For anyone who doesn't know by now, Barack Obama last night won the Presidential Election fairly easily... There are 538 total electoral votes, you need 270 to win... The count right now from NBC is Obama 349, McCain 162, with 2 states still left as too close to call.... Obama will be the 44th President and the 1st black president in the history of the USA... Finally after 232 years of being a country that was partially founded on slavery, we as a country elect a black person to lead this country... I am proud to have been a part of this historical election, it was my 1st time to be able to vote and I made my vote for Obama, even though I knew he would not win my state (Texas, a very very republican state). I hope that when Obama finally takes office in 76 days that things will start to get alot better not only for this country but for the world as a whole. As long as I live I will remember standing in the living room at 10:01 pm CST when all the channels called the election and named Barack Obama the President-elect

I have now earned my right to complain about the government for the next four years. If your guy loses, it's "Don't look at me, I didn't vote for him." If he wins, it's "This is not what I voted him in for!" Wow, I sound real intelligent after Ryan's heartfelt speech. I think I'll go sit down and look at the sticker I got for markering in the ovals correctly on my ballot. Hoorayforprogress!

We couldn't vote in Britain, obviously. But it still has a large effect on us. I don't think it was any secret that England and the UK hoped for Obama to win, although if it was because of his views or because we wanted to see a black president, I'm not sure.

Well America has voted in it's first non-white president.......and sadly it wasn't because of his stance on the issues. The statistics show it was an election based on race. I just finished reading the LA Times and it's so segregated it's sad. Instead of having a black president because we are finally past racial discrimination, we have one BECAUSE our country is racist. 95% of blacks that voted, did so for Obama. Overall he only won by a few percents, but because of how the electoral votes are distributed, he won by a "landslide".
I agree with Markise, no matter how you vote, you end up complaining after a short time of the person being in office. My theory is that anyone that actually WANTS the job isn't anyone that I would want in that position of power. Essentially it always comes down to choosing the lesser of two evils. However, I have strong pride in my country and will respect whomever is my Commander in Chief.

Actually anna I would have to say that this wasnt fully based on race.... Of course there were people that either voted for him or didn't vote for him becuase he was black, but if you go back to past elections, the majority of blacks in this country are democrats, I think Kerry and Gore got like 88% of the black vote

At the end of the day, it shouldn't matter what colour his skin is. He's exactly the same on the inside as the rest of us. If he does a good job and doesn't let the whole "I'm the first black president" go to his head, then fair play to him. We could have been having the same arguement if Hilary Clinton had gotten further and became the first "female" president. Everyone would have been saying "She only got it because all the women voted for her" etc etc. Yes history was made, but who cares? Let's just keep our fingers crossed that Obama does a decent job when he takes over.
I could never go into Politics. It's definately a job where you cannot please everyone. You can never make a right decision, because there will be so many others who would disagree. It's a no win situation.

*eyes Chase* Is it bad that I don't even care we've gotten off-subject?
*cough* Anyway, back on politics, of course it's about race. Just because you're not racist doesn't mean there isn't a twiggle in the back of about everyone's mind. After all, we noticed he's not white, correct? That comes with certain connotations no matter where you're from or what your beliefs are. Not to say that he was elected entirely because of his race. He has some good ideas, they both did. But America blames (wrongly or not) a lot on Bush, and they wanted something different from him. As much as McCain said he's not like Bush, to the unwashed masses (those who DON'T keep up on politics as much as say, us) McCain was still too much like Bush. Old white republican man. Again, Obama's demographic differences from Bush weren't the only things that got him elected, but they played a part. I'm with everyone else who's praying Obama does well, because if he doesn't, it could be a while before we get another Commander in Chief who's not an old white guy. But only time will tell, eh?
Oh yes, I can be deep.
