Reflections (Kevin/closed)

[Gabby Brocklehurst]

Gabby sat at the edge of the lake, consumed by thought. She was staring into the water, at her reflection. On the outside she looked like the same old Gabby, same rosy cheeks and messy curls tumbling over her shoulders. Her eyes were empty though, once they had been full of life but now there just useful to see with. She felt cold and numb, the only thing she could feel was the anger, dejection and grief burning inside her chest. A tear rolled down her cheek, but it was lost among the rain drops that started to softly fall, disturbing the glassy surface of the lake. As her reflection started to distort and twist, she felt that she was finally seeing a true reflection of herself.

Kevin loved the rain. This simple fact was all it took for Kevin to be seen walking across the grounds out in the storm, splashing in puddles, and generally acting like a fool. Kevin usually didn't like the outdoors, but for some reason, on this day, in the rain, he was actually having..........fun! Kevin laughed out loud, and ran down to the lake, excited at all the possibilites. His laughter died quickly though when he saw the girl sitting by the lake. Her face was long, and tears were leaking out of her eyes. Kevin walked over to her, a concerned expression on his face. "Hey, are you okay? You don't look so good."

Gabby looked up, startled and her face immdiately assumed a scowl. "What do you care, why does anyone care" she said, before turning away again, wiping her tears at the same time. She was frustrated with him for seeing her like this, and with herself for being like this in the first place.

Kevin was slightly taken aback by her attitude, but he could also see that she was in real pain. He sat down next to her, and put his hand on her shoulder. "I care.......I hate seeing anyone in this much pain. What happened to you?"

Gabby flinched at his touch. What had happened with Ryan had killed her trust in guys. "I met this guy, we started dating, we even got engaged, he met his ex, he cheated on me and I was dumped on my ass" she said. Her voice held no emotion, she wasn't sure if she could even show emotions anymore, except for the occassional tear and she was sure she had forgotten how to smile. "Glad you asked" she said sarcastically. Picking up a smooth pebble and watching it skip several times across the lake before it sunk. She sighed and pushed a couple of damp curls away from her face.

Kevin sighed. "Life is hard hun, and sometimes it feels like it needs to teach us a lesson in the meanist was possible. I don't know what it is trying to teach you now, but what I do know is that any guy who is stupid enough to dump someone as beautiful as you needs to have his brain checked." Kevin smiled at the girl, and looked out into the lake. "By the Way, what's your name?"

Gabby nodded and turned to him. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure that having my heart ripped out and ground into the dirt is the meanest possible thing that could happened to me, and I'm sure it happened for a reason" she said sarcastically, glaring at him for a moment. As she heard his words about being beautiful she sighed and drew her knees up, wrapping her arms around them then resting her chin on her arms. "I'm sorry" she muttered, and she was although she didn't sound it. "Just for the record, I'm no 'hun' and if I am as beautiful as you saw I am, why did he throw me away?" she voice dropped to a whisper at the last words and she looked at him, her eyes brimming with sorrow, hurt and confusion. She was only young after all, she wasn't as tough as the older girls. She completely forgot to tell him her name as she was so caught up in trying to fiugre out how she was feeling about what had happened.

Kevin stared out into the lake thinking about what the girl said. "I didn't say it was easy to accept. Most people have a hard time looking past the bad part of a situation to see the silver lining. It is there though, it might be thin and bare, but its there." Kevin smiled at the girl, and then looked back out into the lake. "And you are beautiful, don't ever let anyone say otherwise. Beauty isn't enough to forge a lasting relationship though. You need love, and trust. Maybe he fell out of love, it is known to happen, or maybe he suffered a severe blow to the head. Either way, the point is, you are obviously better without his lying cheating @$$ around, and I know that one day, probably very soon, someone else will rise up to take his place. Just don't be so bogged down by all your negative emotions that you end up missing it." Kevin smiled at the girl again. "You still haven't told me your name."

Gabby listened, she knew he was talking sense, but a part of her just didn't want to know. She looked round at him. "Gabrielle" she said, smiling just a little. "Most people call me Gabby though" she admitted. "What's yours?" she asked. When she had first seen him, she'd just wanted to, well, kill him as he was a guy. But there was something about how he didn't seem to be fazed by her extreme mood swings that made her feel calmer and more relaxed. "So the usual, what house and year are you in?" she asked, she had never been good at guessing things like that.

Kevin smiled. "Gabrielle huh? Is there anything about you that doesn't resonate beauty?" Kevin grinned, and looked back out at the lake. "I'm Kevin, sixth year Hufflepuff. It is nice to meet you Gabby. What house and year are you in?"

Dspite herself, Gabby felt a blush blossoming on her cheeks and she failed and stopping a smile from creeping onto her lips. Looking away in hopes he wouldn't see, she gazed out over the lake as it finally started to stop raining. "Nice to meet you too I suppose" she said, she couldn't really tell as her emotions had been haywire recently, but she took the smile to be a good sign. "Gryffindor fourth year" she replied, that response didn't take much thinking.

Kevin saw Gabby blush, but he didn't say anything about it. He didn't want to embaress her anymore than she already was. He smiled, and turned to look at her. "Gryffindor huh? Is it true what the sorting hat has, that Gryffindor is where the brave of heart dwell?"

Gabby turned to look at him, shrugging. "If being 'brave of heart' lands you with a new scar every week then I suppose so" she said honestly. She ran her hand through her wet curls, coaxing them back into place. "I would ask if Hufflepuffs are true, just and loyal. But unfortunately I found out that not all of them are the other day" she said, bitterness creeping into her voice as she spoke about Ryan. "I'm sorry, positive thoughts right?" she said, a grin spreading on her face. There was something about him that immediately put you at ease and talking to him was so simple.

Kevin smiled. "Indeed, Positive thoughts. I don't want to see you crying again." Kevin shrugged his shoulders, and tilted his head a little. "Everyone makes mistakes, I guess the Sorting Hat is no exception to that rule, and why are you getting scars? Do you have a little bit of an adventurous side?"

Gabby smiled, "What will you do if you do see me crying again?" she asked, a litle curious. "He did say he was nearly a slytherin I suppose" she admitted. "Well I haven't had any in a while, but I've got two pretty recent ones, both from slytherin girls." If he asked, she would show him and tell him all about it, but she wasn't going to force it on him.
