"I promise," Dare said, his grin returning. He leaned over the puppy to give Michael a brief but exultant kiss, finally pulling back when the furry body between them decided she'd been held too long and wiggled to be set down. He glanced aside at the glass enclosure, then at Michael before crouching down and putting the puppy on her feet. She scrambled for purchase on the smooth surface, then determinedly set off to explore despite her slipping paws. Dare chuckled.

Michael grinned and looked down at the ball of fluff as she slid around sniffing wildly at anything she could find. "So what are you going to name her?" he asked, sliding closer to Dare. He looked at Dare, then his eyes slid to his neck. "I think you have a little something there," he said, thought it meant something different than it had the last time he said it.

Dare glanced back at Michael and grinned, his gaze mentally following Michael's. "I'm not naming her love bite, if that's what you're thinking," he said. And hickey was out of the question. Dare chuckled as he looked back at the snuffling puppy. "Love Bite," he called, just to tease Michael. At the moment, he didn't really have much of an idea what to name her. He knew it would come to him, though.

Michael shook his head, "I don't think anyone would like that name very much." He could only imagine what it would be like to tell their friends that they had named their puppy Love Bite. "Could you imagine any of our friends calling her that?" He laughed and crossed his arms before moving over to the door and looking out. He still hadn't technically opened yet.

Dare chuckled as he did his best to picture it. "I see a lot of constipated expressions," he said. What would he name her? He firmly believed that animals' names should be playful, and definitely not something a person could be named without raising eyebrows. Dare watched the puppy, tossing out random ideas as they came to mind. "Bijou... Nefertiti... Moon Pie... Glycerine... Elouai..." The pup raised her head, and after a moment turned, trotting and sliding back toward Dare. "You're kidding me," he said, crouching to scratch her ears. "I don't even know where that one came from."

"Elouai?" Michael asked, tilting his head back at Dare. He unlocked the door and set the sign to open and came back to him. "She seems to like it," he commented after she looked back at him at hearing the word. "It works for me, if that's what you want." He wasn't picky about the name, whatever she was called, she was still theirs and would be the same.

Dare chuckled. "Elouai it is, then," he said. He started another game of attack-the-hand with her, then looked up at Michael. "So who's she take after more? Is she mixed blood like Daddy Dare or Pureblood like Daddy Michael?" He pinned her belly-up to the floor, where she wriggled and tried to nip at his wrist, then twisted free and bounced at him. Elouai. It had to be a Hawaiin name or something.

Michael shook his head and thought back to the catalogue, "According to the book she's a full blooded German Shepherd." He was very glad that the company had sent him a black one, or they might not have found her. Most of the animals were full blooded, except for a couple of kneazle-cat crosses that he had in a cage bordering the magical and nonmagical sections.

"Well aren't you a little princess?" Dare teased "She's going to need a diamond-studded collar." He chuckled at the thought. Even if Michael had a diamond-studded collar, he wouldn't actually go for it. He'd probably get stopped by someone who thought he'd stolen it and the dog wearing it. That started Dare's mind on all the things the dog would need, and the likely expenses from it. His smile faded a bit as he thought it over.

Michael laughed and crouched down beside Dare and reached down to take his own turn playing with her. "We can get whatever we want for her, I get a discount on that kind of thing," he said, glancing up at Dare. One of the good things about owning the store, anything they got from the catalogue would be less expensive than what it would be if they went somewhere else and bought it.

Dare looked aside at Michael, his eyes shining softly. "I don't want to put you out of business," he said, the teasing words a front over actual worry. They had a lot to arrange, and a new apartment, and he'd decided he couldn't part with a puppy. As he looked back at Michael playing with her though, he knew it was too late to change his mind. He was half in love with the pup already.

"You won't, I promise," Michael said, looking up at Dare, then leaning in for a kiss. It was cut short by the selfish bark of the puppy that had been almost forgotten, though, and Michael laughed as he turned his attention back to her. "She's going to go insane when we're at school," he said, shaking his head. He could always keep her downstairs with him while he was working.

Dare looked at her and sighed at the thought. It was a tempting thought to try smuggling her along in his book bag, but even if he thought she and his books would both fit, she was far too spirited to just lie there quietly. His lips curved again as he looked at her, one hand slipping just under the hem of Michael's shirt to rub absently against his lower back.

"We'll just have to work her into our schedule," Michael said, looking over at Dare. He didn't know how in the world they could, when all of the spare time they had that coincided was spent together, but even if he didn't know how, he knew that they could. "We can set up something upstairs for her to sleep in," he said when he looked back down at her.

Dare nodded at that, and he ruffled Elouai's ears once more before scanning the shop from where he crouched. She'll need a collar and a leash," he said, half to himself. One last glance at the picture Michael and the puppy made, and Dare pushed to his feet, smiling. "I know I said I wasn't going to steal anything, but I'm going to make a liar of myself," he said. Now he just needed to find the stuff.
