or end up like Ransley. And we already agreed that one Ransley's enough."

Connor looked up, indignant. "I do not fall for every girl I see!" he said, though he knew what Vane meant. He pushed at his hair and then shoved his hands in his pockets. "Just because I had a girl at MI and then met Melody here doesn't mean anything." It wasn't like he had a very good track record at their old school. He still intended to go to Diagon Alley with her, but told himself that he couldn't get his hopes up.

Vane made a low, noncommittal sound at Connor's insistence. Connor hadn't used to fall for every girl he saw, but Holly was less than a month ago and he'd seen how excited he was about Melody. Connor hadn't been like that at TAIM, and Vane had always preferred to imagine that maybe Connor just hadn't been looking in the right direction. He didn't want to think about that really, but he felt annoyed all the same. He wasn't about to just let Connor settle. "Go out with her, have some fun, just keep your feet on the ground," he said.

Connor sighed heavily, but nodded. He could already feel the ideas he had had flying away. "I hoped it'd be fun, thought if there wasn't anything to do in Diagon Alley we could come back to the club." He kept his eyes firmly away from Vane. Connor had never danced and he didn't care to see Vane's reaction to the last effort of the night should everything else fail. It was one of the things he had wanted to come ask Vane about in the first place.
