Olivia could sense his (she noticed his enlarged adam's apple) nervousness, so she gripped his hand firmly. "I'm sorry for the abruptness, but I saw you and didn't recognise you. I presume you are new?" She released his hand, letting her own fall by her side as she took his appearance in. For a guy, he looked extremely feminine and she could be forgiven for being confused of what gender he was. The potential threat of having competition in the school was now forgotten and she sized him up, thinking of him having a different potential altogether.

"I am," Markise said, pulling his hand back to safety. "How long have you been here?" Maybe that was why she'd sought him out. He'd only been here a couple weeks and hadn't seen her. Maybe she made it a point to introduce herself to the new students, though she was obviously treating him differently from the way she'd treated Ariel. Of course, Ariel was a jerk, and he'd deserved it.

"This is my fifth year." Olivia began, smiling sweetly. "So usually the only new faces we have around here are the first years. We tend to spot the older new ones easier, plus of course the school grapevine tells us when someone new has started. I had heard your name, but the face I had yet to put to it." The crowd that had been around them was now dispersing, students bored and disappointed that they didn't get any more action. "So where is it you have come from. Not England I take it."

Obviously not. Markise couldn't have imitated a decent British accent to save his life. "New York," he said, "U.S. I went to school in California, though. Until a month or so ago. Then I... transferred here." Actually, he'd been pulled from SWIM a month or so ago, but it had led to his being transferred here, and that was the main point, wasn't it? Markise started to relax, despite the topic of conversation, despite the fact that the crowd was clearing and he'd just seen Olivia tear into Ariel. She seemed nice right now, so he decided to give her a second chance.

Biting back a retort about New York being in the US, Olivia grinned at Markise. "Wow, really?" She said, enthusiastically. "That must have been a real hardship, leaving your friends behind." She placed her hand on his arm, giving the impression of a sympathetic gesture. "I can't imagine leaving all my friends behind and heading for somewhere new and unknown!" She smiled warmly at him, before continuing. "How have you found it here? I hope everyone has been welcoming."

"Mostly," Markise answered. "Everyone but that guy you were just with." Inside, Markise grinned at the jab, even if Ariel wasn't around to hear about it. "But I'm pretty sure he's just a jerk to everyone, so I'm not worried about it." No, he wasn't worried, just pissed off. He was glad he'd let that go before he'd gotten too deep into things with Ariel, or it would have been even harder to break away.

"He did seem rude and pathetic, I agree" Olivia replied, smirking slightly as she thought of their brief embrace. "He must be new too, as I don't recognise him either. He won't be making friends if he carries on like that." She continued, brushing back her curls as she contemplated how difficult she could make the guy's life if she chose to. "We should hang around sometime, don't think he'll bother you again if he see's me with you." She winked at Markise, her mind thinking over the idiot from before. If she played her cards right, he'd be back for more.

Markise's brows rose a bit at the girl's wink, something about it unsettling. She didn't at all look like she was actually flirting with him, and it wasn't the playful banter he usually engaged in. He couldn't decide what it was about her protective offer that didn't feel right. Still, his lips curved reflexively at Olivia's wink, whether he fully trusted it or not. "I'm not really worried about him, but thanks," Markise said. He paused a moment, thinking, then asked, "So where do you hang out? I'm still figuring the castle out, so I haven't got much more than the lake and the club in Hogsmeade."

"Welcome to the drabness of Hogwarts." Olivia retorted sighfully. "Other than Hogsmede and the occasional trip to London, that's about it. Those that like Quidditch tend to hang out at the Quidditch pitch, each vying for supremity. Then there's your common rooms where you get the occasional house party, before the teachers come and break them up. Most of the life and soul of this place is at Bloody Mary's. But if you're up to no good in Hogsmede, then it'll probably get sent of to Ms Kedavra at the Prophet for her latest article." Although Olivia was somewhat sarcastic with her comment about the Gossip columnist, Olivia secretly admired the woman and felt that they were akin. Gaby, like Olivia, wasn't afraid of putting out a few noses to get what she wanted. "What house are you in?" Olivia asked, realising that if he was a Slytherin himself, she could organise a party for that very night. How everyone would thank and admire her for being such a good sport!

"Hufflepuff," Markise said simply, neither pleased nor upset with the result. "I guess the hat couldn't decide." Yes, he was hardworking, and yes, he generally got along with anyone worth the trouble, but he didn't really think about those things, other than the fact that he hadn't been smart enough, brave enough, or determined enough to get into the other houses. "I haven't seen a house party in the Hufflepuff Common Room, but I've been to the Bloody Mary a couple times," he offered. He'd have added that there had been nothing to get sent to the Prophet, but he knew that was a lie, so he'd be better off just avoiding it. "So you dance?" Markise asked, interested.

"I have a Grade 8 in Ballet!" Olivia said proudly, his house forgotten about as she bought her hands above her head and stood up on the tips of her toes. "Plus I studied contempory dance for a while, until I got bored. What's the point of learning it, I thought to myself one day, what do I need it for?" If she stopped to think about it, Olivia would have had to admit to herself that her dancing had got her a lot of the attention she craved over the years. If she ever went to the Bloody Mary, she could not help but get on the dance floor and throw some moves around, taking it over, until she finished her piece to a round of applause. Laughing, Olivia glanced around and realised that they were only a few other students around them. Many had gone on to classes or met up with friends. "Have you got a class to go to? If you have, then I think you might be late."

Markise looked around, then shook his head as he brought his gaze back to Olivia. "I've got a free period," he said. Otherwise he wouldn't have even bothered stopping to watch the spectacle of Ariel getting verbally castrated. "What about you?" Markise's next question after whether Olivia danced was supposed to have been whether she'd check out the Bloody Mary with him some time, but she'd gone off on a tangent, so he held back until the subject came up again. He decided that she must be a good dancer with all that training, and that he'd like to dance with her. He didn't have formal training, per se, but he could definitely hold his own.

"I have nothing for today." Olivia said, rolling her eyes dramatically. "Mythology was supposed to start this afternoon, but apparantly the teacher is busy doing something else." Sucking in her cheek, Olivia decided that spending the next hour or so with Markise was better than sat on her own. Maybe he would flatter her ever expanding ego. "Seeing that we discussed the Bloody Mary just a moment ago, would you like to go there now? A warm butterbeer on a cold day like today would hit just the right spot I think!"

Markise couldn't stop the interested arch of one eyebrow at Olivia's invitation. It was certainly different actually being asked to go somewhere, Markise mused, shooting mental daggers at Ariel. "It sounds great," he told Olivia. He'd just owl his last class's professor later and claim some sudden illness. Markise was determined to have fun without Ariel. He didn't have issues with female friends, and Olivia didn't seem attracted to him in any way he might have to dissuade, so he let his guard down and decided to just enjoy the opportunity.

Olivia grinned, her brown eyes flashing excitedly. "Super!" She said, clutching her cloak around her. "Let me run up and get some money from my dorm and then I'll meet you at the bloody mary in say.. ten minutes?" Olivia didn't wait for an answer, she was already backing away from Markise as she spoke. With a quick flick of a wave, Olivia spun on her heel and darted off to her dorm, her cloak bellowing behind her. www.magikal05.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=bm&thread=3757
