Timestamp: A few days before the ball
Derek sat at a table in the corner of the bar, supping unenthusiastically on a butterbeer. Laid out on the surface in front of him was a sheet of parchment, covered in the familiar scrawl of a certain other Hufflepuff. Diggory seemed composed, but there was just the hint of sadness in his eyes as he pored over Kira's letter.
Dear Derek,
You know, it really isn't too much to ask to let your friends know what's going on, is it? Just one letter, the past several months, to let me know you were OK and everything.
I've missed you loads, but apparently I'm not important enough to merit one measley little Owl. Well, have it your way. This will be my last letter.
Yours regretfully,
Kira Kingston.
As he reached the end of the letter, Derek let out an audible sigh. He hated having to keep his friends in the dark. Surely, though, Kira must realise that he wouldn't have cut her out of the loop without a very good reason? Derek had thought they'd trusted one another, but apparently this only went so far.
It was a shame, but some things were more important even than friendship.
He continued to nurse his pint, trying to avoid feeling sorry for himself, and instead think about what he needed to do in the coming weeks.

It had been a bad day. The last thing Lila needed was seeing Derek Diggory, especially when her twin was still pining after him. Giving out an exasperated sigh, Lila turned her back on him and stood at the bar. She wasn't going to run back to Kira to tell her he was back, she thought to herself. She'd find out soon enough and Lila wasn't a messenger anyway. As long as she pretends she doesn't see him, it'll be fine. She had better things to think about anyway. The ball for example. She had yet to decide if she was going, let alone what she would wear. Her sister had badgered about it for most of the morning and Lila's ears still rang with talks of lace and feathers. Then she had gone on about Derek again. It was sickening to see her sister so distraught and Lila had taken the first chance that come across to get away. So here she was. Standing at the bar knowing he was behind her. Her luck indeed sucked.

It took Derek something of a while to look up from his letter. When he did, he eyes were drawn to a familiar a familiar blonde form standing at the bar. For a split second, he'd thought it Kira. Close, but no cigar. Even after the time they'd spent out of touch entirely, he'd have known his friend instinctively. Rather, her comportment and mannerisms quickly revealed that it was the Slytherin twin standing in front of him.
Derek's interactions with Lila had always been cordial, rather than warm. He hadn't really associated much with Slytherins full stop, well, not since Potterslouth and that Wagner girl (what was her name again? Ah, no matter) had left the school. But it had to be said, even cordial discussion beat sulking in the corner all night. You could never be too sociable.
Derek finished his butterbeer, and made his way over to the bar. He turned to face Lila, and smiled at her, his lip curling upward at the side. "Evening, Lila. Long time no see!" He paused for a second, to nod at the barman. " How's life treating you these days? Can I get you a drink?"

Lila groaned quietly and turned her head to look at the Hufflepuff next to her. "No, I'm good. Thanks." She said, then turned back again. The last thing she had wanted was to attract his attention and if she had thought about it enough, she should be sticking to her sister's side and ignoring him like he ignored Kira. Still feeling his presence beside her, she shot him an aggrevated look. "Is there something you want, Diggory?" She asked scathingly.

Derek chuckled. "Well, as it happens, I do. For starters, I want you to drop the whole 'nasty Slytherin' schtick you're trying to pull. I get it, you're trying to show the world how different you are." He looked her firmly in the eye, and tried not to laugh.
"But c'mon. Anyone who's spent five minutes with either of you knows you're nothing alike, for a million reasons which have nothing to do with this front you're putting up. Besides, you're in a pub. People either come to pubs for drinking or conversation." He stopped again for a moment, and looked around the mostly empty barroom. "Right now, you're not doing either. So, again... how are you, and would you like a drink?"

Lila's jaw dropped slightly as she listened to Derek. She hadn't seen this side of him before and it was a little shocking yet it amused her. "Alright Diggory. I'll have a butterbeer. But seriously. Why are you talking to me? We haven't got on in the past."

"I don't know if that's strictly true," Derek said, "We've just moved in different circles." He ordered a couple of butterbeers from the barman, and handed over the galleons to pay for them. "I don't know about you, but I've never disliked you." This was true, as far as Derek could recall- he'd always been perfectly civil towards Lila, and on the few situations they'd actually had anything to talk about, he'd felt they'd gotten on fine, the whole best-friends-with-her-twin thing notwithstanding.

"I always thought you were stuck up to be truthful" Said Lila, tact not being a strong point of hers. "Anyway I suppose we can leave that behind us. I'm surprised to see you." She stated, thinking this was a good time to find out what really went on between him and her sister. "Kira said you had, now what did she say? Ah, disappeared off the face of the world. Yet here you are in the Three Broomsticks. You had a row?"

Well, I didn't just 'disappear' to spite her, for starters," he said, sounding a little bit annoyed. "Perhaps one day Kira might come to terms with the world not revolving around her." He winked at Lila at this point. 'Basically, I had to be elsewhere kind of in a hurry, for reasons I couldn't tell anyone round here, not even Kira. I'd kinda hoped she knew me well enough to know I wouldn't just vanish without a particularly good reason. Well, you live and learn." Derek sounded faintly exasperated, and a little far off.
He handed Lila one of the two butterbeers, and raised the other in salutation. "To open minds," he said, impishly.
