The sunlight blinded her eyes as Vannah walked through the Entrance Hall, savoring her freedom. She was finally out of the Hospital Wing. She breathed in the air and savored her freedom. A big dorky grin spread across her face...a very unusual thing.
Vannah stopped and leaned on one of the posts as she looked outside. For once, she wasn't watching her surroundings seeing who she could torment next. Gabby had gotten out before Vannah, which had left her in a slightly worse mood. It certainly didn't help the hate she had for the girl already.

Chase was heading toward the front of the school, toward the outdoors. He'd only been in to eat, but that was long enough; he'd had enough of walls during his stint in the hospital. Still, there was no connection in his mind when he spotted Vannah, grinning like a fool. The sight stopped him in his tracks. Had he ever seen anything other than a mocking smile or a frown on her face?
His last night in the hospital wing flashed through his mind like a dream. Curious, he headed toward Vannah, rather than away. "You look like the cat that's been in the cream," he observed, sidling up next to her. "It's a good look on you." Reminded him she was human.

Vannah's grin was gone in a flash and jumped around to see where the voice was that startled her. Chase, She thought. It's a good look for you. The words surprised her too. Was there ever a time when the two of them weren't arguing? "I was enjoying my freedom." Vannah didn't emphasize was as much as she had planned on at first....figuring she would see how long they could go without snapping each other's head off.

Chase gave a casual nod. "Freedom from what?" He'd asked the question before the obvious answer struck him; she'd been in the hospital. Maybe it was the look on her face, the near rapture at being so close to the outdoors that he'd recognized in himself; maybe he just remembered his recent conversation with Gabby. Either way, the knowledge shone in his eyes as a momentary swirl of crimson before curiosity returned. He only knew one side of the story. "How long were you in?" he asked, correcting his last question, since he'd managed the answer himself.

"Three weeks, two days, 16 hours." Vannah responded in a monotone. She had nothing better to do while she was in the Hospital Wing than count her time of imprisonment. She turned her head to the side so she was looking at Chase. "Not that I was counting or anything." She joked, smiling.

Chase grinned, laughter gleaming in his eyes. "I know how you feel," he said. "I didn't count either, but it was something like three weeks and five days." He took a mental picture of Vannah--smiling--and told himself he'd better remember it, because it wasn't likely to happen again. "You haven't been outside yet, have you?"

Vannah shook her head and sighed. "Nope. I just got out about three minutes ago...why?" She asked. The cool breeze that swept across her face felt nice....much better than the stale Hospital Wing Air that smelled of medicine.

Chase glanced toward the doors, judging their distance, then looked back at Vannah, his lips curving into a somewhat wolfish smile. "It's as good as you think it is," he said. After a month indoors, the blinding sun and moving air had been more attractive than any fantasy. The first time he'd gone out had been instantaneous climax and afterglow rolled into one. Chase's eyes gleamed with the thought as he inclined his head. "Are you up for it?"

Vannah passed Chase without saying a word as she headed for the huge doors leading outside. She turned and was walking backwards slowly waiting for him to catch up and raised an eyebrow. This should be fun, and it usually was messing with Chase's mind. She bore a mischievous grin.

Chase's eyes gleamed with flashes of scarlet as he turned to follow Vannah, his smile melting into a grin that was near predatory in nature. He didn't trust Vannah as far as he could throw her, but that did nothing to spoil the fun of anticipation. In a few long, loping strides, he'd caught up to her, and he watched her as they walked, trying to interpret the teasing look on her face even if he knew he'd just have to wait.

Once they were outside, Vannah stopped. She looked from the Forbidden Forest to the Lake to the Pitch to the entrance to Hogsmeade and the grassy areas in between. "Where to?" She asked. She wanted to go everywhere and couldn't decide. It had been ages since she had been outside let alone to anything those places.

Chase stopped beside her, surveying the land in one sweeping glance before turning his attention back to Vannah. "The lake," he said, without hesitation. It was the polar opposite of the hospital's cold stone walls. Endlessly open, alive with the play of the wind against the water's surface. "Let's go, then."
