The Princess turned to Jack as they entered the room where music played, pulsing around the dance floor. She did not ask him to dance, but looked her question with a tilt of the head and a glance from beneath ink-black lashes.

Jack smiled down at her, seeing the question in her eyes and putting an arm around her waist. He pulled her out to the floor where there were already a small group of people moving to the music. He didn't pull her against him, keeping a short distance between their bodies, and took her free hand with his. It had been so long since he had danced, not that he had exactly missed it, but it was good to be on the floor again.

It was strange feeling his hands against her, even if there was nothing improper in their placement. Her hand curved into Jack's, and she placed her hand delicately against his shoulder, inclining her head in approval, in silent gesture that she was ready to begin, and she would follow his lead. This was a dance she understood and knew well, one she had always enjoyed.

"Forgive me if it takes me a moment," Jack said, "It's been too long." Even the dancing he had been able to do wasn't this kind. He started the motions, taking a few seconds to get into the rhythm, leading her in the dance. He fell easily back into the pattern, he supposed that once learned, it never really went away.

The Princess moved into the dance with Jack, smoothly accepting of the moments it took him to recall the steps. Little time had passed before she recognized an expert, and her lips widened into an easy smile. "You are very good," she observed, looking at him curiously. Who was he? She wondered if she had ever met him before. Surely she would recognize him if she had.

One side of Jack's mouth turned up, "Thank you, I've had quite a bit of practice." Mostly unwilling practice, but that was beside the point. "You're not bad yourself." She moved gracefully and easily with the music. His eyes sparkled at her curious look, he didn't think she'd figure out who he was, there was always the possibility, though.

"Thank you," the Princess said, her smile widening. "I also have had much practice, but then, I adore dancing, so it is worth it, after all." The freedom of motion was nearly intoxicating; the Princess was enjoying herself thoroughly. "You are the most polished pirate I have ever met," she teased, eyes sparkling. She had never before met a pirate, it was true, but she was pleasantly surprised.

"Well perhaps I've been exiled from my family and forced into being a pirate," Jack said, grinning. "Perhaps I was born into high blood." He was enjoying himself immensely, dropping clues. Whether she listened to them, that was another story entirely. "I'd much rather be a pirate, though."

The Princess could not be sure whether he was giving her clues or simply playing the part, so she went along with him, watching him closely for signs. "Is pirating very exciting, then?" she asked. He had a lovely smile. Entirely genuine, it made her feel entertaining, amusing, and appreciated.

"Oh yes, very. Swordfights and treasure hunting," Jack's eyes gleamed in humor. "By far the best part is all the places I see, though." He was getting into character now, it had taken him a few minutes to get into it, but now that he had it he was going to run with it. He could make his stories believable.

The Princess laughed lightly at Jack's simplistic description of pirating, and decided that he had likely been playing all along, though she didn't doubt that he was highborn, or at the very least a gentleman at heart. "What places have you visited?" she asked, pleased with the game and genuinely interested in his reply.

"I've been all up and down this coast, love. My favorite is France, it's beautiful in the fall. I owe this one nasty bloke some money, though," he mused, looking off into space before brining his eyes back to her, smirking. "So, tell me about your castle," he said, "I'm sure a Princess such as yourself has a beautiful home."

The Princess blushed lightly, a soft rose that blossomed on her skin at the attention, at the endearment, and at the game. "Why, this is my castle," she said, as though the matter were very nearly obvious. "I have been allowed from my tower for the ball alone, and have only this night before I will return to my solitary life, with only my candle to comfort me." She was the princess from her dreams, the princess as she had been at first creation, innocent, unknowing, and eager to learn.

Jack raised an eyebrow, "My, my, I believe I would have to escape from something like that. What do you do up in your tower all alone?" She was playing her part well, even down to the prim and proper way of speaking that one would expect from a Princess confined to one place her entire life.

The Princess's lashes lowered at the question. Sometimes her story was so close to the truth as it had been that it was difficult to separate the two. "I perfect my studies in all things that a princess should know; literature, art, and the supportive running of a castle." She raised her eyes to Jack's again. "But the nights are my own, and once the sun has begun to fall, I watch the sweep of the land from my window, and I dream of the world outside these stone walls." A world that was infinitely more complex than she had ever dreamed.
