Gabby wound her way through the school, parchment letter in hand, ready to be delivered by one of the school owls. This was Gabby's first letter home since returning to school.
It contained the general cheerful chit chat that was all her parents needed to not be worried about their elder daughter. Gabby had also written a part to Kate in it. Nothing of the drama of the recent weeks was included in the letter, her parents couldn't do anything about it and there was no point worrying them.
Gabby coaxed an owl down and secured the letter. After sending it off, she found herself alone with only the silent owls for company. Recently she had been searching the castle to find anywhere she could be alone, and she had had many unsuccessful attempts. But here at last was some of the peace and quiet she had so desperately desired for the past few days. Recently, she had been feeling stifled, as if she could hardly breath or move without something bad happening to her. She seemed to be a magnet for bad luck and unrest at the minute. Gabby leaned her elbows on a cleanish window sill and gazed out, trying to lose herself in the beauty before her, and trying to imagine that she had been set free.

Derek had carefully made his way to the owlery. It was bad enough without the younger students trying to follow his every move, they acted like he was some sort of idol or something. He had snuck away during lunch and made his way up the winded staircase. He had plans to send an owl to his older sister to see how things were. She had graduated from Hogwarts three years ago and they had been very close siblings. Upon opening the door he saw some owls scatter up to their perches. He whistled softly for his owl which flew quickly to his arm. He glanced over and noticed he wasn't alone. "Sorry, I didn't know anyone was in here."

Gabby was startled when the guy spoke she had been so lost in her dreams. She spun round and didn't recognize them. "Oh, that's ok. Hi, I'm Gabrielle, Gabby for short, I'm sure i don't know you." Gabby always felt that there was someone new to meet. She gave the stranger a smile, wanting to seem friendly.

Derek returned the smile, finally someone he didn't know. "I'm Derek. Derek Calder. It's very nice to meet you Gabby." He said as he gave his attention to his owl. "Take this to Caria please." He wrapped the note to his owls leg and watched as it flew off. "Sorry my sister tends to get angry if I don't owl her once in a while to let her know what all is going on and such."

"My sister get's angry if i do send her an owl, we don't get on that well," Gabby joked. It wasn't that funny in her opinion but it was all she could manage at the moment. "Anyway, it's nice to meet you Derek, Derek Calder. I haven't met you before, what year and house are you in?" Gabby had to ask as she was so bad at guessing ages.

"Fourth year gryffindor," Gabby relied, not suprised that he had guessed fith year, she did look older than she was, which could be an advantage. Gabby was so tired because of all that had happened that her brain couldn't come up with something to say. Gabby just stood there, waiting to see if Derek would say anything else.

"Well my mistake milady." He said smiling at her giving her a small bow. "So you don't mind if I kind of hide up here for a bit now do you?" He asked curiously not wanting to invade in case she had wanted to be by herself. He really didn't want to go back down and find his fan club swarming for him.

"No no, not at all," Gabby replied, smiling at Derek. "Actually I was hiding from people up here as well, we can hide together," Gabby said, turning to look out the window, once again lost in her thoughts.
