Emilian took it and examined it, seeing the thoughts in his own eyes that Dare couldn't know, but had caught so well. He nodded his acceptance and approval and stood, handing it back to him. He didn't think that he needed to tell Dare that it was good, it would be obvious enough in his eyes. "So is this basically what we'll be doing?" he asked, glancing up at Dare as he pulled open a drawer to pull out parchment, a quill, and ink.

"Basically," Dare said, watching Emilian. "When I'm alone sometimes I'll start up some music, but I don't really hear it." Dare realized he'd gone off-track and pulled himself back. "For a basic portrait or a study, it's just this. It's not unless I'm doing a major portrait, something large-scale, or a painting that it gets time-consuming. Or that I'll need you to hold completely still," he added. Dare flipped his sketchbook shut for now and turned to cleaning up, as careful as he could be not to let charcoal dust get onto anything.

Emilian nodded absently as he sat down on his couch and leaned over to the short table in front of it, setting the parchment and ink down. He paused for a moment in thought before opening the bottle of ink, dipping the quill in, and starting to write. "How often?" he asked lightly, barely moving his lips as his hand moved across the parchment.

Dare thought about that for a moment. "Once a week ought to be fine, unless I start something bigger. I'm not planning on any massive projects right now, though." Dare was quiet a moment as he thought about what he did have plans for. "So you want me to just hold off on drawing Adara til she can get down here?" he asked cautiously. He'd really prefer to get a head start, get some portraits to show Emilian so he could decide what he wanted, but if nothing else, he could always wait.

Emilian paused in writing, just stopping himself from giving a firm yes. Then he wondered, how long would it be before Adara could? He silently berated himself for losing his temper with her father, perhaps if he had been able to hold out just a bit longer, she would have been able to come to him. "I don't know when she'll be able to come down here." He looked up at Dare as if to say I'm putting my trust in you, but didn't voice the words. "Go ahead and start if you need to." Then he turned his eyes back to the note in front of him, trying to remember what else he needed to say.

Dare's eyes met Emilian's. He nodded, highly aware of the thin line he was walking with that permission. And it was permission, that much was obvious. Dare decided Michael hadn't been exaggerating about that possessive streak and determined not to give Emilian anything to act on.
It took a few minutes, but Dare got his box packed up and stored away, then stood, looking back down at the chair to make sure he hadn't left any smudges or dented the cushions. He really hoped he could get used to this.

Once Emilian decided he couldn't add anything else to the note, he signed his name and stood to put away the quill and ink while he let the ink dry. He dipped the quill into a small vial that sat in the drawer and it came back clean so that he could store it without worry, then he reached for a ribbon and turned to the note. When he was sure it was dry, he rolled it up and tied the ribbon lightly around it. "Thank you," he said, handing it to Dare. Taking the note was completely an act of kindness, and Emilian was willing to voice his thanks for the willing contact with Adara.

Dare could feel more than just the words, and as he took the scroll, he glanced away. "It's no problem," he said, somewhat uncomfortable with the gratitude. He was only delivering a note, after all. Dare tucked the scroll away and made a mental note to deliver it as soon as possible. Whatever was going on here, he wasn't sure he wanted any part of it.

To Emilian it wasn't just a note, it was his only contact with Adara, who he had so badly needed to talk to before. He needed the comfort of her as much as he wanted to give her all the comfort he could. "I'll see you next week," he said, ready at last to face being alone. He felt that he could tolerate the lack of distraction finally.
