That had been altogether weird at the end, Dare thought, stepping out onto the street in front of the Jewellery Shop. It had been weird at the beginning too, he realized. But he supposed it didn't really matter. He'd gotten an awesome portrait, and something interesting to mention to Michael later.

(((Note to readers; this isn't Herr Snow himself, but an "associate" who works for him. Herr Snow wouldn't do the dirty work himself.)))
As the shop door closed behind the boy, a man stepped out of the shadows at the side of the shop. He approached silently, stopping just in the boy's path. "Do you have a moment, young man?" he asked cordially. He glanced pointedly up at the shop. "I just noticed you leaving and wondered what you had purchased. I am considering making a purchase of my own."

Dare resisted the urge to arch an eyebrow at the guy. "If you want to know what he sells, you ought to go inside and look," he said. "Business hours are posted." Dare moved to step around the guy. He didn't have the patience for this right now. He had enough to think about without weirdos on the street.

The man shifted with the boy, blocking his path again. "Pardon me, but perhaps I have misrepresented myself," he said. "I have an interest in the shopkeeper as well and, again, if you will pardon my having noticed, it is past closing and you have just left the shop. Would you speak with me, for only a few minutes? I will not take much of your time."

Dare looked at the guy incredulously. "Listen, if you want to know about the guy who owns the place, either come back when it's open, or read the Daily Prophet. From what I hear, he's all over it. I really don't know anything about him, and I've never even been in the shop til today, so if you'll excuse me..." Dare said, working to step around the man again, "I've got to get back to the school."

The man's hands rose then, settling on the boy's shoulders. "A few minutes of your time," he said, his face still friendly, though his voice had grown cold. "How do you know Mr. Sota? Are you friends? Associates? I can make it worth your time to tell me, or I can make you wish you had." And if it was this difficult to obtain information, he would get others to assist him.

Dare was thoroughly creeped out now. He pulled out of the man's grasp and stepped back, tucking his sketchbook under his right arm as he fumbled for his wand with his left. "Listen, whatever's going on here, I don't know anything." His heart thudded in his chest as his hand wrapped around his wand's handle and he drew it out, though he wasn't entirely certain how well he'd be able to defend himself. Still, having it gave him a small measure of courage.
"I went in to draw him, that's all. I don't know him, we're not friends. I'm an artist, a student up at the school, and I will be missed if I'm not back soon!" He had no idea who this guy was, and he didn't even want to know at this point. He just wanted to get back on school grounds in one piece.

The man looked at the boy, wand drawn as though he might stand a chance. He looked too terrified to make a move, or even to be lying to save himself. Still, his job depended on being thorough. He stepped closer to the boy, who had not broken eye contact during their exchange. "Surely you know something," he said. "Perhaps about his lover?" It was a theory only at this point, but one which needed explored. Legilimens.

"I told you, I don't know anything about..." Dare's words were cut off, and he was sucked inward, a wave of memories washing through his mind. There were brief flashes of things, sweeping forward in time persistently, but Dare fought and somehow closed himself off. He found himself backed against the wall of the shop, wand fully raised. He blinked, regrouped, and disapparated as close to the school gates as he could manage. He didn't have his license yet, but he figured he'd be forgiven, considering the circumstances. magikal05.proboards46.com/index.cgi?board=lake&action=display&thread=3509&page=1#68730

The man uttered a curse. He had been so close. At the least, the information he had gotten from the boy corroborated with his story. The man resumed his post in the shadows and waited for his relief to come, at which time he would go and give his report.
