Ava leaned against the dusty glass window and looked out onto the grounds of Hogwarts. Students were on brooms and flying, wands in pockets, laughing and smiling. It was so much to take in! Ava leaned closer, rubbing away some of the grime. Her view was blurry but still enough to see part of the magical world she had been invited to not so long ago. People in the wizarding world seemed so happy. Not like it was in her world. Ava frowned, feeling bad for leaving her father behind. He was not doing so well again, and she had taken up the offer of a new life leaving him on his own and defenseless. Oh well, it did not seem like he had much longer anyway. He was only in his middle forties and his entire head was graying and his entire face full of wrinkles.

Markise hadn't been paying attention to anyone, lately. He'd been making the quickest trips possible between the Hufflepuff Common Room and the Great Hall. At least half the time he grabbed some food and walked out with it rather than sit. Yes, he was avoiding someone, and no matter how ridiculous he knew it was, he couldn't bring himself to risk seeing him before he'd gotten over it.
So he didn't see the girl at the window, even as he paused rather close to her. His attention was on the contents of his sandwich, which were threatening to spill out the far side. It wouldn't have been so bad if his other hand hadn't been wrapped around a bottle of pumpkin juice and the stem of a banana.
Markise had to twist his hand into an awkward position to save his sandwich, but somehow managed it, even as he shifted his weight, accidentally knocking into the girl. His head shot up and he looked around at her as he stepped back, but all he could manage was an apologetic look as he tried to chew the enormous bite he'd just taken.

"Oh!" Ava squealed whipping around to face whoever had disturbed her. She placed one slim hand on her chest, which was rising and falling rapidly. "Sorry. Didn't see you," the Hufflepuff said her body relaxing. Slumping against the wall, she put one foot up for support and rubbed her eyes, the exitement of the wizarding world fading. Interest in life would return again sometime.
