Cleo was slightly taken aback by his questions, but her mind supplied answers readily. "I was with Adara when she received the owls. As she left I made my way into Hogsmeade and I went to the shop. I found the place deserted and badly damaged." Cleo said, trying to compose herself as she knelt to tend to Adara. She stroked the dark hair from the girl's face, soothing her.

There was a moment of a different emotional pain when Michael felt Dare leave him, but when he realized the reason, it melted back into the shock he was still feeling from the news. Dare's words worked to pull him out of it, and he found his voice, though it was slightly hoarse, "Are you sure? I mean...wouldn't he have tried to get out?" He couldn't see Emilian staying in a burning building, though he knew that if it had happened while he was asleep or didn't have his wand, he might not have been able to do anything.

That had been close enough to Dare's next question that he let it lie, looking to Cleo for answers. If there was a chance, they had to know. For Michael's sake as well as Adara's. Dare wished he knew what to do for Adara, wished he could be in two places at once so he could hold Michael. He released Adara's hand, sitting back to pull out his wand. He wasn't entirely sure he knew a spell that would revive her, but it was worth trying.

Cleo shrugged apologetically. "As sure as I can be" she replied, looking down at Adara. "I didn't stay terribly long, I knew that sooner or later someone would show up and I didn't want to meet them. I dreaded telling her the whole way here, I knew what it would do to her" she said softly. "I wish that I didn't have to bear such news" she finished, smoothing a lock of Adara's dark hair.

Adara woke to gentle hands brushing at her face, and all she could think was that she'd had some horrible nightmare. But as her lashes fluttered, then rose, her eyes took in the room, and everything washed over her again. Her brows knit, and she squeezed her eyes shut, willing everything to go away, willing herself to wake up again and find that it was a lie, that her fears had created the day in her mind. "Tell me I'm sleeping," she whispered.

Michael shook his head, "No, I have to go down there." He shook his head and curled his hand, the one that had been wrapped in Dare's, into a fist and pulled it to his leg. After another moment he stood to walk to the door. He was still in those first moments of shock, it hadn't settled in yet, he couldn't believe it, he was doing part of it himself, keeping the reality at bay by the idea that it was true until he could see it with his own eyes.

Dare was on his feet in an instant, catching at Michael's hand to ground him. "You can't," he said, unsure whether Michael would even listen. His other hand rose, rested against Michael's jaw and drew his face toward him, hoping Michael wouldn't pull away. "You can't go alone, it's too dangerous. I don't want to lose you," he added softly. Not so soon, not when I just found you.

Cleo only half listened to the boys as she studied Adara, concerned about her. "I wish I could" Cleo whispered, her eyes wide with grief and depair. "I wish it was ossible" she continued as she gathered Adara into her arms gently, wrapping her safely in an embrace. "I'm not going anywhere" she said softly, giving Adara someone to hold on to, someone to anchor herself to.

Adara let Cleo help her sit, let numbness set in. It was too painful to think, even as her hand curled around the shattered remnants of Emilian's wand. She reached for the brush, knowing it was his, recognizing it, she clung to any part of him she could. Then her gaze lifted to Michael. He was part of Emilian too, was he not? And yet she hadn't the strength to call to him, to lift herself and go to him.

Michael shook his head, looking up at Dare. "I didn't think..." he trailed off, didn't think what? That it would affect him so much? It only made sense, didn't it? He and Emilian had been together since the very beginning. He had momentarily forgotten Adara, though the pain must have been horrible for her, she was the one that had connected with Emilian the way no one else had. Michael wrapped his arms around Dare's shoulders and put his face in the crook of his neck. His eyes remained dry, but he still wanted the comfort, even if there were others in the room.

Dare wrapped his arms around Michael, letting Adara and Cleo fade for now. Michael needed him, and he needed to be needed. Dare couldn't think of anything to say that would even begin to make things right, so he just held Michael, and tried to give whatever comfort he could with his presence.

Cleo just held Adara within the circle of her arms. She silently cursed Herr Snow although she knew that by agreeing to his offer, and even by taking a quill today she had bound herself to him and it would be hard to break free. She sighed, it wasn't about her at the moment though, Adara needed all her thoughts and energy.

Adara stared down at the objects in her hands, seeing less of them in her mind's eye than the familiar hands that had held them. It seemed strange how detached she could feel from everything, even while her heart ached so that she wished she might die from the pain rather than bear it. Her cheeks felt hot, moist, but she was hardly there, beyond praying for the oblivion of a dream world that had abandoned her.

Michael's muscles remained tense, even being wrapped up in Dare wasn't enough to push the knowledge away. He wanted to speak, but his throat had closed up, not to mention he couldn't think of anything that would work. He was beginning to remember Adara, though it hadn't really sunk in yet what she must be going through.

There was no lightening a mood like this. Dare went over the past minutes in his mind, though they felt like hours, trying to find something, and his mind lit on Cleo, their questions, and Michael's immediate reason for standing up. Dare's arms tightened around Michael as he debated, then murmured, just loud enough for Michael, "If you want to go, I'll go with you." Dare didn't know that Michael would stay away, and Dare wouldn't let him face this alone.
