"I still have my wizards' chess," he offered. "I'll even let you win." He gave Connor a hopeful smirk that didn't appear at all likely to be seen, then sighed and looked back toward their destination, a castle even larger than TAIM's fortress. "Kwami was slow to showing up last time, too. I'm sure the tribe won't let him hang around MI after the Death Eater scare, even if it was a cauldron of rubbish. I don't know about Ransley, though. He doesn't write unless he's forced to." He could feel Connor's boredom, and he knew that if the four of them got together again, it would be erased. Even so, of the four of them he was glad it was Connor who'd come with him.

Connor nodded but shrugged as well. He was closer to Vane than either of the others, so he could live with it just being the two of them, though it would be much more entertaining to have them all together again. "I didn't even see either of them at MI," he said. "The only one I ever found was you." He looked up at Vane and then back toward the school. "And I can win without you letting me."

Vane grinned at that and ruffled Connor's hair again. "Keep telling yourself that," he teased, then dropped his arm. Connor could win on his own, but that didn't mean Vane had to admit that. He was a better sport when they actually played than when they talked about playing, but they were just talking, so what did it matter?
"I saw all three of you," he said, going back to the guys. "None of you at the same time, though. Met Ransley on the pitch the first day and threw my shoulder out again, saw you in the corridor, then ran into Kwami once in the entrance hall. He was ready to leave in five minutes of getting there."

"Understandable," Connor said as he brought his hands out of his pockets to smooth his hair down again. He had long before given up trying to get Vane to stop ruffling his hair, so he just ignored it now. "The only reason I could stand the place was because of you and Holly." It had just been luck that he had met Holly that first time.

Vane nodded, but didn't comment. If he kept talking about MI, Connor would keep thinking about Holly, and they'd never have any fun. He managed to change the subject, but was rather transparent about it. Still, it made the walk to the dining room less uncomfortable.
