"We'll have to fix that," Vane said, lips quirking again. "Maybe I'll take you flying," he suggested. "If it doesn't sound like too much, you could come while I catch the Snitch." His part-smile curved into a whole one at that, and his eyes lightened. He'd certainly like to catch the Snitch with her, but he wouldn't jump ahead of himself and assume an answer. "Would you like that?" he asked Melody. "I'll talk you into it if I have to." His eyes glittered.

"Um, I don't know," Melody said, "I don't even think my broom is good enough to fly. It was good for the yard but it's in horrible condition now." She was making excuses but even though her broom was bad, she didn't want to go for another reason. Of course, to find the real reason she didn't want to go flying was in her memory that she was keeping locked away. "I would watch you though," She suggested instead. As long as she wasn't on the broom she was content doing whatever.

Vane paused just a moment, debating. "If you ride with me, I promise to keep you safe," he said. "I've got a new broom in good condition, and I know how to use it. You can't fall, it's impossible if I'm with you." The only times he'd fallen in years had been due to some unexpected flying object, like a bludger or Ransley. Vane's instincts told him that the only reason someone wouldn't fly, or get their broom fixed so they could, would be some distaste for, or fear of, flying.

Melody bit her lip in thought. As much as she'd love to go, she simply didn't want to... she couldn't. "I'm not afraid I'm going to fall," She paused, choosing her words carefully, "It just would bring back some bad memories that I'm not ready to face yet." Then, before he could ask anything about the memories she quickly said, "But I would still be happy just watching, well that is if you don't mind having an audience." She let her lips curve into a small smile at that.

Inwardly, Vane frowned. It was a damned shame she wouldn't ride with him, it was a perfect excuse for innocent contact. Outwardly, he gave an encouraging smile. "I don't mind at all," he said, letting the subject go. Pushing was a waste of time and effort, fun for neither party. He tended not to except under extenuating circumstances.
"Have you been to Hogsmeade?" he asked, shifting the subject to something else they might do. Showing off for Melody would be fun, but Vane was tired of distance. He had Connor and that was all. As close as they were, it wasn't enough. "I hear there's an ice cream parlor and a nightclub." Among other, less intimate places. He wondered which Melody would show an interest in.

Melody felt bad about leading the topic of Quiditch to a sudden stop but she was glad of it too. Then she focused on the question he ad justasked. She could very well say that she might be going soon with Connor if Diagon turned out to be a dud but she feared that would also lead the conversation to a halt. So instead she simply said, "Not yet, but then again, I only just got here so I've got time." She pushed her hair behind her ear just in case it wanted to fall in front of her eyes. While doing so, she asked, "Have you been?"

"Not yet, and I've been wanting to go," he said, his eyes drawn helplessly to the motion of Melody's hair. He had such a weakness for hair. He brought his gaze quickly back to Melody's and paused a moment, as though considering something. "Would you go with me?" he asked. He tossed his head lightly, moving aside blond hair. "What are you doing tonight?" She'd said she had time, after all, and Vane knew he wasn't moving too quickly. "I'll have you back by curfew," he added, smiling almost mischievously.

Melody was caught on the spot and she didn't know what to do. Finally, she said, "Well, here's the thing. I sort of have a date with Connor this weekend..." She trailed off, leaving him to fill in the blanks. As much as she would like to go, she didn't want to seem like she was two timing them. Although, she did realize that the date hadn't been set in stone yet, and Spencer could just mean as a friend...maybe. Melody bit her lower lip in worry that she just made a fool of herself for maybe nothing.

Damn. Vane glanced off into the library to hide the momentary darkening of his eyes. It would have been incredibly helpful if she'd said that in the beginning, when Connor had first come up. Rejection was never easy to deal with, though at least he knew how to hold it in. Only a brief time passed before Vane's lips curved into a genuine-looking smile he didn't quite feel. "It's fine," he lied. "I should be working out my broom, anyway. You're still welcome to come watch some time." Something distant, and if there was something there, Connor could always join him. He needed to talk to Connor.

"I'm sorry I didn't say anything before. I didn't want the conversation to come to a crashing halt...sort of like this." Melody smiled a little in hopes of lightening the mood. She had been enjoying talking to Spencer a lot and didn't want him to leave yet. Just because she had said no, didn't mean they couldn't continue talking. Melody retraced her thoughts and reaized how naive she sounded. She had been in a relationship before, she shouldn't have the mindset of a first year.

"It's fine," Vane repeated. He didn't intend to say it again. It had been hard enough the first time. He nearly renewed his offer for her to come watch him fly, but caught himself. He'd just offered and she'd declared the conversation come to a crashing halt. Vane glanced purposefully down at the leather-banded watch strapped to his right wrist. "Damn, I'm sorry to do this, but I really have to go." He did but more to salvage some pride than anything. "I have a test tomorrow and have to take it, even if I showed up in the middle of the semester. It was nice meeting you though, Melody." Vane didn't launch to his feet, but held out his hand again for a light shake.

Melody reached her hand out for the shake and in doing so said, "Ok, well good luck on the test." As she pulled her hand back to her side she said, "I'll see you around though?" Ok, so it came out as a question, but with her that was normal. Her cheeks turned a light pink much to her dismay as she realized how pathetic she must sound. Was she really that lonely as to want to hang out with someone she had basically rejected? She confirmed in her mind that she wasn't pathetic...Spencer was just really cool.

"That'd be great," Vane said. He gathered up his bag and tucked his book into it, then stood. "I'll see you around," he affirmed with a nod of his head. He turned to head out, and his smile faded the moment his back was turned. He wasn't upset with Melody, but he was annoyed. He'd get over it.

As he left, Melody felt her cheeks turn full out red as she went over their conversation in her head. She seemed to have said all of the right things at the wrong time, or the wrong things at the wrong time, or any other combination of the two that would end up with her making an idiot out of herself. She sighed and rested her forehead on her hand and tried to think of how to make it better. Chances were, with Connor and Spencer being friends, he would have told him everything she had said. Melody got up from her chair, and decided to take a walk.
