Cleo picked her way down the street, keeping to the deepest shadows. She had been warned away by Herr Snow, but she had to find something for Adara, some token for her. Her heart crumbled a bit more at the prospect of telling Adara of his death. She crept into the shop, drawing her cloak around her as she wondered what would be the best thing to take.

Dahlia's heels clicked on the stairs as she entered the shop, wand drawn, eyes wide as though she were a scared child. In truth, she couldn't know who she would find, and she knew how childlike her features were; feigned innocence seemed her best chance. When her eyes caught on the girl, taller than her to be sure, but obviously much younger, she inwardly relaxed. But only a bit. "Can I help you?" she asked, her silky voice far stronger than her outward appearance.

Cleo spun at the sound of footsteps, female footsteps, why would anyone, especially a woman, be here? Cleo smiled at the woman, and looked around briefly before returning her gaze to her. "I heard about Emilian" Cleo said softly, swallowing the lump down in her throat. "I came to find something for Adara, a token. I thought she would appreciate it and I expected the place to be deserted" she continued.

Dahlia inclined her head, her mind making connections in a snap. If she was here for a token, she could only believe that Emilian was dead, and, as that was the safest belief all around, Dahlia did not deign to correct her. "It is such a shame," she said in her baby-soft voice. "The upstairs didn't fare nearly as well, it's quite dangerous actually. I've been sorting through his things for his family. Tragic, really, their only son." All complete bull, but Dahlia was an accomplished liar, and let no sign slip that she was not entirely genuine. "What was it you were hoping for? Perhaps I can find something?" she offered sweetly.

Cleo nodded, she wasn't sure if she believed it all, but she was too tired to bother arguing. "I don't know, a sweater of his, or a picture. Something for his Adara" she couldn't be bothered to explain the relationship between them. "If you do find something that would be very kind of you" she said gratefully.

Dahlia looked at the girl a moment, appraisingly. She didn't quite trust her to stay put, but it wasn't like she had much of a choice. "Stay here," she said. "I'll run up and see if I can find anything that hasn't been scorched too badly. I've been in all day, so I know my way around the safer spots." Her gaze hardened for just a moment, a flickering warning that the girl had better not try anything, then Dahlia turned back up the stairs to see what she could find.
Dahlia returned a short time later, still compressing her annoyance. She extended her hand to the girl with her offering in it, a dark wood brush with a gold ring around the top of the handle. "This is it," she said. "Can't make it past what's left of the living room, but this somehow made it through in one piece."

Cleo heeded the warning and stayed where she was, as tempting as it was to wander around and satisfy her curiosity. She waited, a little impatient for the return of the woman.
Cleo took what was offered to her and inspected it carefully. She knew that things wouldn't be too damaged, the Headmistress would not lay weak spells, but she didn't say anything. "Thank you, I'm sure Adara will greatly appreciate it and thank you for taking the time to find it." she said, running her finger along the smooth wood handle absently. "Please express my condolences to the family as well" she added thoughtfully.

"I will," Dahlia said, laying one hand lightly on Cleo's arm and turning her toward the door. "Thank you so much for your support...what was it you said your name was? I'd like to have something to tell the family, so they know who I've been giving away poor Emilian's things to." Yes, poor Emilian, who might as well be dead for all the use he was. The boy was drowning in his own pity, and it was sickening, but she was in far too deep by now to turn back.

Cleo made her way to the threshold and turned back to talk to the woman. "I didn't but my name is Jade" she said, the lie rolling off her tongue smoothly. Using the name of her best friend caused her no guilty conscience, and for all she knew this woman was in contact with Herr Snow. He could not know that Cleo had been there. "I just need something to remember him by" she said softly before leaving. As the cool night air washed over her she paused for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. She choked back the growing lump in her throat at the thought of telling Adara.

Dahlia watched the girl go, suspicious about the whole thing, even if there was nothing she could actually argue with. Jade. She'd just go see if the girl had been lying right now, or as soon as she could wake Emilian up enough to give her a straight answer. If the girl was such good friends with his Adara, he was bound to know her. Dahlia closed the door and fixed a few stronger spells on it than she'd left before, then turned back up the stairs.
