Ryan. I took that long for Chase to connect the name to Vannah. He hadn't seen the Hufflepuff since before he'd gotten with Dru, the night Vannah and Ryan had gotten together. The thoughts flickered in his eyes, and he looked curiously at Gabby, wondering what she knew about the two. "Let's just say there's some history," he said vaguely.

"Oh I know, Ryan's told me" Gabby said quietly. She sighed and snak back into the water. "Anyway, I hope that's all in the past now, or he did and incredible stupid thing the other day" she said lightly as she began to swim again, keeping warm.

Chase's eyes followed Gabby for a moment before he followed suit and turned to swim, stretching his muscles. His leg was doing infinitely better, but his shoulder still bothered him. "What'd he do the other day?" Chase asked absently, taking the bait. Not that he really cared what Ryan had done, but it was conversation.

Gabby looked over her shoulder at Chase. "He proposed" she said simply, before turning back to carry on swimming. She pushed herself, trying out different strokes to see what made her scars hurt. She winced slightly as her scar burned and she stopped in the water, feeling it with her fingers to see if she was ok.

One brow rose over red-brown eyes as Chase watched Gabby. "Who did he propose to?" It wasn't a stupid question, if one considered how little Chase kept in touch with other people's drama. He had more than enough of his own to keep entertained. He saw Gabby wince, and swam closer, on the off chance she needed help. "Are you okay?" he asked.

"I'm fine, my scars are still fairly new and give me a bit of trouble now and then." Gabby thought about Chase's question and laughed. "He proposed to me, boy you must have your head in the clouds if you don't know we're engaged." she said teasing him.

Chase's eyes widened a bit. "But you're like, fourteen, aren't you?" His surprise melted into a grin. "You're pulling my leg," he said. Even Ryan couldn't be that stupid. Unless he'd gotten her pregnant, and maybe he could believe that one. He didn't have any tender feelings or kind thoughts for Ryan, admittedly based on a few meetings during Chase's first months at Hogwarts, but he considered himself a good judge of character.

Gabby shook her head smiling and grabbed her wand which she had strapped to her leg. She tapped her hand and muttered a short spell under her breath. Appearing on her finger was Ryan's ring. "That looks like an engagement ring to me" she said dryly, smilng as she watched the diamond sparkle. "Oh and I'm fifteen" she added helpfully as laughter danced in her eyes. She knew most people thought they were too young and stupid for what they were doing, but Gabby felt that Ryan was the one for her.

"That's not even legal, is it?" he asked. He looked at Gabby again, the expression on his face giving away his thoughts on marriage, and monogamy in general; it was not only overrated, but an all-around bad idea. His own miserable experience with the very mildest form of monogamy had been such a disaster he was turned off it for good, as far as he was concerned. "And no, I hadn't heard. I'm not really the gossiping type."

Gabby shrugged. "We're only engaged and not planning on getting married for years." Gabby said as she regretfully let her ring fade, she had attatched the spell to it so she felt like she always had it with her, but then it was safe whilst she was swimming or in class. "I can see you're not infatuated with the idea of marriage then." she said amused at his reaction.

"No," Chase answered, the word a little sharper than he'd meant it. He leveled his voice to speak matter-of-factly. "It just ruins anything that's already there, and you end up hating each other, living with it because it's easier than the mess of ending it. It's just another system people use to control each other." Maybe a little bitter, but he'd seen it all his life; his parents were a prime example. Of course, they knew how to put a polite face on all of it. He doubted anyone knew but him and the house-elf.

Gabby smiled slightly, "Such cynicism in one so young" she said sorrowfully. She quickly plaited her damp hair to keep it out the way and tapped the end of it with her wand to keep it together as she didn't have a hair band. "Sounds like you have first hand experience" Gabby mused, looking up at chase with interest. Her own thoughts on marriage were very different, based on her parents. She had grown up in a loving, supportive home.

"Enough," Chase admitted. "If watching my parents wasn't enough, dating just reaffirmed everything; it's not worth it." He and Dru had been fine before he'd gone monogamous. Then all the fun had gone, and it had been a constant battle between them. He wasn't going to do it again. "If you're smart, you'll tell him to keep his ring and just enjoy yourself."

Gabby shook her head, disagreeing with Chase. "I watched my parents, they have a wonderful relationship and I grew up happy. Except for James" Gabby said, her voice losing a little of it's happiness. Absently she lifted her hand to touch her oldest scar, the one she had borne since she was eight.

"Your parents were the exception, not the rule," Chase said. He knew he was dragging down what probably should have been a much more pleasant conversation for Gabby, so he swam off a little to work out some of the growing tension in his body. Talking about his parents always worked him up. Hell, thinking about them worked him up, it was why he kept his grades up. If they slipped, he was threatened with home schooling rather than boarding school.
