Chase got it on his first try, though he was so surprised by the sudden flame that he dropped the match. He swore under his breath, then went in after another one. "I'll buy these off you," he offered. "I'll give you a couple Galleons for them." He wouldn't know where to find something like this otherwise, and he tended to get any contraband through others anyway. He was far more likely to get away with that than walking directly into a place to out-and-out buy it.

Ariel shrugged, "That's fine with me." He had an entire box up in his room. He didn't spare a thought to mention to the guy that a single little box cost barely a few knuts, much less a couple of galleons. His eyes fell closed as he took another long drag from the black stick between his fingers. He wondered absently if he should tell the guy that the matches didn't automatically stop burning after so long.

Chase discovered that with his next match. He got his cigarette lit, but ended up swearing again as it burnt his fingertips. He passed over the galleons anyway with a brief word of thanks, and though he wanted to keep trying, he could do that in private where he wouldn't have an audience. He tucked the little box away, then turned his attention toward relaxing in silence.

Ariel pocketed the galleons and positioned himself to where he could easily see the other guy from behind the safety of his hair. He could watch without being too obvious about it. He wasn't used to having to pretend not to be looking anymore, but that didn't mean he would make a big enough mistake to be found out. "So who are you?" he asked. During a conversation it was much easier to pass off watching someone.

Chase looked down at the guy, arching one brow slightly, not so much at the question as the way it had been asked. "Chase Firebrand," he answered simply. At this point he didn't care whether people recognized it or not, didn't care one way or another if any of his reputation preceded him. "Who are you?" he returned. Not that he particularly cared, but it could come in useful.

Ariel didn't come anywhere near recognizing the name and he didn't answer immediately while he put the name to the face and the body. It fit, though he thought it was the kind of name someone would have while dancing in a cage. One corner of his lips turned up in a near-smirk at the thought before he turned his eyes away to answer. "Logan Callahan."

Chase caught that look, but brushed it off. It could have been some random gossip he'd heard attached to the name, or something completely unrelated. Either way, Chase looked back out toward the water, taking another drag. He blew it out as he spoke again. "I haven't seen you around," he observed. "What house are you in?" He made it a point to know everyone, at least their faces and how closely he needed to watch them. It was a combination of his natural desire to watch and the attention he was supposed to pay other students as Head Boy. It was something to do.

Ariel liked the fact that the guy, Chase, hadn't seen him around. He stayed out of the eye of the students as much as possible, something that was easy when his evenings and nights were spent doing homework and his weekends....working. "Gryffindor, sixth year," he answered, then looked up. "I've been here a few months. And you?" He didn't exactly know Chase's name, either, not that he thought he should.

"Slytherin, seventh year," Chase returned, turning slightly to actually look at Logan if they were going to talk. "I've been here a year and a half, and if you know nothing else, you ought to know I'm Head Boy." Maybe it was a warning, maybe an offer of sorts. He'd have to see how this went. There were definitely certain people's habits he tended to turn the other way for, Anna's tendency to slip into the school just before the gates closed and long after curfew, for one. Her reason was legitimate enough, though she probably didn't even know that he was aware. He had to be aware, though. She was easier to avoid that way.

Ariel's eyes widened slightly at the revelation that Chase was the Head Boy. He was out there smoking, though, so Ariel didn't think he had anything to worry about there. "Please, Mr. Firebrand, don't turn me in," he said, then smirked, shook his head, and took a long drag on his cig. He only realized afterward that he had momentarily jumped into a different persona, something he never did outside of the clubs and the nights that came from them. He became suddenly interested in the shape of the smoke that came from his lips as he looked away from Chase.

Chase gave a low chuckle at that, plenty amused by it. "We'll see," he said, though his tone declared quite clearly that the danger was slim to none at the moment. He glanced out over the water, then down at Logan a moment before looking away. He had mixed feelings about that Mr. Firebrand bit now that he thought about it. He was going to be hearing that a lot in the near future, wasn't he? At least, aside from school. Apparently his mind was relating every last thing back to his current mission.

Ariel was immensely glad that Chase hadn't reacted to something that was now so obvious in his own memory. "I don't want to have to pull my wand on you," he said, his voice holding just enough of his sarcastic teasing to keep himself from being at the wrong end of the Head Boy's wand. He took one last long puff of his cig then put it out in the grass beside him. He held his breath for a few extra seconds before letting the smoke out in a long, smooth breath.

Chase gave a light snort at that. He was confident with his dueling skills. Very confident. Though it proved nothing at all, Chase couldn't help a quick jab, even if he was the only one who got it. "You ever think of doing that, you might want to check out the last guy I dueled. Runs the jewelry shop." Yes, Chase had scars too, but his didn't show.

"Maybe I will," Ariel said, shrugging. He wasn't about to just go off fighting the Head Boy of the school, anyway, so it didn't really even matter. "You know, Hogwarts always had the reputation of being this amazing school that kept to the rules," he looked up at Chase. "I'm finding more and more that it doesn't live up to expectations." It certainly shouldn't be so easy to get out whenever he wanted, and who would have thought that the Head Boy would be out smoking?

"The Headmistress has her hands full and it's easy to slip things past her. Some things, at least. She's got no patience for fighting and the like, but it's up to the prefects to enforce misdemeanors." Chase finished up his cigarette, then evanesco'd the evidence. "Curfew's a misdemeanor. So is anything you can't prove." The fact that he'd been smoking, for one. Before he headed back to the school, he'd be using a helpful little spell he'd learned to get rid of the smell.
