"Then make him wait," Dare advised. "You deal with your parents for now, or just your dad since he was actually listening, and just keep telling Matthew how it goes. He wants to protect you, but if he sees there's nothing to protect you from he'll just have to suck Sickles." Dare knew the feeling of wanting to protect. He also knew how easily these people might be scared back into belligerence.

Rhys chuckled, though there was little actual humor in it. "Then it becomes an issue of who's more important and, honestly, Matthew's more important now." He wouldn't have said that a year or two ago, but now it felt obvious. He sighed heavily, and ran a hand through his hair. "But my dad didn't yell or freak out when I showed him a picture of me and Matthew. I don't know if you realize how big of a step in the right direction that is."

"It's not about who's more important," Dare said. "It's about giving you the time to decide for yourself if you can forgive them, because that's your decision, and Matthew's going to hold a grudge until he has solid proof that it's safe. It's about you, Rhys, not him." He shrugged. "Maybe you can get him to promise to keep his mouth shut unless he's saying something polite. F~ me if I'm wrong, but you didn't get with Matthew because he's the cautious type."

Rhys laughed, though at least part of it was from the stress of the visit with his parents. "Matthew is hot-tempered and immature," he said. It was something he'd known since meeting his fiance, more or less. Balancing Matthew and his family was going to be difficult, and he didn't know quite how he would manage. "He won't do anything I don't approve of if I say I don't approve of it." Of course, he was the same way. The battle between them determining what was okay and what wasn't was half the fun.

"You'll have to write a book to fill in the loopholes," Dare said. "Seriously though, talk to him. If he doesn't believe you, send him my way. I'll uh, skip the part where I set their teapot on fire. Don't want to give him any ideas or anything." He was surprised he'd done it, and even more surprised that things had seemed to get better afterward.

Rhys grinned. "I can't believe you caught the teapot on fire," he said. "I mean, I'm sure my mum about had a heart attack, but it was a great show of magic." He still had no idea of how things had gotten better and his father had grown more cooperative, but he wasn't about to complain.

"They needed something bigger, and I didn't want to get the Ministry on my arse. It was like the first thing I thought of, and I just did it." He smoothed down his robes. "I haven't tried a fire spell in a while. It's a good thing I didn't mess it up." He could put fires out, though.

Rhys didn't know if he could ever fully forgive his parents. The two had caused so much damage, but he still wanted to give them the chance to be a part of his life if they were willing to put in the effort. "Honestly, Dare, I had full faith in you, I really doubted you would take a bad step with them." Maybe it was giving Dare too much credit, but Rhys really did trust him.
