Michael didn't know how Emilian could act like that, when he had just spent so long in Germany to keep Adara. Emilian had no right to judge them! "This summer," he said softly, staring at Emilian in disbelief. He was only mildly comforted by the addition of Dare's other hand. What had happened between Emilian and Dare for Dare to have to defend himself?

"It'll be a... civil ceremony then," Dare said, "and it'll have been a year." He didn't feel like it was rushed, not when they'd loved each other for so long now. Dare had hoped that Emilian might take it as well as their moving in together, but he'd known better. "We're going to work on getting married, though." That was going to take time, surely long enough to appease Emilian, if there was any appeasing. He's mine. You lose. Give up. Move on.

Emilian stared into Dare's eyes. "A year." He didn't see how a year was long enough. "It's only been what, six months so far?" How could they be certain that it was right? They were already all but married anyway, why the hell did they need a ceremony to make it legal? In his eyes, that was a step that was completely unnecessary that had no true benefits.

It was one of the worst reactions that Michael had imagined. He hadn't thought that Emilian would be happy for them, but he had expected...at least a positive reaction. Emilian was the only person that had been there through his life, that was still there, and now Michael didn't know how to react. He didn't speak, didn't reply, just stared in continued disbelief.

"Yes, six months," Dare repeated, "and we've been through more in six months than most people go through in years." He told himself to stop now, but Michael had been quiet and Emilian was addressing him. He couldn't stand to just bend over and take this. Dare's leg uncrossed and he leaned forward a bit as he went on. "We've been ostracized, vandalized, and attacked, we've nearly been killed, you can't judge us from the outside just because you're jealous." Dare heard himself a moment too late.

Emilian's glare hardened further and he tightened his hands into fists. He wasn't jealous, he just didn't see the point. "What good will it do you to bring the government into you life?" he asked, "It won't change how you live." All it would do would take away their freedom to break away from each other should that come.

Emilian was going to drive Michael insane if he kept on like he was. His hand tightened in Dare's again, "How can you say it won't change? If it won't change, then what's the big deal?" he asked, eyebrows creasing. It wasn't any of Emilian's business anyway, he had no right to tell them, no more than anyone else did.

Dare had been about to tell Emilian that it was none of his damned business when Michael's hand tightened and he spoke. Dare's jaw tightened and he kept himself from adding anything to Michael's question. It didn't make the expression on his face any less mutinous, though. There wasn't anything Emilian could say or do that would stop this. If Michael's father hadn't done it, it wouldn't happen.

Emilian knew that he wouldn't get through to them, and he sent another glare to the both of them before standing and storming to his bedroom. Yes, it was childish, but he needed to get away for just a couple of minutes. He slammed the door without a look back, planning on staying just long enough to calm down to the point he wouldn't do anything stupid.

Michael watched Emilian leave and then stared at the door, his muscles tense. He didn't understand why Emilian was making such a big deal over it, over something they were so happy for. It took a couple of moments to take his eyes from the door, but even then they only made it to a point somewhere in front of him and not all the way around to Dare.

Dare's free hand crossed over him, taking the other's place with Michael's. Now free, the arm closest to him rose, then moved back to settle over his shoulders. He was silent for a bit, thinking over what had happened. "That's actually better than I thought it would be," he said at last, no humor in the words. He'd been expecting to get physically hurt.

"What in the world were you expecting?" Michael asked, looking over at Dare in disbelief. He couldn't imagine that there had been more that Dare thought could happen. He wasn't as comforted by Dare as he could have been, as he wished he could be. He personally had been expecting a better reaction than what Emilian had given.

"I might have expected a black eye," Dare said, his voice low. Yes, he believed he'd waited long enough to ask Michael, and yes, he believed it was none of Emilian's business anyway, but he could still understand why Emilian would be upset. When he'd sold Dare the rings, he'd been under the impression they were promise rings alone. Even aside from that though, Dare had seen Emilian's possessive side more than once.

Michael shook his head, "He wouldn't have made it that close," he said softly. If Emilian had gotten up to go after Dare, Michael wouldn't have been able to sit by and watch. He would have jumped in and stopped him. He gave a belated shake of his head and looked away again. It wasn't something he liked to think about, but he would have gotten Emilian away from Dare.

Dare looked over at Michael then, his chest tightening a bit at the words. He lifted their linked hands and shifted his around to the back of Michael's. "It'll work out," he murmured. He pressed a soft kiss to the center of Michael's palm, then slid his fingers between Michael's from the back. It had to work out. Emilian hadn't gone after Dare, nor had he kicked them out.
