Connor nodded and put his hands in his pockets when he found himself pulling his finger back to his lips. The finger was starting to sting but he didn't care to get called out by Vane again. "Some of the stuff's okay, but most of it's just so weird." He wondered if it was possible just to get a hot dog or a pizza or something. "I was starting to get used to MI and now it's like here they've got completely different things."

Vane nodded. "But at least it's not MI," he pointed out. "Anything's got to be better than MI. For all I know their broom shed could have been just as bad. We were banned from it for long enough." His teeth clenched as he bit back a lengthy monologue on all the reasons he'd hated that place. Still, his mind went through them again. Caged in, no chance of gaining status, lying administration, imaginary Death Eater threats, Roman-Catholic-pure girls...

"Yeah, MI was horrible, you won't hear me complaining about missing that place," Connor said, wrinkling his nose. So yeah, he missed Holly. A little. But he could get over her quickly enough considering how many times he had actually been with her. "It didn't have much in the way of perks. I mean, even the lock down wasn't worth anything." Nothing had happened, and he hadn't even been able to do much with Holly.

Vane looked aside at Connor as they walked, appraising for a moment. There was nothing in him that would claim to know his friend's thoughts, but they knew each other too well for him not to know what Connor wasn't talking about. He'd mentioned her earlier. As far as Vane was concerned, the best way to forget a girl was with another girl. He had yet to prove himself right, but then, MI hadn't been much of an arena to do so.
"I can already tell the girls here are different," Vane said, still watching his friend out of the corner of his eye. "I haven't seen them tittering in the corridors yet. I also haven't seen any carrying around aquatic creatures with leashes." He'd heard about that.

Connor nodded, though he hadn't seen much in the way of girls anyway. He had barely even come into contact with the girls of his house. Of course, he hadn't even been in the school a week. "It's going to be better here," he said. "You know, the last time I talked to Holly she told me that her brother was a Death Eater before he died, and she said that she was part of an arranged marriage when she first met me."

Vane turned his head to look at Connor fully. "No, I did not know, he said. "Are you serious?" That wasn't the kind of thing that Connor would joke about, so the question was rhetorical, but it was still rather unbelievable. "She was engaged and she kissed you?" The arranged marriage was far easier to believe. Vane knew that some of the Pureblood families were fanatical enough to do so, but he'd been raised to believe that once you were married, that was it. Engagement, betrothal, whatever it was, was close enough.

Connor wrinkled his nose and nodded. "We were out on the Quidditch pitch and she got this letter saying it was canceled and was all excited about it. I read it and it said something about suitors and everything. Basically it said that there was no way we could go anywhere because she wasn't supposed to be with anyone that wasn't pureblooded and rich." And Connor was neither. He had all but accepted it back at MI, but it was a rallying point to make himself not care that he wasn't around her.

Vane wasn't about to suggest that not having a real future was a reason not to date a girl. Dating was nothing. He couldn't get over the part that she'd been engaged and acting as though she wasn't, though. And that she'd flat-out told Connor that nothing could happen. Even without having been in a serious relationship with Connor-- who appeared to be built for monogamy, bizarre as it was --it had to have hurt.
"We'll find you someone better," Vane assured his friend, clapping him on the shoulder, then leaving his hand there. "I saw a brunette in the halls who looked like she might devour you, but maybe that's what you need," he teased.

Connor grinned and shrugged beneath Vane's hand. It hadn't even been that he was worried about his future, but the more he thought about it the more he realized he didn't want to date someone that he didn't even have the possibility of something happening. "Oh yeah, I've always wanted to be dominated by some girl," he said, rolling his eyes.

Vane chuckled. "There's a lot to be said for a girl who knows what she's doing," he said sagely, then looked ahead again. Yes, there was a lot to be said. He'd never said it, though. For all the stories he'd begun, then let the gutter minds of his friends complete, he hadn't ever actually talked about what had happened with Serena. He wasn't sure he'd ever mentioned that it had gone beyond flirting. Vane's thoughts moved inward, and he wasn't sure how much time passed before he realized it and snapped to attention. "Anyway," he said, continuing as though he hadn't stopped, "give me another week and I should be able to fix you up." He smirked, knowing the likelihood that Connor would actually go for that.

"I don't have much choice, do I?" Connor asked. He had the feeling that if Vane wanted to do it, there would be no stopping him. "Besides, do you really want to see me bossed around by some girl?" He wasn't the most outgoing of the group, and having an overbearing girlfriend wouldn't help much anyway. Not that he was overly interested in one, anyway. He was just fine where he was in life.

Vane's nose wrinkled in displeasure at even the idea. His answer was an emphatic no. "That's my job," he said, then lifted his arm to wrap it around Connor's shoulders again. "It'd be painful to see you with a girl too shy to touch, though. You need one who'll make eye contact once in a while." A challenge with Connor, but Connor was too good to just settle. He'd waited this long, hadn't he? Aside from Holly, but she'd gone after him. It seemed like an impossible task to think of a girl who would be good enough for Connor.

Connor sighed and shrugged absently. "Hey, did you bring any cards or anything with you?" he asked, his mind moving easily from the topic of girls to card games. Any games really. He had missed the train to the teenage drama and was still playing a little bit of unwilling catchup. He would rather sit in the common room playing exploding snap or wizard's chess, except on the occasion that he had found a girl that caught his attention.

"They're in my trunk," Vane said, letting the subject go. It wouldn't do any good to keep pressing. Connor was already shy enough, and a good push could turn him off the idea girls completely. Or so it seemed sometimes. He had a flickering thought that he only caught as feeling and looked aside at Connor again, the warmth of his friend's shoulders beneath his arm suddenly thrown into his immediate attention. He didn't want to put his thoughts and feelings into words, and he told himself he didn't even want to pursue them. He wanted things to go on as they were. But what if... Vane blinked and looked ahead again.

"I'll have to steal them sometime, I can't find mine," Connor said, spreading his hands in his pockets and then balling them into fists. It was so boring sometimes, being a wizard, especially on school grounds. He had grown up jumping from his parents' house to his grandparents' and so he knew all the perks of being a muggle, including those video game things that had kept him occupied for hours when he went to visit them. And now he was stuck with cards the majority of the time. It just wasn't the same.
