Another laugh bubbled up, and Skylar threw Michael a look as though to say that was completely ridiculous. He sent the elf off and brought out his wand to deal with the furniture the elf had crammed into the living room. "I never considered becoming much of anything," Skylar said. "Didn't think I'd live to see thirty, and if I did, I'd have been what my father was; f~ing waste of space aristocrat." Which didn't sound too bad, really.

"I always dreaded the thought of staying in Society for the rest of my life," Michael said. "I wasn't like the others, they loved it." Each in their own way, but he'd never seen any of them begging not to be forced to go to a ball. He'd never really been interested in his father's work.

"Eh, I could take it or leave it," Skylar said. "I miss the money, and I miss having really quality sh~. Maybe I miss the looks I got," he added with a grin. The Dark Mark hadn't been his first tattoo. "I never went to the really big stuff, though. Couldn't have sat still that long without screaming."

"It was horrible, having to go to a different function every other weekend," Michael said, shaking his head. "There were perks, of course, but I prefer having my freedom." Eros and Mano could still do just about anything they wanted, but it was impossible to deny the hold Society still held over them.

Maybe Skylar had started idealizing his memories of it all. Knowing that Ember wouldn't get to experience it had made him think of all the parts he missed, and none of the parts he was glad to be rid of. A lot of the girls had just been sitting ducks waiting for a guy to come ruin them. Of course, he couldn't imagine it was much different anywhere else.
"I took my freedom," Skylar said. "All the trouble I got in was worth it." He glanced back toward the dog in the hallway, watching his daughter sleep. He wouldn't give her up for what he'd had. He moved off to the side and started sending wardrobes to their respective places.

"Going out on those runs when I was a member, that was a big part of me getting what little freedom and control over things I had," Michael said. Generally, he had been the main attraction during those outings and, not only was it freedom and control, but he had been admired because of his skills, not because his father had money.

"I had sh~ to prove," Skylar said. He maneuvered the smaller wardrobe into the smaller room and the larger one into Ember's. "We weren't at the top of anything really, and dammit, I was going to be someone." Was. And look what he'd done with his life. He'd have gone in wand blazing if he didn't have a kid.

"I had stuff to prove, don't get me wrong. No one believed I was as good with a wand as I was until they saw it, and everyone thought I was going to run off with another Auror's daughter or something," Michael said. "It just wasn't at the top of my to-do list." He'd been too caught up in the action to worry about any proving he needed to do.

"I remember," Skylar said. He came back to get bed parts and sent them off to his room to be assembled later. "You're part of the reason I got so damned good with my own wand." He only gave Michael the briefest glance, then looked away. "You had everything, and respect I was never going to get. No one was trying to get me to join at fifteen, I had to wait, so I f~ing worked at it."

Michael's eyes darkened slightly. "I'd have traded places if I could have," he said. Whatever respect he'd had, it wasn't worth it. "I do have to say that I don't regret being so good with a wand, though. Some people are just horrible." At least he knew that if something bad ever happened he would be more than capable of fighting.

"You'd have been dragged in just the same in my family," Skylar pointed out. He hadn't missed just how much Michael looked down on everything. Maybe it was a byproduct of being one of Society's Elite. "I got really damned good about the time I hit seventeen," he went on. "Unforgivables first, and then everything else fell into place. A lot of people just don't have the motivation. What do you need offensive spells for sitting in a damned office? Why bother with defense when you've got people to protect you?"

Michael nodded, though he still hated the thought of people willingly letting their wand skills die. "Well, I intend to teach my sons how to use a wand well," he said. "Just because things aren't dangerous now doesn't mean they won't be in the future, there's always someone out there that could rise up." It wasn't a pleasant thought, but it was realistic.

Skylar gave that a nod of agreement. "Amen," he said. "Ember's going to be able to protect herself as soon as she can hold a wand. Right now she just hits things with it and throws it across the room." He still tried every once in a while, though. It was nice to know how damned sturdy his wand was.

"It's a nightmare with the twins, they'll jab each other with wands with they get their hands on them and when they can't, half the time things end up different colors," Michael said. He knew they couldn't control their magic, but sometimes it seemed like they were changing the curtains colors just to annoy him. "I like to think I had better control, but I definitely remember getting my father stuck to a chair once."

Skylar chuckled. "I've had my wand forever," he said. "I must've been four or five and my dad had waled on me for something... yeah, they were trying to cut my hair and I kept growing it back longer every time just to spite them. When I was busted enough to stop they took me out to see Gregorovitch himself and had a wand made for me. I was still a little piece of hell, but threatening to take it away worked for a long time."
