"Here, give your dad a break," Keith said, offering his arms to Reprise after that look from Lyric. "I'm proud of you for talking. It'll get easier, I promise." He had the feeling she would never be very talkative, but that just made what she did say more special, right? At least this would hopefully result in some talking, just enough to remove the nearly-constant guessing game that was figuring out what she wanted.

Reprise wrapped herself contentedly around Keith. Here she felt comfortable laying her head against him. She looked over Keith's shoulder at her father, then finally began looking into the room. With the stranger gone, she was able to let herself look around. She saw shelves past the counter, heard the man moving about, and wondered if she'd have to talk again.
You'll have to say thank you at the end, her father had said. You'll have to say it so he can hear it.

Boxes preceded Donovan coming back to the front desk, the thin pieces settling on a bit of space free of papers and materials. "Now, don't frightened if a wand does something unexpected," he said, addressing the girl again. "Sometimes, they'll pop or bang, but that's normal; we'll just try another one." He gestured for the man holding the girl to step forward, then opened a box to reveal the first wand. "All you need to do is pick up the wand."

That seemed way too easy, and Reprise gave her father a questioning glance. She only had to pick them up? No more tests, no more talking? He misinterpreted that look and hovered his hand over his own wand a moment, but the result was the same. She felt reassured.
She shifted her weight, silently asking Keith to move closer, perhaps even to set her on the counter like he set her on his desk now and then. Then she looked between the boxes, considering.

As the man stepped forward, Donovan opened the most promising wands. "When you pick the right one, you'll know," he said. Even a little kid had to be able to tell when it was the right wand. "All of these can be used in either hand, so if you end up more comfortable with one or the other you can still use whichever you choose."

Nerves melted into a look of pure rapture when Reprise was close enough to touch the wands, but she hesitated. She wanted to be sitting cross-legged first, wanted to be sure that her guys were close. She wanted a moment to look at her choices. She'd had more choices since she came to live with her dad and Keith than she'd ever had in her life before, and though she'd been overwhelmed at first, she loved it.
Finally, she reached for the wand in the center box. She liked it best because it had swirls around the handle that reminded her of Guy's long, silky hair. Her eyes lit up as she closed her fingers around the over-sized thing, and a serene glow shone from the end. She took a deep breath. "Thank you!" She'd done it!

Donovan was surprised the girl had picked the correct wand so quickly, but that only made his smile brighter. "Well, that was easy enough, you're very welcome," he said, closing boxes and sending wands soaring back to their homes. It didn't feel like wasted time to have sought out the multiple options. Perhaps it was just a sign he was getting better at matching wands to customers.

Reprise hugged the wand close and didn't loosen her grip as Lyric caught her under the arms. When her feet were on the floor, she began a silent debate over whether she could get away with one little spell. The wand slipped out of her grasp in a heartbeat and into her father's waiting hand.
Nice try, his look said. She frowned mutinously as he turned to pay.
