You get to use a lot of deception. That was a reason that Markise had never heard before, and would have expected to hear from a Slytherin rather than a Hufflepuff Prefect. Still, all was fair in love and Quidditch, so he didn't hold it against Ryan. "My sister plays Beater, probably because it's an excuse to hit things." It was more than that and he knew it, but he figured that, in general, that was it.

Ryan nodded "I thought about playing beater. I used to play baseball back in the muggle world, and a beater is just like batting in baseball."

"Baseball," Markise repeated, thinking. He looked up at Ryan. "That's the one where they hit the ball with a stick, right?" Markise had gone to Muggle elementary school, but it had been so long that he wasn't sure he hadn't mixed it all up.

Ryan smiled and nodded "Yes it is. It is still my favorite sport, but quidditch is a close 2nd. I still follow my hometown team when i get the chance."

"How?" Markise asked. "I mean, we're way over here in Europe. Does someone owl you a paper?" He couldn't imagine any owl that could make an ocean crossing, but maybe Ryan got news through the Floo Network. He had no idea. "I've been completely cut off out here."

Ryan smiled and pulled out an old looking paper, on it was: Texas Rangers-3 (23-14) LA Angels-0 (18-18) Ryan looked at Markise and said "I made it a few years ago because I was tired of not knowing how things were going sports wise back home. I have it set for all of my favorite sports teams, and my parents have one so they can tell me things without having to use an owl."

Markise's eyes widened at that, but he tried to keep his near-awe down to an expression of just being impressed. "How'd you make it? Find a good spell in a book somewhere?" It was times like these that Markise realized how pathetic his charms training was.

Ryan shrugged "Wasn't much. I took some muggle technology from a cell phone, and used a charm so that it would still work here at Hogwarts, and transfigured it with the paper. My mom helped with the rest."

For all Markise knew about Muggles, he had no idea what technology or cell phone meant. He knew what a phone was, though—sort of—so he tried to imagine it and hoped he didn't look as clueless as he felt. "That must've taken a while," he said.

Ryan could tell he didn't know much of what was said "Yea kind of. And don't worry, If you aren't from a muggle family it can be very confusing."

"I'm not, but I went to elementary school and everything," Markise said. His parents had both needed to work, and they had a friend whose Squib son was doing it, so they'd sent him along as well. "It's been a while, though." And the last time he'd seen his friends had been a while, too.

Ryan nodded "It's been a while for me too. I kind of miss muggle school, I had a lot of fun."

Markise smiled, but didn't agree. He'd had too hard a time hiding everything, though he didn't wish he hadn't gone. He'd met his friends back home in school. "I think the best thing I learned was Muggle money. None of my friends who were homeschooled can cound it out."
